Abstract:
This introductory chapter sets out the book's purpose, namely to provide a systematic analysis of Turkey's media system, its reconfiguration under domestic and international dynamics, the political and cultural tensions it harbors, and the trajectories it shares with other media systems around the world. The book highlights the push-pull forces of a centralized state authority and its democratization demands, the interpenetration of state and capital, and the overlapping of patronage structures with market imperatives. The remainder of the chapter discusses Turkey's media industry, its political system, and its authoritarian neoliberal order. These are followed by descriptions of the scope of the present study, the theoretical framework and methods, and an overview of the subsequent chapters.

Abstract:
This chapter explores one of the ironies that color the history of the American film industry—the fact that its most glorious years, in terms of profitability, were those during which the entire nation struggled desperately to pull itself out of the depths of the Great Depression. Hollywood was as hard hit as any other industry by the stock market crash of 1929. But the captains of the film industry took advantage of several of the “New Deal” offers extended in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Owing in part to smart business practices and in large part to an audience desperately in need of inexpensive escapist entertainment, the American film industry after 1933 thrived on a circle of economic dependence on attendance, exhibition, and production; only after World War II did the circle reverse itself and turn vicious.

Moullan, Yasser. What Fundamentals Drive the Immigration of Medical Doctors? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815273.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
In a globalized world, the competition to attract high-skilled people from all over the world has become intense. In this context, medical doctors are one of the most targeted occupations because the need for healthcare is continuously growing. This chapter assesses the determinants of international immigration of medical doctors by focusing on the major OECD receiving countries yearly from 1991 to 2004. We use a traditional push–pull model to analyse the attractiveness of the healthcare market of receiving countries by disentangling the demand and the supply side. Our results conclude that the inflows of foreign-trained doctors is higher in OECD countries with low density of doctors (supply) and with high social expenditures in health (demand). These results suggest that the mobility of medical doctors responds to the strategy of OECD countries to fill the gap between their supply of health services and their population’s healthcare needs.

Alter, Karen J., and Laurence R. Helfer. The Authority of the Andean Tribunal of Justice in a Time of Regional Political Crisis. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199680788.003.0007.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the geopolitical factors now threatening the Andean Community and explains how the Andean Tribunal of Justice (ATJ) has responded to this crisis. It also explains why the ATJ's intellectual property (IP) island continues to thrive even as threats to the larger integration project loom larger. It then returns to the Ecuador noncompliance dispute, introduced in Chapter 6, and considers how developments in the Andean integration process may affect the influence and power of the ATJ going forward. Divisions in the Andean Community, together with the pull of competing regional projects such as Mercosur and UNASUR — a merger of the Andean Community and Mercosur — have impeded the longstanding goal of creating an Andean common market and led to significantly reduced government support for the Andean integration project as a whole. This chapter thus attempts to understand what happened to the ATJ's authority during this crisis.

Djurfeldt, Agnes Andersson, Göran Djurfeldt, Ola Hall, and Maria Archila Bustos. Agrarian Change and Structural Transformation: Drivers and Distributional Outcomes. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198799283.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines agrarian changes triggered by the structural transformation of the overall economy, focusing on their drivers and distributional outcomes. By means of multi-level modelling of three processes—intensification of grain yields, diversification of cropping, and non-farm diversification (pluriactivity)—it concludes that intensification has moderately accelerated and is getting more important than its twin process. Similarly, crop diversification has accelerated, while non-farm diversification seems to be more pull- than push-driven. The most important drivers of the two first-mentioned processes are commercial ones: increasing local and domestic demand for grains and for other crops and institutional changes promoting market participation of smallholders. The chapter concludes that these processes are not pro-poor, but neither are they pro-rich; middling smallholder households tend to be more involved. The gender profile of agricultural diversification seems to involve and benefit male-managed farms, whereas non-farm diversification is gender neutral.

Mehta, Rini Battacharya. Unruly Cinema. University of Illinois Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5622/illinois/9780252043123.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Unruly Cinema is a meta-history of Indian cinema’s emergence and growth in correspondence with the colonial, postcolonial, and the neoliberal state. Indian popular cinema has grown steadily from the largest national film industry to a global cultural force. Between 1931 and 2000, Indian cinema overcame Hollywood’s domination of the Indian market, crafted a postcolonial national aesthetic, resisted the high modernist pull of art cinema, and eventually emerged as a seamless extension of India’s neoliberal ambitions. The major agent of these four shifts was a section of the Hindi cinema produced in Bombay, which came to be named and marketed as Bollywood in the twenty-first century. Through a systematic exposition of four historical periods, this book shows how Bollywood’s current dominance is an unlikely result of unruliness, that is, of a disorganized defiance of norms. Perpetually caught between an apathetic and adversarial government and an undefined public, Indian commercial cinema has thrived simply by defying control or normalization. The aesthetic turns of this cinema are guided by counter-effects, often unintended and always unruly.
