Abstract:
Prehistoric archaeologist and cultural anthropologist Marija Gimbutas was born exactly a century ago. Although she left us over a quarter of a century ago (she passed away in 1994), her person and her still controversial ideas continue to attract considerable interest, reflected both by the acclaim and the harsh critique that her work and theories have received and continue to receive. In light of recent archaeogenetic findings and their interpretation, the debate has even intensified over the past few years.

By transcending the boundaries of the science of archaeology, uncovering new conceptions of the world, providing answers to complex prehistoric questions, expanding our understanding of civilizations, and grasping the language of symbols, Marija Gimbutas opened the gates of eternity for the cultures of the Neolithic Bronze Age as a distinct whole of a world and its visions. By identifying “Old Europe” as an ideal era, Gimbutas introduced this cultural reality and thus shed light on an extraordinary period in prehistoric Europe. Vydūnas’ acquaintance with Marija Alseikaitė Gimbutas goes back to Alseikaitė’s childhood, years of studying at the gymnasium and university. Graduating from Kaunas Aušra Gymnasium, Alseikaitė chose a topic about Vydūnas’ idea of “individual self’. She wrote a work on the topic “The Elements of Folklore in Vydūnas’ Creation” at the university, under the supervision of Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, in 1939. The testimonies of M. This article is dedicated to Gimbutas’ approach to prehistoric amber and the results of her hypothesis for 21st-century archaeology. Amber is one of the constant threads in her research but hypotheses about amber have yet to be summarized. It is our aim to discuss the assessment of Gimbutas’ studies of amber in a non-exhaustive format, which can help to understand the focal points of her research, especially the chronological changes of amber utilisation from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age. In this article, the author focuses on the problem of interpretability of prehistoric symbolism as viewed by Marija Gimbutas, discussing the advantages and shortcomings of her interpretive method, as well as indicating the basic methodological presuppositions of the scholar that function as the most general guidelines adhered to by Gimbutas in the process of reconstructing Old European symbols. The problem of interpretability of the Old European symbology is tied to the question of the existence in Old Europe of a kind of proto-philosophy revealing the basic features of the worldview of the Ol

Research done in France on the body of sculpture created by Antanas Moneys (1921-1993) has shown that the full understanding of his work requires an engagement with its sacred dimension. The 2005 publication in French of Marija Gimbutas’ The Language of the Goddess' sheds important light on Moneys’ work. As far as is known, there is nothing to suggest that the sculptor and the archeologist knew each other personally. However, it is known that they were both friends of Algirdas Greimas.
