Abstract:
Water cycle components over the Mediterranean for both a current run (1979–2007) and a future run (2075–2099) are studied with the Japan Meteorological Agency’s 20 km grid global climate model. Results are compared with another study using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 3 ensemble model (hereafter, the Mariotti model). Our results are surprisingly close to Mariotti’s. The projected mean annual change rates of precipitation ( P ) between the future and the current run for sea and land are −11 per cent and −10 per cent, respectively, which are not as high as Mariotti’s. Projected changes for evaporation ( E ) are +9.3 per cent and −3.6 per cent, compared with +7.2 per cent and −8.1 per cent in Mariotti’s study, respectively. However, no significant difference in the change in P – E over the sea body was found between these two studies. The increased E over the eastern Mediterranean was found to be higher than that in the western Mediterranean, but the P decrease was lower. The net moisture budget, P – E , shows that the eastern Mediterranean will become even drier than the western Mediterranean. The river model suggests decreasing water inflow to the Mediterranean of approximately 36 per cent (excluding the Nile).

Abstract:
Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness globally (Pascolini & Mariotti, 2012). Cataract surgery restores vision and is a cost-effective health intervention ranked second to the vaccination. In the ‘VISION 2020 -The Right to Sight’ initiative, cataract is given the highest priority so that member countries of the World Health Organization can eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020 (World Health Organization, 2007). From a public health perspective, the quantity and quality of cataract surgery is important. Hence, indicators to monitor cataract surgeries are both quantitative and qualitative. These indicators have changed along with the evolution of cataract services.

Due to its location in Gilimanuk Bay and its findings, Gilimanuk site stated for having fishers as subsistence strategy. This research uses pathological condition called enthesopathies as the primary data to induce fishing techniques as part of their daily activities. Identification enthesopathies follows procedure proposed by Hawkey & Merbs and Mariotti. Result shows only two specific techniques which can be identified through pathological condition. Those techniques are fishing with stick and spearing methods. Based on pathological conditions, early fisher’s community from Gilimanuk only developed shallow water fishing techniques. Absence of other fishing techniques indicates by artefacts and induced from enthesopathies might lead to early assumption about natural resources are widely available and easy to procure in surrounds environment.

Abstract:

This review is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Domenico Mariotti, who significantly contributed to establishing the Italian research community in Agricultural Genetics and carried out the first experiments of Agrobacterium-mediated plant genetic transformation and regeneration in Italy during the 1980s. Following his scientific interests as guiding principles, this review summarizes the recent advances obtained in plant biotechnology and fundamental research aiming to: (i) Exploit in vitro plant cell and tissue cultures to induce genetic variability and to produce useful metabolites; (ii) gain new insights into the biochemical function of Agrobacterium rhizogenes rol genes and their application to metabolite production, fruit tree transformation, and reverse genetics; (iii) improve genetic transformation in legume species, most of them recalcitrant to regeneration; (iv) untangle the potential of KNOTTED1-like homeobox (KNOX) transcription factors in plant morphogenesis as key regulators of hormonal homeostasis; and (v) elucidate the molecular mechanisms of the transition from juvenility to the adult phase in Prunus tree species.

Abstract:

False negative results observed in anti-thyroid peroxidase autoantibody determination by competitive radioimmunoassays using monoclonal antibodies. Eur J Endocrinol 1994;130:552–8. ISSN 0804–4643 Objective: Anti-thyroid peroxidase autoantibody (anti-TPO) and anti-thyroid microsomal antibody (anti-M) are strictly related, but discrepancies are sometimes observed. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence and to identify the causes of these discrepancies. Design and antibody measurements: Anti-M by passive hemagglutination and anti-TPO by two competitive monoclonal antibody-assisted radioimmunoassays (RIA-1 and RIA-2) were measured in 10 103 sera from 4232 subjects (663 male, 3569 female) screened for thyroid disease. Results: Anti-TPO and anti-M correlated quite well (r = 0.7 and p < 0.0001 by RIA-1; r = 0.74 and p < 0.0001 by RIA-2), with discrepancies mostly limited to sera with low antibody titers. After exclusion of the latter samples, anti-TPO were detected in only 79 (1.4%) out of 5317 anti-M negative sera, but were undetectable in a more consistent proportion (130/2880 = 4.5%) of sera from patients with autoimmune thyroid disease and positive anti-M. In 61 sera of the latter group, anti-TPO was measured by a non-competitive RIA (RIA-3). Forty-one (67.7%) were positive by RIA-3, suggesting the presence of anti-TPO not competing with the monoclonal antibodies of RIA-1 and RIA-2. The remaining 20 sera had undetectable anti-TPO also by RIA-3. Nineteen (95%) of these sera had positive anti-thyroglobulin (anti-Tg) autoantibody and preincubation with thyroglobulin inhibited the agglutination reaction of anti-M tests. Conclusion: Anti-TPO by competitive monoclonal antibody-assisted RIA is negative in a minority of sera of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease and positive anti-M. This could be accounted for by anti-Tg producing false positives in the anti-M assay and by a subset of anti-TPO not competing with the monoclonal antibodies in the RIA. When autoimmune thyroid disease is suspected on clinical grounds, a negative anti-TPO test with a competitive RIA should be confirmed always by a non-competitive assay. Stefano Mariotti. Abstract:

Abstract:
This article aims to show how the Nuclear disaster in Fukushima (3 March 2011) affected Japanese Language teaching and learning in Italy, focusing on the ITADICT Project (Marcella Mariotti, project leader, Clemente Beghi, research fellow and Alessandro Mantelli, programmer). The project intends to develop the first Japanese-Italian online database, involving more than 60 students of Japanese language interested in lexicographic research and online learning strategies and tools. A secondary undertaking of ITADICT is its Latin alphabet transliteration of Japanese words into Hepburn style. ITADICT is inspired by EDICT Japanese-English database developed by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group established in 2000 within the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University. The Japanese-Italian database is evolving within the Department of Asian and North African Studies at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the largest in the country and one of the main teaching centres of Japanese in Europe in terms of the number of students dedicated to it (1800) and number of Japanese language teaching hours (1002h at B.A. level, and 387h at M.A. level). In this paper we will describe how and why the project has been carried out and what the expectations are for its future development.

Abstract:

Raspé E, Costagliola S, Ruf J, Mariotti S, Dumont JE, Ludgate M. Identification of the thyroid Na+/I− cotransporter as a potential autoantigen in thyroid autoimmune disease. Eur J Endocrinol 1995;132: 399–405. ISSN 0804–4643 The thyroid gland is the target of several autoimmune diseases. Specific thyroid proteins have been identified as autoantigens associated with these diseases (e.g. thyroperoxidase, thyroglobulin and the thyrotrophin (TSH) receptor). In this paper, we report that the serum of a patient suffering from Hashimoto's thyroiditis, autoimmune gastritis and rheumatoid arthritis was able to inhibit the chronic TSH-induced I− uptake of dog thyrocytes in culture, even at a 1:1000-fold dilution, without affecting their 86Rb+ uptake. This blocking activity is rare as 147 sera (from patients positive for antibodies to the thyroid microsomes and the gastric parietal cell antigen, patients with Sjögren's syndrome, patients with a high titre of microsomal antibodies and low or negative for antibodies to thyroperoxidase, and patients with a high titre of microsomal antibodies and frank hypothyroidism) were negative when tested for their ability to inhibit I− uptake. Subsequently we tested 20 murine monoclonal antibodies previously obtained by immunizing mice with a crude human thyroid membrane preparation, which were all negative when tested against thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase. One of the monoclonal antibodies displayed a 50% inhibition of the chronic TSH-induced 125I− uptake of dog thyrocytes without affecting the 86Rb+ uptake of the cells. Immunoglobulins purified from the ascite fluid by affinity chromatography on a protein A cellulose column had the same characteristics. Taken together, the data suggest that thyroidal 125I− uptake can be inhibited by antibodies, that autoantibodies in the patient's serum are most probably responsible for the observed inhibition and therefore that the Na+/I− cotransporter is probably an autoantigen. Abstract:
e13068 Background: ARID1a (AT Rich Interactive Domain 1A) is part of the SWI/SNF complex, which regulates gene transcription. Its inactivation has been shown to determine resistance to endocrine therapy via enrichment of basal-like gene expression features [Xu G., 2020]. We recently reported that ARID1a lower gene expression might be associated with worse overall survival (OS) [Mariotti V., 2019]. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of ARID1a mutations on survival in metastatic breast cancer patients (pts). Methods: Breast cancer patients prospectively consented for inclusion in the ORIEN genomic database with known metastatic disease were analyzed using cBioPortal. Predicted biologic effect of mutations from RNASeq data was determined by OncoKB. OS was calculated from initial breast cancer diagnosis to death from any cause. OS analysis using Kaplan Meier and descriptive statistics were performed on SPSS. Results: We identified 644 pts with metastatic breast cancer. Of these, 88 (12.8%) pts harbored an ARID1a mutation. 62 (70.5%) mutations were missense (biologic effect unknown), the remaining 26 (29.5%) were oncogenic loss of function (OLF) changes (frame-shift, deletion, insertion, or nonsense). Median OS was significantly better in patients harboring missense mutations compared to OLF and wild type mutations [median OS 58.2 months (95% CI 44.5-71.8) with missense mutations vs 22.8 months (95% CI 10.8-34.7) with OLF mutations and 27.48 months (95% CI 24.5-30.3) with wild type]. Demographics, tumor features and chemotherapy use were generally equally distributed among the subgroups (table). Conclusions: In our study the median OS was worse in metastatic breast cancer pts harboring OFL ARID1a mutations compared to pts with wild type ARID1a or harboring missense ARID1a mutations. Further studies are warranted to assess how specific ARID1a mutations might affect survival in metastatic breast cancer pts. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
Has done research on different container and the syringe bulb to determine the number of moles of air. If the gas or air is introduced into the syringe or bulb then the more air is forced into it. The analysis uses Boyle-Mariotte law shows that the number of moles of air in the syringe with constant temperature and number of moles of air at constant volume is a sphere with eqqual 0.02 mol. Thus two different media (cylindrical and spherical), giving the same number of moles. Obtaining the number of moles show that the application of Boyle-Mariotte is derived from the ideal gas law is appropriate.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Wandering albatrosses ( Diomedea exulans ) nest on Southern Ocean islands, building elevated nests upon which they incubate eggs and raise chicks, and which the chicks occupy through winter. The nests support high invertebrate biomass, including larvae of the flightless moth Pringleophaga marioni . Here we argue that high biomass of P. marioni in the nests is not associated with nutrient loading as previously suspected, but that higher temperatures in the nests increase growth and feeding rate, and decrease deleterious repeated cold exposure, providing fitness advantages for P. marioni. Thus, wandering albatrosses may be serving as thermal engineers, modifying temperature and therefore enabling better resource use by P. marioni.

Abstract:
A wide variety of choice behavior inconsistent with preference maximization can be explained by Manzini and Mariotti's Rational Shortlist Methods. Choices are made by sequentially applying a pair of asymmetric binary relations (rationales) to eliminate inferior alternatives. Manzini and Mariotti's axiomatic treatment elegantly describes which behavior can be explained by this model. However, it leaves unanswered what can be inferred, from observed behavior, about the underlying rationales. Establishing this connection is fundamental not only for applied and empirical work but also for meaningful welfare analysis. Our results tightly characterize the surprisingly rich relationship between behavior and the underlying rationales. (JEL D11, D12, D83, M37)

Abstract:
In the present study four Granulina species we recognized from the Turkish coasts: G. marginata (Bivona, 1832), G. occulta (Monterosato, 1869), G. boucheti Gofas, 1992 and G. melitensis Smriglio, Mariottini & Rufini, 1998. The high variability of the shell morphology is studied and «morphologic affinities» are comparatively analized, and two different complex of species are here recognised: the G. marginata/G. boucheti complex and the G. occulta/G. melitensis complex. Meanwhile, with our records the number of the species known from the research area has been increased to four with the addtion of G. boucheti and G. melitensis. The name Granulina guttula La Perna, 1999 is restored, being considered as not preoccuped by Erato guttula Sowerby, 1832. Granulina gubbiolii Smriglio & Mariottini, 1999 is here recognised as a junior synonym of Granulina minusculina (Locard, 1897).

Abstract:
Acianthera pustulata and Lepanthes marioi are described and illustrated as new species. Both orchids belong to the Pleurothallidinae subtribe and were discovered in Southwestern Ecuador. Information concerning distribution, habitat, and phenology are provided for each species. Acianthera pustulata is compared with A. geminicaulina, from which it differs by its repent habit, pustulate sepals on abaxial surface, petals with a longitudinal callus, and a lip with a glenion. Meanwhile, L. marioi is very similar in form of their flowers with L. caudatisepala and differs from it by its greater habit, shorter and arching inflorescence, non apiculate petals with an elliptic callus along the mid-vein, and lip with a shortly oblong appendix, covered by a dense pubescens. Furthermore, Acianthera pustulata is also compared with two morphologically similar species, A. juxtaposita and A. lanceana; meanwhile L. marioi is compared with L. profusa, L. nanegalensis, L. repens, and L. rhombipetala.
