The Brazilian shoes industry is part of a scenario where most of the companies from this industry still has its strategies based on the (uncertainty of) success of new products, since it is a sector closely related to fashion, implying on constant changes in collections. However, it seems that some companies try to develop strategies aiming to achieve greater continuity while imposing greater difficulty for being followed by competitors – such as those related to distribution channels. The distribution intensity is a key element in the channel strategies, since it determines the extent to which these companies reach and serve their target markets. Therefore, based on the theoretical models existing in literature on distribution channels, we seek to investigate – through a case study at Grendene SA – what are the factors that influenced the distribution intensity. The study aims to analyze the diversification levels of marketing channels, as well as the strategies and factors that have impacted on the intensity of distribution. Moreover, it analyses what kind of conflicts that are found in the channel, as well as its implications. To that end, an exploratory research was developed based on primary data collection through semi-structured in depth interviews and through a complementary round of participant observation. The results show that different strategies were implemented by the company in order to enhance its products distribution. It also highlights how this process takes place – to the extent that the company is present in several channels, but not necessarily through its own team of representatives. Regarding the factors that influenced the distribution intensity, the analysis points to six elements: competition, brand, product, structure, culture and company size. Finally, the channel conflicts were identified, as well as its implications.

Researchers have been interested in understanding the relationship between global diversification and firm performance for a long run. Based on the arguments of smiling curve, this paper incorporates innovation and marketing activities into the global diversifi-cation-performance relationship. The empirical results show an insignificant impact of global diversification on performance in the baseline model and a negative impact in the modified model. This finding implies that there is invisible costs of global diversification. However, both the innovation and marketing activities have moderating effects on the global diversification-performance relationship. Our findings are similar to the arguments of smiling curve that innovation and marketing activities indeed assist in enhancing firm performance. Additionally, our findings also imply that firms should give higher priority to innovative technology and lower priority to marketing activities.

With the rise of consumer awareness, consumers buy a house when in addition to lots of care, public facilities, room layout and the related costs, the construction companies more and more attention to meet consumers' requirements and whether to provide additional good service. This means that construction companies must provide better quality of service to enhance customer satisfaction. With the increase of the population of the aged and the realization of the government’s new retirement system for workers, the era in which the aged are the main customers has declared its coming. The industries orienting their markets to the aged will be able to flourish, and the institutions for elderly healthcare and long-term placement will hence increase. On the other hand, owing to the decrease of the newborn, the trend of less children, the deficiency of labor, the aging of the people and the overload of supporting the aged, whether the youth can support their old parents economically or not will become a potential problem in the future. The industries orienting their markets to the aged will thus have pressure and predicament. Therefore, the investment on the industries should be seriously analyzed and evaluated to find the pattern suitable for forever running. Evaluating the possibilities of the market and researching on new management patterns and strategies, this study aims to help establish new management patterns for elderly healthcare to suit the aged’s need in the future and make the managers become more competitive. “Literature search approach” is applied in this study to build a “virtual ideal retirement center with diversification management strategy”; and “modified in-depch interview approach”, to evaluate the possibility of the market. “The diversification management strategy for elderly healthcare” designed in this study is based on health management, sustaintable education and innovative recreation. Different from the single-patterned management in the past, its main points include a town heading for dignity and value, further studying for the retired to develop their potential and ability, residence exchange and short trip to every part of the world to enrich the retired’s international view through the management policy like “club med,” increasing the outdoor recreation places to provide the youth places to refresh and the aged working opportunities to get their healthcare foundation, promoting the care exchange system with the assistance of the professional careers and the application of modern technological equipments, and the residents’ autonomy which enables them to generate new idea for themselves and be more healthier to do what they want to do . The questionnaires were distributed to 102 persons. According to the statistic conclusion of postulation I, “age” and “with or without children” are related to “move into the similar ideal healthcare center or not.” That is, the younger and those without children will be the main customers in the future. According to the statistic conclusion of postulation II, “the ideal retirement center with diversification management”, designed in this study, will fit the ideal life style of the retired in the future. Therefore, industrialists planning to invest the aged-oriented industrials should re-design their blueprints so that the diversification management can work forever.

Under the dramatically change of environment, Taiwanese enterprises are confronting great challenges. Prior studies suggested that companies diversifying their product offering or geographic scope for gaining profits and improving competitive advantages. Although diversification in product or geographic scope does bring benefits for companies, organizational cost derived from diversification may decrease the benefits of diversification. Hence, this study engaged in the internationalization-performance relationship and explored the moderating effects of innovation and management & marketing intensities. Additionally, Taiwanese firms were used as data sample, in the hope this research can provide as worthy reference for enterprises. For statistical analysis, we used STATA v.11.0 to assist us analyzing the eight-year panel data. Heteroscedasticity Test, Unit Root test, Autocorrelation Test, Correlation Coefficient and Generalized Linear Square estimation were conducted to testify our framework and hypothesis. Our results indicated that different innovation and management & marketing intensity do moderate the internationalization-performance relationship. The notable fact is that in high level of country diversification, higher innovation intensity results in better performance. For management & marketing intensity, the combination of lower level of foreign sales ratio and lower management & marketing intensity results in comparatively better performance of firms.

Full textOrganizational researchers have long considered innovation a critical activity. While insightful regarding the nature of the innovation process and the rewards and risk associated with innovation, prior work has neglected the perspective that innovations function within a firm's wider product portfolio. This perspective enables assessment of when innovations truly generate value for firms and the mechanisms through which it does so. I propose a general theory for how innovation creates new value for a firm and apply this theory to understanding how new value from innovation is reflected in the changes it manifests in the diversity of a firm's product portfolio.
This dissertation addresses these issues by examining how innovation introductions drive two types of changes in the firm's portfolio - product portfolio and within-brand portfolio diversification - and how those changes influence the new value firms will capture. In addition, I examine the degree to which these outcomes are contingent upon the characteristics of the innovation itself. Thus, I address the inherent interdependencies in managing innovations while still capturing the influence of individual innovation characteristics.
The importance of this topic lies in both theory and practice. Theoretically, this work sheds light on the degree to which innovation value is a function of the value accrued to the innovation itself and its interdependency with the firm's overall product and brand portfolios. Practically, understanding how the new value from innovation incorporates the effect of the innovation on the firm's portfolio enables firms to grasp how decisions they make regarding innovation pipelines and in managing their overall portfolio influences their expected success.

Full textThis doctoral research establishes an integrated vision of the territory based on the definition of a green infrastructure approach of interconnection between the urbanized coastal landscape and the interior rural areas of Algarve region, encouraging heterogeneity of its touristic products as a way to adapt the region to climate change impacts as a factor of regional resilience. Simultaneously, linked to future climate change, sea level rise and the potential beach area reduction, sun and beach tourism could face a decline, constraining the resilience of regions that strongly depends on this tourism product, such as Algarve region, southern Portugal, and the municipalities of Silves, Albufeira and Loulé That said, one strategy of regional resilience enhancement could involve, on one hand, the containment of insistent and trend of coastal urban expansion and, on the other, the consolidation of other sustainable tourism types, such as nature-based tourism and cultural-landscape touring, sustained on Green Infrastructure, as a cultural and systemic adaptation strategy, diminishing regional asymmetries between coastal and interior areas through integrated landscape management. This study uses an innovative methodological approach in Landscape Management, based on public participation methods to be applied among tourists, residents, experts, stakeholders and tour operators, Delphi technique, Multicriteria Evaluation and SWOT Analysis, in order to outline an implementation strategy for a green infrastructure as a tool to enhance the resilience of this touristic area, substantiating the current practices in tourism promotion and regional planning.
