Abstract:
This paper seeks to dispel the notion that Mark Antony and the Senate indulged in a cat-and-mouse game over the control of Caesar's archives (his commentarii) in the weeks immediately following the Ides of March. At stake was whether unpublished documents drawn up by Caesar before his death should be ratified and put into force. The belief that the Senate and Antony contended over this issue and that Antony got the upper hand rests primarily on what I hope to show is a misinterpretation of two key passages in the Philippics. Moreover, since the standard interpretation of these two passages appears to be supported by Dio's account of how Antony cajoled the Senate into permitting him a freer hand to review and publish documents found in Caesar's archives, it will be necessary to have a closer look at Dio's probable sources for this particular section of his history.

Abstract:
The present paper aims to focus on how the circuit of different discourses in Alexandria and Rome contributes to the subject formation in Antony and Cleopatra. Identity, which acts as trap in this play, precipitates the characters from two different countries or contexts into a war through creating binarized categories with heterogeneous possibilities. Mark Antony – one of the Triumvirs of Rome in search for self-actualization strives against his country’s discourse in the beginning, he places himself in the warring discourses of Rome and Alexandria. When in Alexandria, he is inside the discourses of Rome, and when in Rome, he is inside the discourses of Alexandria. Like the nature of the signifier as it can happen and be determined by other contexts, Antony retains references to Rome when he is Alexandria, and establishes himself as a subject and makes his signification possible in this foreign country by relating himself to epicurean concepts other than his own former stoic attitudes. Thus, mark of the past element remains in him. Through discourse analysis, this study aims to analyze how the loop of self-hood is firmly tied by the signifiers, and how power, which is not solely negative and repressive, but positive and productive, shapes Antony’s capricious personality as he both challenges and is challenged by power. In the end it is revealed that Mark Anthony refashions his identity and perspective by admitting and embracing multiplicity between Rome’s stoicism and Alexandria’s Epicureanism.

Abstract:
In Julius Caesar Shakespeare reproduces one of the pivotal moments in European history. Brutus and Mark Antony, through the medium of their forum speeches, compete for the support of the people of Rome. In the play, as in history, Mark Antony wins this contest of language. Critics are generally agreed that Antony has the better speech, but also that Brutus’ speech is still exceptionally good. Traditionally the question of how Antony’s speech is superior is argued by examining differences between the two speeches, however, this approach has not resulted in any critical consensus. This paper takes the opening lines of the speeches as the only point of direct convergence between the content and the rhetorical forms used by Brutus and Antony and argues that Brutus’ opening tricolon is structurally inferior to Marc Antony’s. Analysis of the following rhetorical schemes in Brutus’ speech reveals further structural weaknesses. Shakespeare gives Brutus a speech rich in perceptually salient rhetorical schemes but introduces small, less salient, structural weaknesses into those schemes. The tightly structured linguistic patterns which make up the majority of Brutus’ speech give an impression of great rhetorical skill. This skilful impression obscures the minor faults or weaknesses that quietly and subtly reduce the overall power of the speech. By identifying the weaknesses in Brutus’ forms we add an extra element to the discussion of these speeches and at the same time display how subtly and effectively Shakespeare uses rhetorical forms to control audience response and appreciation.

A Greek inscription on stone found in Alexandria in the nine- teenth century and exhibited in the Alexandrian Greco-Roman Museum contains an unusual dedicatory text in honour of Mark Antony. The text was edited several times. It contains useful information which agrees with the passage of Plutarch on the lifestyle of Antony and Cleopatra, and their entourage. In this paper the author suggests the date 34–30 bc for the activity of the ‘Inimitables’ and adds a further commentary on the history of Antony and Cleopatra.

Abstract:
Rhetoric is a bodily art. “Character” itself is an emanation, or a translation of an individual’s physical nature: excessive, outlandish characters are used in ancient rhetoric as relevant examples of this connection. Starting from the controversial legacy of Mark Antony as an orator, this paper explores how medical theory underpins ancient rhetorical thought on the excessive orator and reveals the linkage of character, the body, and its environment. By reexamining the famous cases of Mark Antony, Cassius Severus, Maecenas, and Cicero himself in the light of Greek discourse on the effects of humoral imbalance on speech, I revisit the legacies of several heroes and villains of Roman oratory, as well as contemplate the enduring seduction of excess.

Abstract:
Abstract This article concentrates on the skills of making the political as well as the social speech of Mark Antony at the funeral of Julius Caesar. Antony was one of the Roman strong leaders who had a strong personality in his own right. Thus, he manifested his ability of oration as a noble man to persuade, then, to manage the madding crowd about the righteous of his political and social steps. Mark Antony had shown this ability by the use of certain persuasive strategies and techniques such as Repetition, Rhetorical questions, Alliteration, Irony, Metaphor, Hyperbole and Diction. However, his use of persuasion differ dramatically throughout his speech, i.e. the contrast between the beginning stage of his speech and its end, is much the same as the distinction between the base of a mountain and its summit. The elegance of this speech is that Antony achieve his goal and made people perceived him without turning out and communicating it. The results show that, he uses the same techniques as being more persuasive techniques than others such as Alliteration, Rhetorical Questions, Repetition, Irony, Metaphor, Hyperbole and Diction. It can be said that persuasion is a social and a political situation based.

Abstract:
As the tumultuous Triumviral decades of the Republic ended and the Augustan era began, the shadow of Rome's majesty continued to envelop the shores of Judaea some 2000km to the east. King Herod had survived the struggle for dominance between Octavian (Augustus after 27 B.C.) and his rivals, Mark Antony and his ally and wife Cleopatra VII, in part by not being at Actium in 31 B.C. where the final battle in Rome's long series of civil wars was fought. Although his fealty had been to Antony, he had managed to be east of his kingdom's borders conducting a military operation against Malichus I of Nabataea, who had been accused of disloyalty by Cleopatra and Herod (Joseph. AJ 15.110).

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the impact made on Mark Antony by Cicero'sFirst Philippic. Although the speech outwardly maintains a conciliatory attitude, it certainly upset Antony. Scholars have noted criticism of Antony in theFirst Philippic, both political and personal in character, which would not have pleased him. The following discussion argues that there are numerous associations with the stock figure of the ‘tyrant’ which would have been displeasing too. Such a vein of criticism in effect bridges the personal and political dimensions in potentially devastating fashion.TheFirst Philippicwas delivered in difficult circumstances. Brutus and Cassius sent a letter to Antony on 4 August 44 BCE and concluded with a stark warning:neque, quam diu uixerit Caesar, sed quam non diu regnarit, fac cogites(‘keep in mind not the length of Caesar's life but the short time he ruled [sc. as a tyrant]’, Cic.Fam.11.3). On 1 September, the senate met to consider a proposal which would have seen an extra day in honour of the deified Caesar added to all public thanksgivings (Cic.Phil.1.13, 2.110). Antony was angered by Cicero's failure to attend the meeting. He apparently left Rome later that day for Tibur. His consular colleague Dolabella summoned a meeting of the senate ‘for the next day, and this time Cicero attended. It was at the meeting of 2 September that Cicero delivered hisFirst Philippic. In comparison to later speeches in thePhilippicscorpus, theFirst Philippichas seemed to many a moderate and polite speech that concentrated upon Antony's political behaviour and left the door ajar for future cooperation. It certainly contrasts greatly with theSecond Philippic, which is well known for its bitter and sustained personal invective. Nonetheless, theFirst Philippicwas enough to make Antony angry and it is worth re-examining the reasons for this reaction. In particular, allusions inPhilippic1 to Antony as a tyrant and to death as the fate of tyrants, especially in the wake of Caesar's assassination, were probably interpreted by contemporaries as more sinister threats than they have generally been recognised to be by modern readers.

Abstract:
THE PURPOSE OF THIS THESIS CONSIST IN A STUDY OF THE ROMAN FOLLOWERS OF MARK ANTONY ; IT IS BASED ON A PROSOPOGRAPHICAL CATALOGUE OF 172 CITIZENS WHO SUPPORTED, FOLLOWED OR SERVED ANTONY DURING HIS POLITICAL LIFE. ANTONY'S PARTY BORN IN THE POLITICAL UPHEAVAL WHO SUCCEEDED TO THE MURDER OF CAESAR, IN MARCH 44 B. C. FIRST, FAMILY AND PARENTS, THEN, A PART OF THE CESARIAN ELITES FORMED THIS FACTION. THE DEFEAT OF MUTINA DIDN'T STOP ITS PROGRESS; ON THE CONTRARY, THE CONSTITUTION OF THE TRIUMVIRATE, AT THE END OF 43 B. C. , strengthHENENED ITS POSITION; HENCEFORWARD, ANTONY'S FRIENDS TOOK PART IN THE GOVERNEMENT OT THE STATE. AT THIS TIME, THE COMPOSITION OF THE PARTY SEEMED TO BE HOMOGENEOUS : ITS ELITES CAME FROM THE CESARIAN RANKS; THE CESARIAN LEADERS DURING THE CIVIL WARS JOINED ANTONY RATHER THAN HIS TWO COLLEAGUES. WE CAN NOTE, ALSO A GREAT NUMBER OF EX-CLODIANS. AFTER THE BATTLE OF PHILIPPI, THE COMPOSITION CHANGED : THE DEFEATED REPUBLICANS RALLIED ANTONY, THEN, AFTER NAULOCAE, THE POMPEIANS WERE WON OVER HIM. BEFORE THE PARTHIAN CAMPAIGN, THE TRIUMVIR WAS AT THE HEAD OF A GREAT AND PRESTIGIOUS PARTY WHERE DOMINATED THE NOBILES AND THE IMPERATORES, WHO PROVED THEIR VALUE IN THE ORIENTAL WARS. BUT, FROM 36B. C. , AND PARTICULARLY FROM THE CRISIS OF 32 B. C. , THE MILITARY SETBACKS AND THE OCTAVIAN'S PROPAGANDA HAD SPOILT THE UNITY OF A PARTY WHO BECAME MORE AND MORE HETEROGENEOUS. AFTER ACTIUM, THE FATE OF THE FOLLOWERS VARIED GREATLY. THE MAJOR PART OF THE LEADERS WAS PARDONED AND THEY BECAME THE SUPPORTERS OF THE PRINCIPATE. BUT, SOME OF THE PARTISANS, IN A GREATER PROPORTION THAN THE IMPERIAL HISTORIOGRAPHY ACKNOWLEDGED, DIED WITH ANTONY, IN 30B. C

Abstract:
The demolition the monolithic interpretation the engraving, which accompanies as Irontispiece Marc-Antoine Laugier's Essai sur l'Architecture, object the present work, aims to liberate the question about the origin architecture Irom the vicious circle created between the image the primitive hut and the myth the noble savage hidden within il. The engraving is without a doubt, the most prestigious image architectural history. Nevertheless, the study historical conditions lor its production, relutes the signilicance usually attributed to it: The image is not about the origins architecture, does not represent a primitive hut and its author is not Marc-Antoine Laugier. The image belongs to the ligurative repertoire draughtsman and engraver Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen and is not about a realistic representation a construction, but an allegory composed out the basic elements the religious theme Annunciation, pointing out to the importance the natural image lor a temple, whose lundamental composition is derived out the column as a metaphor lor Christ's body. This investigation's contribution lies in the exclusive study the accompanying Irontispiece to Laugier's work. The lirst edition the Essai sur l'Architecture 1753 did not include the image, which appeared only until the edition 1755. A comparative study between the two editions, the reconstruction the engraving's historical circumstances and the delinition the role each the actors who played a part in the making the books and the creation the image, makes way lor proposing a new interpretation such. Giving primacy to the physical medium the content a written document, vindicates the value a book not just lor what is said in it, but as a lormal element valuable in pointing out the historical processes lor its production, edition, commercialisation and diffusion, as well as clues about its possible readers and circulation in cultural mediums, all lorming essential inlormation lor developing the image's interpretation. Aiming the research thus, also made possible the linding unedited inlormation about Laugier, such as his will. On the other hand, the study the «Inventory after decease» bookseller Nicolas-Bonaventure Duchesne, served as the basis lor discarding the hypothesis the printing a second edition as a result the lirst edition's success and even points out the the commercial and editorial lailure the second edition, which contains the engraving. The precise identilication all the authors taking part in the conception and making the image, led to linding the original drawing by Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen. The comparison between the original drawing and the engraving signals key difieren ces which open up the horizon lor the interpretation new meanings.

Abstract:
Marc-Antoine Charpentier's setting of the Messe pour Monsieur Mauroy is the only composition in his oeuvre which was dedicated to a particular person. Each of Charpentier's twelve mass settings is unique; this mass setting is his longest at over 1,500 measures. Charpentier masses are diverse: one composition for women's voices, a mass for instruments only, a Christmas mass, as well as settings of the Requiem text. This document traces the history of the missa concertata up until the time of Charpentier. It examines the intricacies of Charpentier's compositional process: form, melody, harmony, and self-borrowing. This paper also analyzes recent findings as to the pronunciation of Latin in France during this time period. It also explores the correlations between the Mass and oration - the understanding and implementation of rhetoric. Musical examples from the Mass, period treatises, and phonetic transcriptions of French-Latin are a part of this document.

Abstract:
The recent discovery of a dome painted by Antonio Puglieschi in the Mondragone Carnesecchi palace, representing Mars and Venus surprised by Vulcan, offers the occasion to reflect on the symbols used by Francesco I de’ Medici and Bianca Cappello. According to an ancient rumor, the clandestine love encounters between Francesco and Bianca had taken place in that very same palace and the depiction of the mythological infidelity may alluded to that relationship. The paper analyses different sources which show that Francesco was often portrayed as Mars and Bianca as Venus: specific attention is given to the detailed description of their wedding celebrations which revolved around the theme of the meeting and love of Venus and Mars. It’s possible that the Del Vernaccia family, who owned the palace and commissioned the painting to Antonio Puglieschi, wanted to remember and somehow celebrate events that took place in those rooms more than a century before.

Abstract:
At the beginning of the 20th century, the French Antoine Meillet (1866–1936) and the Soviet Nikolaj Yakovlevich Marr (1864–1934) were probably the most prominent linguists in their respective “worlds”: Meillet, in Western Europe, as the chief of the Indo-European comparative linguistics, and, in the Soviet Union, Marr as the herald of the so-called Marxist Soviet linguistics. These two approaches generally considered antagonistic, but that did not prevent Marr and Meillet from maintaining contacts, corresponding with each other for many years and knowing about their respective research. First, this paper aims to present the contacts these two linguists had, focusing on the correspondence between Meillet and Marr. Secondly, the paper examines what Meillet thought about Marr and his theories, on the basis, in particular, of the numerous reviews that Meillet wrote about Marr’s works. Refs 11.

Abstract:
In the work of Antonio Bonet highlights his euphoric attitude about the utopia of the new architecture. Stripped of prejudice is facing one of the specific events of his time, will be the boom of mass tourism. Throughout his work, Bonet will face virgin territories. Since colonization of Punta Ballena in Uruguay in 1945, through the project spa town of Necochea-Quequén in 1952 in Argentina, the development project of the Manga del Mar Menor in 1961 in Murcia, Andalucía New in 1962 in Marbella and Aiguagelida in 1965 in Girona. Leisure became a problem to which modern urban planning should provide an answer. The return to nature and the outdoors, the sun, sea and sand, became the new habits of leisure.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of studies on the creation of a variety of lupine Antey, resistant to anthracnose intended for sod-podzolic sandy and sandy soils. The initial forms, which are distinguished by the average resistance to the disease, were selected in 2009 in the field in the absence of an anthracnosis infectious background in the hybrid nursery F1. The most stable combination of 1-08 turned out to be the most stable. In the period 2010–2012 the assessment and selection of the most resistant to anthracnosis of forms. In 2012, number 1-08-75 was allocated, which after a competitive variety test in 2019 was transferred to the state variety test, and in 2021 it was registered in the state register of protected breeding achievements as a variety of yellow Lupine Antey. The variety is universal, used as green food, silos, hay and grain. Over the years of research, the Antey variety formed from 45 to 52 t/ha of green mass, 1.5–2.0 t/ha of grain. The protein content in green mass and in grain compiled 42–44 and 18–19 %, alkaloids — 0.04 and 0.03 %. The length of the vegetation pies is 96–98 days, the mass of 1000 seeds is 100–120 g, the height of the herb is 70–80 cm, it is treated with good lateral branching (5–7 lateral branches, including 3–4 fruiting). The variety is resistant to fusariosis, anthracnose, especially to the formation of superficial and perforated necrotic ulcers on beans.

Macken, Jared. "The Stranger in the Architectural Project on the City." In Schools of Thought Conference. University of Oklahoma, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.15763/11244/335078.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the project “Two Strangers Meet in a Parking Lot” and associated research studios as a case study of decolonized architecture pedagogy. The project conceptualizes the stranger as an alternative architectural user, creating a dialectical conversation with the users and architectural visions from architectural history. This dialogue encourages new pedagogical research methodologies related to the topic of city design. The case study uses these methodologies to recuperate lost cultural histories of Tennessee Town, an overlooked neighborhood in Topeka, Kansas, with an important connection to the Harlem Renaissance. According to Kwame Anthony Appiah, strangers transgress and challenge cultural boundaries by creating conversations at the edges of these borders, yet strangers counterintuitively utilize the environments in the city that are initially foreign to them to produce alternative cultural knowledge. This interaction between stranger and entities in the city provides a model for how disciplines can communicate across their own boundaries. The strangers’ conversation, when transferred to the architectural studio setting, becomes what Mark Linder calls “transdisciplinary” discourse, which occurs at the borders of adjacent disciplines. The resulting knowledge intentionally highlights overlooked and misinterpreted cultural moments in the city while creating an alternative to traditional interdisciplinary modes of working, which the philosopher Homi Bhabha says is essential if disciplinary fields are to progress with the global city. The “Two Strangers” case study consists of built structures that were designed, first, to transform people into strangers and, then, to instigate conversations between them. As a result, strangers become acquaintances and exchange new knowledge. The architectural studio course explored this idea further by taking students outside of the classroom where they engaged with the community through conversations with city archivists, community leaders, city council persons, urban planners, and museum directors.

Abstract:
Abstract:
