Abstract:
On 15 April 1483, the young Venetian noble Marino Sanudo set out on a tour of the stato di terra, the Republic's mainland state, with his cousin Marco and two other Venetian patricians. Marco and his colleagues were travelling in an official capacity as auditori nuovi and syndics of the Venetian government, dispatched to hear appeals from the Republic's subjects, and to investigate the conduct of resident officials. Marino had no such responsibilities, but he left an account of his experiences in the work known as the Itinerario con i Sindaci di Terrferma.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article focuses on how, in a time of important political changes, narratives concerning Venice and its mainland state could be constructed and transformed. As case study, three geographical descriptions by the Venetian patrician Marin Sanudo (1466–1536) are analyzed: Itinerarium Marini Sanuti Leonardi filij patricij Veneti cum syndicis Terre Firme, De origine, situ et magistratibus urbis Venetae, and Descriptione de la patria de Friul. Several interwoven themes are treated: the ways Sanudo justified Venice’s rule over a large territory on the Italian mainland, his perception of the links between capital and mainland territory, and his view on the strength of these links. I show that the way Sanudo constructed an image of the Venetian state had its own internal dynamics. As shown in the chronological development present in Sanudo’s works, his representation of the Venetian state is partly a reaction to the political circumstances, but not a direct reflection of them.

Abstract:
The rise of local cartography at the end of the Middle Ages was shaped by the association of two ways of seeing and showing the world : painting and cartography. This association promoted the spreading of numerous new practices of spatial representation between the 14th century and the beginning of the 16th century at some local and regional scales rarely used before. Those practices attempted to reproduce the experience of sight. This kind of document is mostly often called « figures » or « portraits » by their authors. But archivists and scholars use another vocabulary according to formal criteria : sketches, plans, local maps, descriptions or views. The expression « vue figurée » (pictured view) used since the 16th century characterizes this documentation by stating the very nature of this kind of representation. The « vues figurées » do not belong to any geographical categorizations and were directly drawn by some agents of authorities to discuss territories or places. The thesis analyses juridical, social and cultural practices along with particular perceptions this kind of document refers to

Abstract:
This fascinating new book, Venice, Cita Excelentissima, contains a series of translated excerpts from the diaries of the Venetian patrician Marin Sanudo (1466-1536). Sanudo wrote his vast diaries between 1496 and 1533. As early as Sanudo's own lifetime, historians used the richness and variety of these diaries as an unparalleled evidentiary source for early modern Venice. The depth of the diaries derives from Sanudo's personal access to govern ment records and, perhaps even more, his attention to detail and the wide range of topics that he deemed worthy of record. The importance of the diaries prompted a group of Italian editors to publish them in their entirety between 1879 and 1903, a project that eventually spanned fifty-eight volumes. E

In recent years erosion has drastically changed the sandy beaches mainly as a consequence of the constant retreat of the P. oceanica meadows whose possible causes have been studied. Also in the Gulf of Baratti the methods adopted for the defense of the beach have been inadequate.

The rise in the beach level and limitation of coastal erosion, consequent deposition of suspended sand for natural nourishment, represents the principal economic benefit. Abstract:
Recent major seismic events such as Loma Prieta 1989, Kobe 1995, and Izmit 1999 earthquakes continue to demonstrate the damaging effects of liquefaction-induced loss of soil strength and associated damage to waterfront and port structures. This paper presents the experimental results from a series of dynamic centrifuge model tests performed to investigate the seismic behavior of rubble-mound moles resting on loose, clean, sandy marine deposits. Soil response during and after shaking was monitored by miniature accelerometers, pore pressure transducers, and vertical and horizontal displacement gages placed throughout the soil model. Currently, such test results offer a valuable alternative to actual full-scale dynamic response, which is virtually non-existent. It was found that catastrophic failures of even structurally-strong moles are possible if they are underlain by loose liquefiable soils. Densification and usage of a geogrid mat as liquefaction-induced hazards countermeasures are also evaluated. Both methods much improved the liquefaction induced deformations in the foundation and of the mole.

Abstract:
A water wash system has been developed to allow greater operating flexibility of marine gas turbine intake filters in dust/sand conditions. The water wash system provides protection against sand and dust ingestion previously obtainable only with heavy, expensive inertial separators. Routine filter maintenance is greatly simplified with the use of this system and leads to an average pressure drop reduction through the intake system. This reduction results in significant fuel savings. Furthermore, the introduction of a Propylene Glycol/sea water mixture through the water wash system has shown to be an effective alternative to conventional bleed air de-icing under ice/snow conditions.

Abstract:
The compressibility and triaxial response of mixed sediments, consisting of volcanic and marine calcareous fractions, are investigated for a series of samples taken in the nearshore shallow waters of Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii. The results suggest that the presence of coarse detrital calcareous sands dominates the overall behavior if present in sufficiently large quantities, resulting in low compressibilities similar to that of silica sands and friction angles larger than that for most terrigenous sands at comparable densities. Larger than expected frictional resistance is attributed to the volume change tendencies of the non-uniform grains. On the other hand, when significant fines are present, whether of a volcanic nature or consisting of silty carbonate residue, compressibility tends to increase and frictional strength tends to decrease.
