Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since his 1977 The Idol and Distance (L’idole et la distance), Jean-Luc Marion has almost continually drawn upon the work of the 5th-6th century Christian mystic Pseudo-Denys the Areopagite (Pseudo-Dionysius), not only within his explicitly theological considerations, but throughout his Cartesian and phenomenological work as well. The present essay maps out the influence of Denys upon Marion’s thinking, organizing Marion’s career into a three-part periodization, each of which corresponds to a distinct portion of the Dionysian corpus—in Marion’s work of the seventies the Celestial Hierarchy and the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy are foregrounded, in the eighties this emphasis is shifted to the The Divine Names, and in the nineties The Mystical Theology takes center stage. Insofar as these emphases directly correlate to the unique tasks that Marion has set himself in each of these various periods, Dionysius is revealed as a hermeneutical key, unlocking and clarifying crucial aspects of Marion’s theologically-inflected phenomenology.

Abstract:

Abstract:

For some contemporary thinkers, traditional and modern metaphysical systems were not considered as an adequate account, for they might have abolished the ontological difference. Such circumstances might have taken place because metaphysics was thought of as circumscribing by considering the whatness of any phenomena in form of, or oder of, the same, i.e. substance, essence or first cause. Jean-Luc Marion moves further and suggests phenomenological accounts that culminate in the givenness and the saturated phenomenon – ideas which open the possibilites to overcome the inadequacy of metaphysics. With the phenomenological third reduction, Marion shows that givenness already presents itself which is anterior to the dichotomy between essence and existence. This phenomenology of givenness enables phenomena to appear by itself in the saturated phenomena. In a paradoxical way, he shows that the constituting subject had already been constituted. Phenomenology, therefore, allows the subject to describe any phenomena in the form of, or order of, the other such as Marion proposed. Considering the contexts, this article may serve as an introduction to the notion of givenness and the saturated phenomenon.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Revelation is a key category for both phenomenology and hermeneutics. The first domain deals with the possibility of revelation, while the second through its interpretation seeks to understand the reality. Hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur is characterized by a focus on understanding the human ipseity (soi) and as such refers to phenomenology. Ricoeur is the author of the term 'hermeneutic phenomenology'. Initially, he emphasized the separation between the revelation of the sacrum and the verbal message of religious traditions. With time, however, he noticed that the religious word assumes the functions of numinosum, becoming a place of revelation. After all, Ricoeur remains on the content side of revelation, and therefore the phenomenology of Jean-Luc Marion, who treats revelation from a purely phenomenological point of view, is a valuable complement to this research. Revelation is the giving of the phenomenon as such, on its own initiative, starting from itself, independent from the subject, saturated phenomenon. From this two-voice of Ricoeur and Marion emerges a full picture of the philosophy of revelation, confirming at the same time the need for cooperation between phenomenology and hermeneutics
