Abstract:
Marine bioeroders, borers, and burrowers can have drastic effects to marine habitats and facilities. By physically altering the structure of marine habitats, these organisms may elicit ecosystem-level effects that cascade through the community. While borer damage is typically restricted to a few substratum types, burrowing isopods in the genus Sphaeroma attack a diversity of substrata in tropical and temperate systems. My dissertation examined how boring sphaeromatid isopods affect coastal habitats (saltmarshes, mangroves) and other estuarine substrata as well as marine structures. I used a co

Transportation accounts for a large proportion of global CO2 emissions, estimated at 22% of all anthropogenically produced CO2 in 2010, with most of this coming from the use of liquid transportation fuels. Second generation biofuels offer a sustainable opportunity to decarbonise this sector of global energy use. To realise the potential of second generation biofuels more efficient methods of deconstructing their lignocellulosic starting material must be developed. Jurassic marine ecosystems (ca. 201-145 million years ago) were dominated by three different lineages of reptiles - plesiosaurians, ichthyosaurs and thalattosuchian crocodylomorphs. Marine reptile ecosystems were often very diverse, and included animals from different lineages, of disparate body-size and inferred ecology living alo

These changes will substantially alter the hydrology of rivers and streams and change the conditions for riverine communities.
