Abstract:
Coastal zones are biodiverse, with complex and dynamic interconnectivity between terrestrial and marine areas, and with multiple interactions between ecological and social systems. Despite on-going efforts to conserve and protect these ecosystems, destructive extraction and unsustainable resource utilization are persistent, posing challenges for governance. Issues and concerns in coastal zones are cross-sectoral and cross-boundary, often with overlapping jurisdictions. They are considered ‘wicked’ governance problems, requiring nuanced approaches to address, rather than technical quick fixes.

In this regard, a question arises how it is possible to delimit marine spaces where the jurisdiction of two or more coastal States overlaps. Abstract:
Coastal areas are typically densely populated, with high levels of social and economic activity, and distinct environmental challenges arising from climate change impacts, land degradation, and environmental pollution. Poor and remote coastal communities are particularly vulnerable to environmental change and variability due to livelihood dependencies on natural resources, which are easily disrupted or subject to losses from hydrometeorological hazards, and vulnerable to the impacts of marine pollution. Given the strong contextualisation of poverty and vulnerability dynamics, this rapid eviden

Abstract:
This rapid review explores socio-economic and political issues that may affect the effectiveness of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR). It specifically focuses on key socioeconomic and governance issues around marine protected areas (MPAs) and exclusive economic zones (EEZs) of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama based in the Eastern Tropical Pacific ocean. Research highlights the importance of understanding perceptions and context in environmental governance analyses and practice (Partelow, Jäger & Schlüter, 2021); and MPAs are increasingly recognised as being embedd

Abstract:
Aquaculture primary production is a globally significant sector involving 230 countries, with marine products one of the most traded commodities globally. While aquaculture is growing as an industry, capture fisheries’ contribution to the blue economy has remained fairly constant. There is a lack of reliable data on the true extent of illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing, due to its illicit nature and the range of evasive strategies employed by IUU vessels. Despite limitations to monitoring, control and surveillance, strong evidence suggests that IUU fishing has significant impact

Abstract:
The EuroSea project is improving the coordination of the European ocean observing and forecasting system to strengthen its capability of tacking the societal challenges related to ocean health, climate change, mitigation of ocean-related natural hazards, and the sustainable exploitation of marine ecosystem services in the Blue Economy. The scientific excellence of the project is based on its better integration, assimilation, coordination and governance of methods, practices, and instruments to collect fit-for-purpose ocean data and the development of innovative tools and solutions to manage so

The new EU strategy on adaptation to climate change highlights the urgency of adaptation measures while bringing forth adaptation as vitally important as a response to climate change as mitigation. In order to provide information on how adaptation to climate change has been promoted in Finland and what calls for attention next, we have compiled a comprehensive information package focusing on the following themes: adaptation policy, impacts of climate change including economic impacts, regional adaptation strategies, climate and flood risks in regions and sea areas, and the availability of scie
