Between 1879 and 1882, large amounts of relief were dispensed in Ireland by a range of state, private, clerical and political organisations and agencies. According to Cormac Ó Gráda, £800,000 in private charity and up to £2.4 million in government aid was expended in an attempt to alleviate the extreme distress of the period. That expenditure was greater than the £1.2 million in rent reductions secured by the 275,525 tenants who entered the courts of the Land Commission in 1881, factors that are seen as central to the deflation of the Land War. A trial translocation to establish a new fluttering shearwater (Puffinus gavia) colony is reported. From 1991 to 1996, 334 fluttering shearwater chicks were transferred from Long Island to Maud Island, Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. Chicks were artificially housed and hand-fed until fledging. Overall fledging success was 82%, 32 of the 273 chicks that fledged returned to Maud Island, and 30 have bred. Mean age of first breeding was 6.8 years (range 5-10 years). Returning chicks were heavier at fledging and spent longer on Maud Island than chicks that did not return. Transferred chicks showed

The experimental objective was to investigate xylanase efficacy in growing pigs fed a diet high in insoluble corn fiber and afforded a longer adaptation period than typically reported in the literature. Sixty gilts (25.4 ± 0.9 kg BW; L337 × Camborough), were blocked by weight, housed individually, and randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments: a low-fiber control [LF; 6.9% non-starch polysaccharides (NSP)], a 30% corn bran high-fiber control (HF; 17.6% NSP),

This chapter focuses on the politics of Queen Anne’s army, as successive ministries, with the Crown’s backing, attempted to ‘model’ the army to bolster their own position and aims. In an increasing tense political environment, and as the question of the succession to the throne became pressing, the army was divided by party politics, and party allegiance determined army appointments. The chapter examines Anne’s deteriorating relationship with her exceptionally successful captain-general, John Churchill, 1st duke of Marlborough. Abstract The general election of May 1929, and the ensuing entry into office of the Labour government, marked an epoch in Churchill’s life. At the time, neither he nor anyone else could tell what economic and political hurricanes were soon going to hit them. Labour with 288 seats had become the biggest party in the House and the Liberals, reunited under Lloyd George but numbering no more than fifty-nine, were going to keep it in office instead of helping the Conservatives to keep it out. This was enough to signal to Churchill the opportunity to embark on two new ventures: the beginning of a gr
