Full textHow does the writing, for the french – algerian autor, signify for having recourse to weapons ?First of all, my dissertation deals with a contextual, historical and sociological analysis of Leila Marouane’s novels before analyzing the relationship between violence and writing in the postcolonial context. My thesis is about, showing the relationship between the history of Algeria and French language postcolonial literature, and how the novelist reappropriates this history both by the writing of the violence she suffered and by the writing of the overthrow of violence. How does the necessity of writing have a link with violence? What are the stylistic and narrative manifestations? We chose to put the word “violence” in plural forms in our title, because it is polymorphic and multifactorial. In addition to the fact no thesis has yet been entirely devoted to the works of Leila Marouane, the manifestations of recurring female violence were relevant to understand. First, the heroines seem to be victims, then they become criminals, and this is what we can notice in this corpus: testify to the putting in words of phenomenon of reversal of the violence. Through a raw and cynical language that is symptomatic of a resumption of power, the novelist denounces traumas, the confiscation of identity and feminity, religious obscurantism and the weight of tradition, but she also says the need to strive always towards an “elsewhere”, geographical or fantasized

Full textThis study illustrates how economic and geographical analysis tools can be combined to provide an insight into how small-scale food industries are organized and how they function in maroua, the capital of the northermost province of cameroon. The cereal transformation sector, as well as the food street sector and the drink production sector, have been studied to demonstrate the impact of small businesses of this type on the town's structure as well as on its economic activity, such as employment and revenue. The more important aspects of the sectors' organization have also been discussed. In any company, several logics of action (merchant, technical, social, magic,. . . ) run together. The different functions of a company are very linked together and they settle a system which is finalized by the entrepreneur strategy. As such, analysing a small business implies a strategic analysis of all these contributing factors. This strategic analysis method leads to a better understanding of all the different varieties of small-scale food industries in maroua (resulting from each different entrepreneurial strategy, the available resources in company's area and the action logics choice), and also of how the variety of small businesses, in turn, influences the physical organization of the town itself

Full textThis research wants to transcribe and analyze the Syriac Hymnody of the Maronite Church in order to create a typology. The Maronite Church has conserved its musical and liturgical identity along with its communion with the Universal Church. I based my work on some recording done by Father Ivar Schmutz-Schwaller, from the University of Cologne. In his field trip to Lebanon in 1972, he recorded Father Maroun Mrad, a cantor from the Antonine Maronite Order, while he was singing capella the whole repertoire of the Syriac hymns. The methodology applied here consists in creating a diagram of musical analysis that can summarize the whole piece and simplify the analysis. In fact, each diagram contains all the degrees of the scale and determines its genre (Zalzalian, Hijaz or Diatonic). With the help of some signs, we indicate the basic notes (initial, tenor, temporary ending note and the ending note of the piece) and the number of their movements. With the help of these diagrams, we chose to consider the relation between the “tenor” of the piece and its ending note as criteria for this classification. In fact the pieces that has their tenor equal to their ending note belong to type 1. In the type 2, the interval between the tenor and the ending note is a second, in type 3 a third, in type 4 a fourth and in type 5 a fifth. This typology would help us to better classify these hymns and, furthermore, to analyze other aspects of them
Kuh, Bang Jacob. "Public private partnership in the Cameroonian health system : a case study of staff secondment into the Maroua – Mokolo Diocese." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13134.
Full textLower to middle-income countries are often unable to provide comprehensive health care to their citizens, and weak health systems have increasingly been identified as a key factor in this failure. Many interventions are being implemented to strengthen the health systems of lower to middle-income countries. Public-private partnership (PPP) in health care has been identified as one such key strategy and solution. Although the specific rewards of-or obstacles to PPP have not yet been strongly evidenced, PPP interventions are being advised and adopted in many countries as a key health systems intervention. It is therefore important to assess and understand the effects of such PPP efforts. This study focuses on a particular PPP arrangement in Cameroon –between non-profit faith-based providers and the Cameroonian Ministry of Health. This partnership is based primarily on the secondment of government-employed health workers into the faith-based health system. This case study focuses in particular on this arrangement as it is experienced in the Catholic Maroua-Mokolo Diocese in the Far North Region of Cameroon. This study finds that although PPP is considered to be helpful in strengthening the national health systems functioning –in this case, all of the focus has been on the secondment mechanism and visible resourcing. Not enough attention has been given to the less visible aspects of partnership such as clashes between workers’ aspirations or organisation cultures. This study demonstrates the problems inherent in an applied systems intervention that disrupts existing modes of operation, and does not answer to individuals' aspirations. It is demonstrated that such an intervention mainly results in various forms of resistance rather than immediately strengthened partnership.

Full textIn the middle-size cities of Garoua and Maroua in Northern Cameroon, it is said that “chiefs”, those having authority over a family, a town quarter, a city or, formally, a kingdom, should be « like great trash piles ». This proverb thus posits a privileged link between authority and the exercise of power, and the management of waste: a chief should adopt a patient and hieratic attitude towards the insults and complaints he receives from his subjects like so much filth; but also, in keeping with an esoteric understanding developed by local religions and taken up within an Islamic framework, he is expected to exhibit the magical and other powers that are held to arise from large and ancient heaps of rubbish. In the light of local conceptions relating to bodily excreta, refuse and the residues of daily activities, the control and handling of rubbish appears as an essential component of a distinctive “governmentality” (Foucault). The latter operates though specific “techniques of the body” and “techniques of the self” aimed at disentangling oneself from one’s bodily and material waste products. A genealogical analysis of the discourses and practices of individual and institutional waste management, since the founding of these two cities in the 18th century to the privatisation of this public service at the beginning of the 21st century, shows how, in this context, trash piles act as veritable “devices” of power, and the control of filth as a powerful instrument for governing the self and others

Full textOur thesis is about the abortion in Cameroon in two cities Eséka and Maroua. We aim to understand the stresses related to abortion in urban areas in a context where there are specific medical and legal provisions. An empirical study was conducted in two locations. This fieldwork, we observed that there is for women at the medical level, the possibility of support for post-abortion care, regardless of the conditions of its realization. From a legal standpoint, the decision to have an abortion outside the defined legal requirements remains problematic for women and for those who resort to abortion outside this framework. We affirm that procreative norms that women face daily, in particular those related to pregnancy, can encourage them to resort to abortion, although this is highly regulated. The theoretical framework combines both sociological theory of experience, the ethnographic approach of the context (global and local) and the cases studies related to abortion. From this perspective, we analyze the abortion from the experiences and individual stories of women related to procreation and pregnancy in one hand, as well as from difficulties related to norms imposed by social institutions like the family or the State in the other hand. This is mostly to show through this specific experience, implementation challenges that come with the translation of recommendations made at the international level to the local level in the particular case of abortion
