Abstract:
This paper addresses the development of a modular hardware architecture for the design/construction/operation of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), based on systems engineering. The Vee model is first presented as a sequential process that emphasizes the validation processes with stakeholders and verification plans in the development and production stages of the ROV’s life cycle. The conceptual design process starts with the mapping of user requirements to engineering specifications, using the House of Quality (HoQ), a quality function deployment tool that allows executing a functional-division-based hardware design process that facilitates the integration of components and subsystems, as desired for modular architectures. Then, the functional division and hardware architectures are described, and their connection is made through the proposed system architecture that sets the foundation for the definition of a physical architecture, as it involves flows that connect abstract functions with a real context. Development and production stages are exemplified through the design, construction, and integration of some hardware components needed for the remotely operated vehicle Pionero500, and the operational stage briefly describes the first sea trials conducted for the ROV. Systems engineering has shown to be a very useful tool for the development of marine vehicles and marine engineering projects that require modular architectures.

But education about marine life and conservation areas that support biota protection in Riau province is still very least. Therefore, we need a public facility that is equipped with recreational, educational, and conservational needs. To actualize these public facilities, then will be designed an Oceanarium in Pekanbaru City. Oceanarium is a reservoir in a giant aquarium for the conservation of plants and marine biota that serves as a means of education, research, preservation, marine development, and exhibited as a means of recreation. The theme of the Oceanarium in Pekanbaru is Biomorphic Architecture. Biomorphic Architecture is part of architectural design that proposes all ideas taken from organic life, by form, system, or movement. Through the concept of Ocean Life Dynamics, the characteristics of building functions can be made as recreational facilities, conservation, and education about life under the sea.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

I will argue here that the recent trajectory of the field has been a harbinger of the political populism that generated the Trump administration in the US, Brexit in the UK, the Swiss People's Party, Marine Le Pen's Front National, Germany's Alternative für Deutschland, Syriza in Greece, Podemos in Spain, and other such inverse majority movements. What might be called an emerging architectural populism has led to a situation where our careful art is at risk of becoming its inverse: an architecture without architects. In response, I will argue that this is our moment – this is when we reclaim our field in the only way we can – this is when we create architecture.

Abstract The Ocean provides benefits of free cooling for cloud computing platforms. However, the use of the ocean for hosting cloud platforms needs to consider three challenges. The first challenge is identifying suitable underwater locations for siting underwater data centres. The second is designing a low-cost method for acquiring underwater data centres. The third is designing a mechanism ensuring that the use of the ocean for hosting data centres is scalable. This paper proposes the intelligent marine compute locator (IMCL) to identify suitable locations for siting underwater data centres. The proposed IMCL determines the specific heat capacity of different ocean locations at multiple epochs. In addition, the conversion of end-of-life vessels into artificial reefs that host open-source disaggregated hardware computing payload is proposed to reduce acquisition costs. The use of disaggregated architecture enables multiple cloud service providers to use limited ocean locations. The formulated metrics are the power usage effectiveness (PUE) and ocean space utilization (OSU). Simulations show that the use of disaggregated design architecture instead of non-disaggregated architecture (existing mechanism) enhances the PUE and OSU by 4.4 and 16.4% on average, respectively.

In this case, the preservation of marine biota is necessary. Besides that, Yogyakarta has a big potential to develop the maritime tourism especially in Parangtritis Beach. However, the location is susceptive with the external interferences like earthquake, windstorm, and tsunami. Therefore, it is necessary to build oceanarium which can protect the marine biota with three functions; recreation, education, and preservation. Furthermore, the design of oceanarium uses the resilient architecture approach that is adaptive towards the external interferences (earthquake, windstorm, and tsunami). The method which is used is descriptive qualitative with case study of resilient architecture literature, physical condition of site and government regulation. The application of resilient architecture is applied to five aspects of design; site (evacuation access, minimum height, and assembly point), form and mass (modification and circle application), building appereance (material that has durability), structural systems (construction system that withstands earthquake and tsunami). The analysis process produces an oceanarium design that accommodates marine biota and adaptive towards the external interferences (earthquake, windstorm, and tsunami).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

AbstractThis paper reports the implementation of a supervisory control framework and modular software architecture built around the lightweight communication and marshalling (LCM) publish/subscribe message passing system. In particular, we examine two diverse marine robotics applications using this modular system: (i) the development of an unmanned port security vehicle, a robotic surface platform to support first responders reacting to transportation security incidents in harbor environments, and (ii) the adaptation of a commercial off-the-shelf autonomous underwater vehicle (the Ocean-Server Iver2) for visual feature-based navigation. In both cases, the modular vehicle software infrastructures are based around the open-source LCM software library for low-latency, real-time message passing. To elucidate the real-world application of LCM in marine robotic systems, we present the software architecture of these two successful marine robotic applications and illustrate the capabilities and flexibilities of this approach to real-time marine robotics. We present benchmarking test results comparing the throughput of LCM with the Mission-Oriented Operating Suite, another robot software system popular in marine robotics. Experimental results demonstrate the capacity of the LCM framework to make large amounts of actionable information available to the operator and to allow for distributed supervisory control. We also provide a discussion of the qualitative tradeoffs involved in selecting software infrastructure for supervisory control.

The proposal carries out a component-oriented part-based control architecture structured in three parts: situation reasoning, re-planning trigger and hierarchical re-planning layer. Situation reasoning using the unstructured real-word information obtained by sorts of sensor detectes and recognizes uncertain event. According the event types and influence degree, the re-planning trigger decides the re-planning level. Hierarchical re-planning layer contains mission re-planning, task re-planning and behavior re-planning. Different re-planning level depends on the result of re-planning trigger. Preliminary versions of the architecture have been integrated and tested in a marine simulation environment.

Architectural concrete has been wildly used nowadays, and those served in an offshore environment often suffer from chloride penetration and carbonation. To assess the protection and decoration performances of architectural concrete, this study exposed architectural concrete to actual marine environments and accelerated carbonation conditions. The chloride and carbonation resistance of architectural concrete was determined to evaluate the protection performance, and the corresponding surface-color-consistency was adopted to characterize its decoration performance. The results show that the total and free chloride of concrete in the marine atmosphere zone and the tidal zone generally decreases with depth; chloride content arguments significantly with exposure time, with a chloride maximum peak near the surface. Moreover, the chloride diffusion coefficient is small throughout the measurements, indicating the superior chloride resistance of architectural concrete. Furthermore, architectural concrete also possesses excellent carbonation resistance based on the carbonation depth data obtained from the carbonation experiment. Therefore, architecture concrete served as protection covers can withstand both the chloride attack and carbonation tested in this paper. In addition, carbonation was found to have a profound influence on the aesthetics of architectural concrete. Therefore, carbonation should be carefully handled for better maintaining the aesthetic appearance of architectural concrete in long-term service.

In the last year, the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of Genoa University (now Department of Naval Architecture, Marine Technology and Electrical Engineering) collaborated to the design of the propulsion automation of two different naval vessels; within these projects the authors developed different ship propulsion simulators used to design and test the propulsion control schemes. In these time-domain simulators, each propulsion component is represented by a specific mathematical model, mainly based on algebraic and differential equations. One of the key aspects of the propulsion simulation is the engine dynamics. This problem in principle can be dealt with models based on thermodynamic principles, which are able to represent in detail the behaviour of many variables of interest (engine power and speed, air and gas pressures, temperatures, stresses, etc.). However, thermodynamic models are often characterized by a long computation-time and moreover their development usually requires the knowledge of specific engine information not always available. It is generally preferable to adopt simpler simulation models, for the development of which, very few kinds of information are necessary. In fact, for the rapid prototyping of control schemes, it is generally more important to model the whole plant (in a relatively coarse way) rather than the detailed model of some components. This paper deals with simple mathematical methods, able to represent the engine power or torque only, but they can be suitably applied to many types of marine engines in a straightforward way. The proposed simulation approaches derived from the authors’ experience, gained during their activity in the marine simulation field, and they are particularly suitable for a fast prototyping of the marine propulsion control systems. The validation process of these particular models, regarding a Diesel engine, a marine gas turbine and an electric motor, is illustrated based on the sea trials data and engine manufacturers’ data. Abstract:
The Yamama Formation belongs to the late Berriasian-Aptian succession, which was deposited during the Lower Cretaceous period within the main shallow marine depositional environment.&#x0D; Petrographic study and microfacies analysis enabled the recognition of six main microfacies for three association facies. These are the Semi-restricted, Shallow open marine and Shoal environments. The study succession represents deposition of three third order cycles, these cycles where deposited during successive episodes of relative sea level rises and still stand.&#x0D; The presence of shoal association facies (oolitic packstone microfaces) between the Sulaiy and Yamama formations refer to continue the deposition during the same stage, and may suggest the end of Sulaiy Formation was maximum flooding surface (mfs). The first stage started with occurrence of the shallow open marine association facies underlain by semi-restricted association and then shoal association facies.&#x0D; There are three cycles of this sequence consistently in the south of the study area, so that it continues to the lower part of the Ratawi Formation to be the upper contact of the Yamama Formation of a conformable and continuous in sedimentation&#x0D; To the north of the study area (near of Rf-1 and Hf-5 wells) the shoal association was only shown once at the bottom of the Yamama Formation and these cycles to became unclear. This suggest that the paleo-high was developed to the south of studied area, while the open sea was characterized the northern part.

Broad waters, harbor waters, and waterway waters make up more than 90% of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) navigation area, and each of them has its typical environmental characteristics. In this paper, a three-layer AUV motion planning architecture was designed to improve the planning logic of an AUV when completing complex underwater tasks. The AUV motion planning ability was trained by the improved deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) combined with the experience pool of classification. Compared with the traditional DDPG algorithm, the proposed algorithm is more efficient. Using the strategy obtained from the training and the motion planning architecture proposed in the paper, the tasks of AUVs searching in broad waters, crossing in waterway waters and patrolling in harbor waters were realized in the simulation experiment. The reliability of the planning system was verified in field tests.

Coral reefs are essential in marine ecosystem as they sustain a great part of marine life. The automatic classification of corals on submarine images is so much important in recent times. Hence, it can assist marine experts to classify endangered and susceptible coral reefs. But, classifying coral reef images is a promising task due to its varying color, texture, shape and morphology. The main objective of this work is to propose a novel operator called Local Inter Cross Weber Magnitude (LICWM) pattern. For classification, VGG–16 architecture is applied for extracting the features of coral reef images. VGG- 16 architecture has many layers for extracting deep features effectively. The traditional methods used K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Random Forest (RF) for classifying deep features. The performance of the proposed method is estimated using F-score. The Experimental results show that the proposed operator achieves better accuracy level and performance with EILAT and RSMAS data sets.

The architecture design of the system is introduced; a data overwrite algorithm based on the data secret level of the marine work is proposed; through data overwrite technology and the high-pressure circuit to achieve the safe destruction of data elements in marine environmental monitoring. The study shows the data destruction system can trigger data destruction procedures in real time, it can solve data security issues for marine environmental monitoring buoy in the out of control situation, and the destroyed data is unrecoverable, thus preventing data loss and leakage.

Drone-mounted, high-resolution light detection and ranging reveals the architectural details of an ancient settlement on the Gulf Coast of Florida without parallel in the Southeastern United States. The Raleigh Island shell-ring complex (8LV293) of ca. 900 to 1200 CE consists of at least 37 residential spaces enclosed by ridges of oyster shell up to 4 m tall. Test excavations in 10 of these residential spaces yielded abundant evidence for the production of beads from the shells of marine gastropods. Beads and other objects made from gulf coastal shell were integral to the political economies of second-millennium CE chiefdoms across eastern North America. At places as distant from the coast as the lower Midwest, marine gastropods were imported in raw form and converted into beads and other objects by craftspeople at the behest of chiefs. Bead making at Raleigh Island is exceptional not only for its level of production at the supply end of regional demand but also for being outside the purview of chiefly control. Here we introduce the newly discovered above-ground architecture of Raleigh Island and outline its analytical value for investigating the organization of shell bead production in the context of ancient political economies. The details of shell-ring architecture achieved with drone-mounted LiDAR make it possible to compare the bead making of persons distributed across residential spaces with unprecedented resolution.

Object detection is a fundamental computer vision task for many real-world applications. In the maritime environment, this task is challenging due to varying light, view distances, weather conditions, and sea waves. In addition, light reflection, camera motion and illumination changes may cause to false detections. To address this challenge, we present three fusion architectures to fuse two imaging modalities: visible and infrared. These architectures can provide complementary information from two modalities in different levels: pixel-level, feature-level, and decision-level. They employed deep learning for performing fusion and detection. We investigate the performance of the proposed architectures conducting a real marine image dataset, which is captured by color and infrared cameras on-board a vessel in the Finnish archipelago. The cameras are employed for developing autonomous ships, and collect data in a range of operation and climatic conditions. Experiments show that feature-level fusion architecture outperforms the state-of-the-art other fusion level architectures.
