Abstract:
Matthew and Luke sometimes write versions of Marcan pericopae in which they make initial changes, only to lapse into the thought or wording of the original. Clear examples are Matt 14.1–12 ∥Mark 6.14–29 (Death of John); Matt 8.1–4 ∥ Mark 1.40–5 (Leper); Matt 12.46–50 ∥ Mark 3.31–5 (Mother and Brothers); Luke 8.4–15 ∥ Mark 4.1–20 (Sower); Luke 5.17–26 ∥ Mark 2.1–12 (Paralytic) and Luke 9.10–17 ∥ Mark 6.30–44 (Five Thousand), all of which make good sense on the theory of Marcan Priority. ‘Fatigue’ may also suggest a solution to the problem of double tradition material: Luke 9.1–6 (cf. Matt 10.5–15, Mission Charge) and Luke 19.11–27 ∥ Matt 25.14–30 (Talents) both make good sense on the theory of Luke’s use of Matthew.

AbstractContra Richard Bauckham's thesis that the Gospels of Mark, Luke and John were based upon original eyewitness testimony—in the case of Luke, the preface declaration; in the case of Mark, Peter's testimony; in the case of John, the testimony of Papias' John the Elder—I submit here evidence to the contrary, focusing my response on Luke and Mark With respect to Luke, I propose, drawing upon the works of Loveday Alexander and Joseph Tyson, that the Lukan preface is a second-century anti-Marcionite appendage to ‘original’ Luke. In the case of Mark, apart from any Petrine testimony, I argue that Mark created the passion narrative in large part from Davidic-saga and Josephan hypotexts.

Abstract:
According to the most widely accepted theory, Luke and Matthew used the gospel of Mark as the main source for their own gospels. In so doing, Matthew reproduced almost all the contents of Mark; Luke however omitted one large block of Marcan material: Mark 6.45–8.26. Luke may have omitted this section because his copy of the gospel of Mark was lacking this section, or because, although he knew this material, he chose to omit it from his gospel.

B. H. Streeter'sFour Gospelshas had a critical influence on the study of the Synoptic Problem. Unfortunately, this seminal work rests on two fundamental errors. When these are corrected, however, Streeter points to a fully satisfying solution to the Synoptic Problem: Mark wrote first, Luke used Mark and other sources and, at a later date, Matthew conflated Mark, Luke and other sources – including some also used by Luke.

Abstract:
Some scholars continue to argue on compositional grounds that the Two-Document Hypothesis is to be preferred to the view that Luke first copied Matthew and that Mark then copied Matthew and Luke. The best way to answer such claims is to take a test case and discuss the matter in detail. It will be argued that the evidence indicates that there are serious difficulties with the view that Matthew and Luke independently copied Mark, a view essential to the Two-Document Hypothesis. It will further be argued that the view that Luke knew Matthew and that Mark used both Matthew and Luke is, in comparison to the Two-Document Hypothesis, the hypothesis to be preferred on compositional grounds.

Abstract:
This book offers an improved version of Honoré’s triple link Synoptic model. Under the assumption of Markan priority it finds new evidence for dependence between Matthew and Luke in their use of Mark. It offers a new analysis of the fact that Luke and Matthew use Mark in different ways in different sets of passages, and it sifts out those passages where evidence of dependence is most concentrated. It also analyses patterns of agreement arising where a text other than Mark is considered to be the earliest. The concluding sections offer a more literary analysis of selected passages in which Luke and Matthew agree more closely in retaining (or not retaining) words in Mark, or agree in supplying words not in Mark.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this essay I shall consider ancient rhetoric as a means to suggest synoptic relationships. Focusing on the stylistic virtue of ornatus ("adornment"), I shall examine three triple tradition sentences in which the gospel of Mark employs a word used nowhere by the gospels of Luke or Matthew. Focusing on the relationship between Mark and the other gospels, I shall ask whether it is more likely that Mark adds the word to Matthew and/or Luke on the Two-Gospel Hypothesis, or whether Matthew and/or Luke delete it from Mark on the Two-Document Hypothesis. My study leads me to two conclusions. On grounds of ornatus, editing on either source hypothesis is plausible. But such editing on the Two-Document Hypothesis is more plausible, since Mark's addition of each word would entail the unlikely discovery of near-perfect or coincidentally co-ordinated literary patterns in Matthew and/or Luke.

Abstract:
In their recent survey of the synoptic problem E. P. Sanders and M. Davies argue that a complicated solution must be held to be the most likely, and conclude,Mark probably did sometimes conflate material which came separately to Matthew and Luke (so the Griesbach hypothesis), and Matthew probably did conflate material which came separately to Mark and Luke (the twosource hypothesis). Thus we think that Luke knew Matthew (so Goulder, the Griesbachians and others) and that both Luke and Matthew were the original authors of some of their sayings material (so especially Goulder). Following Boismard, we think it likely that one or more of the gospels existed in more than one edition, and that the gospels as we have them may have been dependent on more than one proto- or intermediate gospel.

Abstract:
The healing was an important issue in the first century is established first. The views of Mark, Luke and Paul in relation to the healing ministry of Jesus, and healing in the early church, are then compared. With respect to Jesus' healing, Mark's account shows his descriptive ability, and sharp eye for detail, as well as his theological views, while Luke is concerned primarily with theological aspects of Jesus' healing. There are important differences in their theological understanding of the source of Jesus' power to heal. The shape of the two gospels allows the conclusion that, for Mark, Jesus' healing is the obverse side of the crucifixion, with Mark's overall picture of a theologia crucis, while in Luke's gospel, Jesus' healing is depicted as showing primarily the glory of God, with Jesus as the powerful, obedient son, a picture which extends into the resurrection events. Healing in the early church is considered in the book of Acts and in Paul's undisputed letters. In Acts, Luke emphasises the power and evidential value in spreading the gospel of healing, often as the result of opposition. Paul emphasises the 'essence' of Jesus' ministry, his love and compassion, and healing, both by Paul and church members, is not stressed. The main reason for this is related to Paul's 'thorn in the flesh', since his physical weakness demonstrates that the truth of the gospel shines through because of the power of Christ, not by his own power; and he develops a theology of weakness. Although the later New Testament letters have few references to healing, yet the history of the church over the following centuries indicates that healing, and care for the sick, remained very important. The main findings of the thesis concern the different attitudes towards divine healing of Mark, Luke and Paul.

Abstract:
Our thesis unfolds through dialogue with N.T. Wright’s concept of ‘story’ and offers a critique of his methodology and specifically his exegesis of the ‘coming of the son of man’ saying in Mark 13 and parallels. In Part A, we explore with Wright the potential of the concept of ‘story’ to unify historical, theological, and literary enquiries with respect to biblical studies, and consequently refine the concept independently of Wright by drawing upon Jan Assmann’s idea of ‘mnemohistory’, the postfoundationalist theology and revised theological hermeneutic of Kevin J. Vanhoozer, and Michael Fishbane’s work in ‘inner-biblical exegesis’. In Part B, it is argued that the traditions that emerged concerning Jesus of Nazareth are deliberately intertwined with Israel’s ‘story’ so as to assert Jesus’ central role in bringing this narrative to a climax. Together with James Dunn, each Gospel is viewed as a unified performance of the received traditions, where each selectively draws from the sources available, both literary and oral, to provide a fresh improvisation of the tradition for its own context. Our exegesis of the eschatological discourse in each of the three Synoptic Gospels employs the tools of narrative criticism and a chastened redaction criticism to demonstrate the explicatory power that the hermeneutic of ‘story’ provides in reading what have been notoriously challenging passages for New Testament scholars. Our particular focus is to examine the nexus between the destruction of the temple and the ‘coming of the son of man’ saying in order to evaluate Wright’s conclusion that the ‘coming of the son of man’ expression must be read as a metaphor with the destruction of the temple as its referent. Our own findings agree with Wright that the expression is to be read as a metaphor, but, contrary to Wright’s conclusion, we determine that the referent is Jesus’ vindication at the eschaton.

John, Helen Catherine. "Bodies, spirits, and the living landscape : interpreting the Bible in Owamboland, Namibia." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/21589.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between Christianity and autochthonous (indigenous, pre-Christian) worldviews and practices amongst the Aandonga of Owamboland, Northern Namibia. Using participant contributions from a series of Contextual Bible Study (CBS) sessions (with groups of men, women, and children), and supplemented by ethnographic contextualisation, it challenges the oft-contended notion that Christian worldviews and practices have erased the significance of African Traditional Religion for Ndonga (or wider Owambo) communities. The enduring significance of autochthonous worldviews and practices is explored using responses to six biblical texts, each of which relates to at least one of three themes: bodies, spirits, and landscapes. The study examines feasting bodies (The Parable of the Wedding Banquet), bleeding bodies (The Haemorrhaging Woman), and possessed bodies (Legion). It considers possession spirits (Legion), natural spirits (the so-called ‘Nature Miracles’), and ancestor spirits (Resurrection appearances). Perspectives on landscapes are highlighted particularly in relation to aspects of the natural environment (the ‘Nature Miracles’) and the locations explored by an itinerant demoniac (Legion). Responses to the texts engender, inter alia, discussions of contemporary perspectives on diviner-healers (oonganga), witchcraft (uulodhi), the homestead (egumbo), burial grounds (omayendo, oompampa), spirits (iiluli, oompwidhuli), ancestors (aathithi), material agency (for example, apotropaic amulets), and the ‘traditional’ wedding (ohango). Having analysed the ways in which autochthonous worldviews informed participants’ interpretations of the particular texts considered (Matthew 22:1-14 & Luke 14:7-11; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:26-39; Mark 4:35-41 & 6:45-52; Luke 24), each set of interpretations is brought into conversation with professional biblical scholarship. The study therefore highlights the ways in which these grassroots, ‘contextual’ interpretations might nuance New Testament interpretations returned by the Academy, particularly by highlighting the highly contextual nature of the latter.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This volume is the edition and the commentary of about 300 documents discovered amongst the archives of mart kings (Syria, XVIIIe s. B. C. ). Written in Akkadian, an old-babylonian dialect, they give the opportunity of scrutinizing, besides kings wealth, many unsuspected aspects of diplomatic exchanges between major contemporaneous royal courts. They give access to an archaeological documentation which was lost due to the heavy looting of great middle-eastern centers in antiquity. Last of all, knowledge of masterpieces circulation allows a better understanding of artistic trends genesis in middle- east, at the begining of the iind millennium b. C. This research is not only a historical one. It includes extensive lexical studies, aiming to establish luxury vessels glossary : denominations of artefacts, constitutive parts of the objects, descriptions of ornaments, etc. It pretends to constitute a significant contribution to the dictionnaire de babylonien de Paris elaborated after publishing of mari documentation by the Parisian scholarly team who devotes his efforts to them

AbstractThis chapter responds to some objections and concerns. First, it discusses some Scriptural passages that might be adduced against the book’s thesis that God intends that sin occur: Habakkuk 1:13, Romans 3:7–8, Matthew 18:4–7; Luke 17:1–2; Mark 9:42, James 1:13–14. Then, it responds to some philosophical objections that have been adduced against the book’s thesis. It concludes with a discussion of whether the book’s thesis imperils the place occupied by the Doctrine of Double Effect in Christian teaching, concluding that it may still hold good on the human-to-human ethical plane.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter places Paul in the larger sociohistorical context of the early Christian movements, particularly the first generation of Christians. Some early Christians did not leave Paul unquestioned. They challenged him and his teaching. They disagreed with him and talked back to him. Luke challenged him. The longer ending of Mark pushed back against him. Luke grounds his objection against Paul in a pneumatological basis, while the longer ending of Mark has a Christological basis. Luke imagines the work of the Spirit as being to give the disciples the ability to speak in different languages. The longer ending of Mark places the promise of multilinguality in the mouth of Jesus.

Abstract:
In this paper, from the viewpoint of lubricant spreading, we investigate the effect of lube textures which mean a nonuniform distribution of bonding strength between lubricant molecules and the disk surface. Lube textures were formed by irradiating ultraviolet rays through a stripe-patterned mask onto a magnetic disk surface which was partially coated with one-monolayer film of perfluoropolyether. Surface characteristics of the lube textures were evaluated by surface energies ascertained from contact angle measurements. Spreading of the lubricant film was measured by scanning microellipsometry on the striped lube textures in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the stripes. The thickness-dependent diffusion coefficients extracted from the spreading profiles show that lubricant spreading in the regime of film thickness less than 0.2 nm is faster along the stripes, indicating the possibility of controlling the behavior of a lubricant film with lube textures.

Abstract:
Abstract Lube oil emission is thought to have a negative influence on hydrocarbon and particle emissions, autoignition and the life-cycle cost of internal combustion engines. Thus, one of the major goals of combustion engine research and development is to optimize lube oil consumption, for example by optimizing the tribological behavior of the piston group (interaction between piston rings and cylinder liner). This requires the application of a fast and accurate lube oil consumption measurement method. Methods such as gravimetric and volumetric measurement are outdated for R&D applications because of measurement time, absolute accuracy as well as repeatability, however some OEMs are still applying this method. At present, the use of tracer methods for measuring lube oil consumption is considered the most promising in terms of decreasing measurement time and increasing accuracy. For example, sulfur as a tracer is one of the most established methods for measuring lube oil consumption, but previous publications have revealed downsides and future challenges of its use. This publication, however, highlights the challenges of using the stable hydrogen isotope deuterium as a tracer which are still to overcome, in order to become a viable and reliable method for measuring lube oil consumption on internal combustion engines. In the introduction, a novel concept of measuring lube oil consumption with deuterated engine oil and the test bench setup are explained. Following laboratory experiments, test bench runs on a heavy-duty diesel engine and long-term studies on a field engine, three major challenges facing the new approach are identified and potential solutions are proposed. First, the long-term stability of the tracer in the lube oil and potential changes in the physical and chemical properties of the oil due to deuteration are discussed in light of the results of tests on a field engine that uses deuterated engine oil. Second, the hydrogen-deuterium exchange process to mark the oil with the tracer is examined and potential approaches for reducing cost and duration are highlighted. The universal applicability of the deuteration process to several base oil groups is also explained. Finally, the detection of deuterium in the gas of the engine exhaust and potential cross-sensitivities to trace gases as well as other crucial limitations of the detector in analyzing engine exhaust are addressed. The summary presents the requirements for converting the experiments with a deuterium tracer into a reliable method for lube oil consumption measurement providing crucial properties such as high accuracy, short measurement time, effort and ease of use.

Abstract:
