Obtaining information regarding the resistivity structure of the subsurface from marine CSEM data involves complex processes. 1D and 2D forward and inverse modelling are currently the standard approaches used to produce geoelectrical models, with 3D inversion fast becoming a realizable method. The snail fauna (class Gastropoda) associated with the two kelp species Laminaria hyperborea and Saccorhiza polyschides was sampled during September and December 2009, and March 2011. Over 1000 gastropod individuals comprising 35 identied taxa were found in the 29 kelp individuals sampled in total. The attractiveness for settlement for gastropods of L. hyperborea was clearly higher than S. polyschides, which also had very little epigrowth compared to L. hyperborea. Relatively little is known about marine controlled-source electromagnetic surveys (MCSEM) used to detect hydrocarbon reservoirs. Typical MCSEM require the use of inversion to generate a model of the subsurface. We utilize a 3D finite-element forward model to simulate a MCSEM survey. With the results we were able to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each transmitter and receiver configuration that would best detect a shallow hydrocarbon target. Neurons connect to their remote targets via axons, which usually survive for the lifetime of an organism.
