Abstract:
In a characteristically bold assertion, the philosopher and composer Roger Scruton once claimed that ‘the lingering backward glance towards that which can never be recovered (and which is falsified in the very yearning for it) has been the greatest vice of English music in our century. Like every form of sentimentality, it involves a “turning away” from the present reality, a desire to lock emotions into a narrow and predetermined world of fantasy, a world which you yourself control’.

Abstract:
The case against Q depends logically on the plausibility of Luke's direct use of Matthew. Goodacre's carefully argued book contends (a) that none of the objections to the Mark-without-Q hypothesis is valid; (b) that given certain assumptions about Luke's aesthetic preferences, it is plausible that he systematically reordered the ‘Q’ material from Matthew; (c) that Luke's rearrangement of Matthew shows as much intelligence and purposefulness as Matthew's; and (d) that certain features of the ‘Q’ in Luke 3–7 betray the influence of Matthean redaction. Careful scrutiny of these arguments shows that (a) is only partially true; that Goodacre's assumptions about Lukan aesthetics (b) are open to serious objection; and that while (c) is true, Goodacre's argument in (d) ultimately cuts against his case against Q.

Abstract:
An account of consonantal ‘twinning’ in English and other languages.THIS ESSAY concerns itself with gemination in English, but more specifically, it asks whether English has consonantal gemination (CG), as has been reported by some in the literature. Gemination is usually defined as a phonetic doubling (cf. Latin geminus ‘twin’); however, phonetic length (as opposed to a single or nongeminated segment) is a more accurate designation (see Matthews 1997:141, who cites Italian atto [at[Length mark]o] ‘act’, making reference only to ‘doubling’). It has long been known that English does not have contrastive CG as is recognized, say, from the phonemic difference between Classical and Modern Standard Arabic kasara (‘he broke’) and kassara (‘he smashed’) or darasa (‘he studied’) and darrasa (‘he taught’).

Abstract:
This article challenges Mark Goodacre's contention that the distribution of editorial fatigue in Matthew and Luke points not only to Markan priority but also to Luke's dependence on Matthew. Goodacre's argument is criticised through questioning the assumptions that Matthew's handling of Q would have been analogous to his handling of Mark and to Luke's handling of Q, as well as the claim that no instances of editorial fatigue can be detected in Matthew's handling of the double tradition. The conclusion is that the argument from editorial fatigue cannot be used to establish that the existence of Q is improbable.

Edwards, John C. "The reception of the ransom logion and its significance for the study of Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3116.

Full text
Abstract:
The ransom logion, as presented in Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28, is the only place in the synoptic gospels outside the Eucharist where Jesus gives a beneficial interpretation of his upcoming death. This fact has generated much discussion about the authenticity and scriptural background of the ransom logion as found in Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28. However, no one has examined the early reception of the ransom logion, nor has anyone explored the significance of that reception for the critical study of Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28. The purpose of this study is to fill these lacunae in the literature. First, this study examines the reception of the ransom logion from the New Testament through the third century. Preceding this examination is a methodology for surveying traditions that stretch across the New Testament and into the Early Christian periods. Second, this study explores the potential significance of the reception of the ransom logion for the critical study of Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28. The rationale for this exploration relies on the fact that there are observable patterns displayed in the reception of the ransom logion, which may reflect how the ransom logion functions in Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28. Specifically, the study explores the significance of these patterns as they relate to the origin of the ransom logion in a Eucharistic setting, a pre-existent coming in Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28, and the scriptural background of Mark 10.45/Matthew 20.28.

Abstract:
Matthew’s Gospel builds on the portrait of Jesus and sin found in Mark, but adds a birth story to make it clear that Jesus will save his people from their sins. Matthew thus invokes the significance of Jesus’ death already in the birth story. Although Joseph seeks to divorce Mary because she is scandalously pregnant with Jesus before they are married, Matthew goes out of his way to assure the reader that God has worked in similar fashion before with other women heroes of the faith: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, the wife of Uriah (Bathsheba) each of whom gave birth in seemingly scandalous circumstances. But like these women, Mary is righteous in the eyes of God and she faithfully bears Jesus regardless of outward appearances. This motif of righteousness continues in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), where we find a Jesus who stresses the moral disposition of one’s heart rather than mere outward observance of the Jewish law. Sin originates from within. Like Mark, Matthew’s Jesus will die a sacrificial death for the forgiveness of sins.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at Q and Matthew. The so-called Q source or Saying Source preserved in Luke and Matthew—and usually cited from Luke—has little to say about the Temple. Owing to its importance as an early document and its influence on both Matthew and Luke, clarity concerning Q's attitude toward the Temple is crucial for understanding pre-70 early Christian approaches to the Temple as a whole. Meanwhile, Matthew's attitude toward the Temple is argued among scholars. Some believe that the Temple is rejected and replaced by Jesus because, as in Mark, it is a place of conflict with the Jewish authorities. Others contend that Matthew's portrayal is consistently positive and that he accepts the legitimacy of the Temple. Despite his criticism of the Jewish leaders who run it, for Matthew, the Temple remains an appropriate setting for Jesus's teachings.

Abstract:
Suzanne Nalbantian provides an overarching synthesis of the conclusions about creativity arrived at by the neuroscientific and humanist contributors to this volume. She shows that the neuroscience chapters present a span of approaches, including a “workspace model” of the creative brain (Jean-Pierre Changeux), the role of the default mode network (Marcus Raichle), cognitive processing during dreaming (Robert Stickgold), the fundamental systems and cellular foundations of creativity (Jaak Panksepp, Alcino Silva, and John Bickle), and the importance of brain circuit plasticity in quantitative creative cognition (Geraint Wiggins and Charlotte Stagg). The psychologists Robert Sternberg, Oshin Vartanian, and Liane Gabora offer cognitive approaches based on phenomena of mind. Nancy Andreasen and Paul Matthews show how studies of exceptional brains—those marked by genius or those altered by disease or drugs—illuminate the mechanisms of creativity. The humanist contributors to this book provide a range of perspectives from those who analyze creativity as a trait of the individual (Suzanne Nalbantian, Suzette Henke, Mark Hussey, and John Onians) and those who view it as shaped by social context (Peter Schneck, Donald Wehrs, and John Foster). Personal narratives of the creative process are provided by the musician Bruce Adolphe and the contemporary novelist Richard Powers. All the contributors explore aspects of the conscious processing and spontaneous, nonconsious processing that define creativity, which this volume investigates through a unique, interdisciplinary optic.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 traces instances where the Synoptic authors self-consciously draw attention to their tradition’s status as written in bids for authority, often in reference to prior Gospels that they consider inferior. An initial section introduces the terms “textual self-consciousness” and “competitive textualization.” Following this section, the chapter addresses moments in each of the Synoptic Gospels where the author or authors draw attention to their status as written tradition. For Mark, the chapter highlights Mark 13:14, though it also shows how Mark is aware of Jewish Scriptures and positions himself with reference to them. For Matthew, the chapter makes an original scholarly contribution by focusing upon Matthew 1:1’s reference to the Gospel as a biblos (“book”), which shows that what Mark considered a “gospel” Matthew considered a “book.” For Luke, the chapter focuses upon the Lukan prologue of Luke 1:1–4, and specifically Luke’s awareness that he is entering a market for Jesus books by writing his Gospel.

Full text
Abstract:
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are well assessed aftertreatment devices, equipping almost every modern diesel engine on the market to comply with today’s stringent emission standards. However, an accurate estimation of soot loading, which is instrumental to ensuring optimal performance of the whole engine-after-treatment assembly is still a major challenge. In fact, several highly coupled physical-chemical phenomena occur at the same time, and a vast number of engine and exhaust dependent parameters make this task even more daunting. This challenge may be solved with models characterized by different degrees of detail (0-D to 3-D) depending on the specific application. However, the use of real-time, but accurate enough models, may be of primary importance to face with advanced control challenges, such as the integration of the DPF with the engine or other critical aftertreatment components (Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or other NOx control components), or to properly develop model-based OBD sensors. This paper aims at addressing real time DPF modeling issues with special regard to key parameter settings, by using the 1D code ExhAUST (Exhaust Aftertreatment Unified Simulation Tool), developed jointly by the University of Rome Tor Vergata and West Virginia University. ExhAUST is characterized by a novel and unique full analytical treatment of the wall that allows faithful representation with high degree of detail the evolution of soot loading inside the porous matrix. Numerical results are compared with experimental data gathered at West Virginia University (WVU) engine laboratory using a Mack heavy-duty diesel engine coupled to a Johnson Matthey CCRT (DOC, Diesel Oxidation Catalyst+CDPF, Catalyzed DPF) aftertreatment system. To that aim, the engine test bench has been equipped with a DPF weighing setup to track soot load over a specifically developed engine operating procedure. Obtained results indicate that the model is accurate enough to capture soot loading and back pressure histories with regard to different steady state engine operating points, without needing any tuning procedure of the key parameters. Thus, the use of ExhAUST for application to advanced after-treatment control appears promising at this stage.
