Full textThe aim of this essay has been to study a special category of ground forces, designatedSpecialised Ground Forces, in the context of a Swedish security policy with a focus onmatters outside Sweden’s borders, yet within a European context. To fulfil the aim newmilitary strategy challenges are examined. The following questions are posed:1. What significance could the Specialised Ground Forces be assigned to achieve in view ofthe objectives of Swedish military strategic?2. What role can the Specialised Ground Forces assume within the broader participation ofSwedish Armed Forces in international operations?3. What role can the Specialised Ground Forces have when compared to equivalentEuropean forces?4. What role could the Specialised Ground Forces play against the backdrop of deficienciesand needs related to the European Security and Defence Policy deficiencies when itcomes to military capability and forces?I have studied texts and analysed the objectives of Swedish military strategy, the complexityof today’s military operations and the deficiencies of European Security and Defence Policyconcerning military capability and forces have been studied and analysed. Furthermore,French, British, Finnish and Norwegian Armed Forces’ general structures have beencompared to detect both similarities and differences. The overall conclusion is that the Specialised Ground Forces could be given a moreprominent position within Swedish military strategy. They contribute in a significant way tothe national rapid response capability and, in a Swedish as well as European perspective theybridge the he gap between Special Operations Forces on the one hand and ManoeuvreForces on the other hand.

Svensson, Magnus.
NATO, USA, Great Britain and Russia are among others using the task raid for ground forces and experiences from e.g. the war in Iraq 2003 have shown that they could have great importance. Raids are considered to correspond to manoeuvre theory, but raids are not to be found as a task for Swedish ground forces.
This paper is analyzing the task raid for ground forces, developing two indicators for raids and with the help of these examining how raids are compatible with the armed forces present doctrine and field manual for ground operations.
The investigation shows that raids are not compatible with the present doctrine and field manual for ground operations. E.g. is it considered to disagree not to keep land lines of communications open. Parts of the indicators are however directly or indirectly considered compatible.
Persson, Anders. "Var står den västliga Airpower-teorin kontra den praktiska tillämpningen idag? : en prövning av rådande US Air Force och US Army doktriner mot användningen av Airpower under Irakkriget (2003)." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-1708.
Full textThe thesis starts with a historical background of the doctrine development in boththe US Air Force and the US Army. It concludes that there was a joint understandingduring the Second World War but their view during the Cold war seemed todepart. The current doctrines are studied and examined. The conclusion in this part is thatthere is a discrepancy regarding where on the battlefield the decisive action willtake place. The US Air Force emphasize the importance of the battle in the Deepoperations area while the US Army emphasize the battle in the Close operationsarea. After this doctrine study, Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) is studied. The jointintegration during OIF is examined with the focus on the use of Airpower in theair-land arena. The conclusion is that never in the history of Airpower has theintegration with landpower been higher.A discussion regarding the results from the earlier chapters concludes that whilethe US is a (the only?!) superpower also in the joint operations arena, there arestill some lessons to be learned and some areas of potential improvement. The thesis concludes with a reflection regarding the Swedish Armed Forces capabilitiesand possibilities in the air-land integration arena.

Svensson, Anders. "Infanteri : det bortglömda vapnet." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-1213.
Full textStarting with the direction stated in the Swedish Armed Forces’ reply to the Swedish governmentdefence policy 2009, according to my analysis we are heading towards a new main focus inour capability and force development. On the one hand a priority and focus on land operations, and on the other hand a considerable increase in capability and volume regarding so-called lightinfantry and ground combat. This requires, from today’s starting point, a resumption ofcompetence and ability when it comes to infantry and ground combat. The purpose of this essay isto look into whether today’s training in units with the core capability to fight on their feet, can beseen as so-called light infantry or if it is something else. This essay compares the training in ground combat being conducted in the airborne battalion, amphibious battalion and the light mechanized battalion with the characteristics of so-called lightinfantry. The core question being answered is formulated as follows: Are Swedish ground combatforces being given relevant training in proportion to the characteristics of so-called light infantrytoday. The result of this essay shows that the airborne squadron is definitely being given a relevanttraining in ground combat in accordance with my analysis of light infantry characteristics today. This is also true for the amphibious rifle coy, whose training in ground combat is in line with thedevelopment towards a light ground combat unit, with a distinct focus on offensive operations andground combat. The light mechanized infantry company’s distinguishing mark is ground combatin the urban environment. My research shows that the areas that need to be developed in theircombat training today are small unit tactics and the capability to fight on their feet in restrictiveterrain without the support of infantry vehicles. This is in order to fully, and in conformity withairborne and amphibious units, act as a true “light infantry”.

Full textThe purpose of this paper is to examine if Grkpbv 90120 (Mortar Combat Vehicle90120) is a system for the future, and can continue to constitute an indirect firesupport system even for urban warfare. The transformation of the Swedish Armed Forces affects, among other things, achange in tasks and the introduction of Network Centric Defence. One of theimplications is an increased significance of urban warfare, especially whenkeeping peace support operations and global urbanisation trends in mind. Theproblem comes out of the fact that Grkpbv 90120 was originally intended for atype of unit that normally does not fight in urban terrain. By examination of theterrain and its conditions for combat, it has been possible to specify requirementsfor the indirect fire support system of an attached unit. Subsequently, therequirements have been compared to the abilities of Grkpbv 90120. Urban warfareconstitutes hilly terrain characterised by difficulty of observation, short firingdistances, proximity to protection, three-dimensional combat and the mix ofcivilians, friends and foes. Grkpbv 90120 fulfils a number of basic requirementsfor urban warfare, but must be developed within the areas of target engagementand protection, among other things, precision engagements, gradable effect andpenetration and also protection against handheld weapons at every angle of attack, also during darkness. After some development, the Grkpbv 90120 will be an indirect fire supportsystem for an attached unit, which is well suited for future urban warfare.

Gustafsson, Anders. "Interoperabilitet mellan mark- och flygstridskrafter : En nulägesanalys av Försvarsmaktens styrande och inriktande dokument utifrån Michael Codners och Ingvar Sjöbloms interoperabilitetsteori." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-4627.
Full textThe Swedish Armed Forces tend to ask themselves if it is sufficiently multinational interoperablefor participation in international operations. An equally valid question today should be whether theSwedish Armed Forces are sufficiently nationally / internally interoperable, between their branchesof service, to be able to conduct independent operations based on the joint warfare theory. The lack of ability to joint warfare in the armed forces in general and the Swedish Armed Forcesspecially constitutes the essay´s fundamental problem. By using Codners and Sjöbloms custominteroperability theory, the Swedish Armed Forces documents were analyzed to highlight anyweaknesses related to joint warfare and national interoperability between Ground and Air Forces. The survey shows weaknesses linked to the custom theory and Swedish Armed Forces governingdocuments. The ability of a national interoperability is limited between Ground and Air Forcestoday, mostly because of weaknesses in the Swedish Armed Forces strategic concept which doesnot describe the importance of joint warfare at all levels sufficiently. This leads to deficienciesreflected in doctrines, regulations, technology, techniques and exercises. Lack of common documents, techniques, methods and exercises in turn affects armed services understanding of theirdifferent backgrounds and unique perspectives. The result will therefore be low national interoperabilityamong the armed services.
