Full textThe two aims of this thesis are the study of the architectural activity and the urban development of the city of Marrakech in the sa'adi period (16-17 centuries). We tried in a bibliographical and historical introduction to approach the frame of the political, economic, social and cultural life. We also tried to evaluate the results of former researches. The first part of this work is confined to the monographical and analytical study of the principal monumental types of the sa'adi city (religious complex, madrasa, funeral complex, maristan). The aim of the second part is to study of the urban space with its three elements: the medina, the qasba (power residence) and the mallah (jewish quarter). Also, in this part we attempted to study of the open spaces (places & gardens) and the system of water canalization in the city's quarters

Full textThe architecture of marrakech's houses is characterized by its fi delity to domestic architectural traditions of islamic west and by some specific elements. The traditional aspects concern the house's plan with a central courtyard and the use, along centuries, of pise and bricks. Its own characteristics are the importance and the priority accorded to the inhabiting and reception room and not to the patio anymore. More attention is then given to the reception room wich is duly decorated than the patio ; even if the latter is not neglected. Another characteristic shows in the floor conception. Its devided in two distinct and independent parts. One is opened to foreign guests and has its own stairecases wich geos up from the house's entrance the second one is reserved to the family and is connected to the heart of the house

Full textUrban planning is mainly concerned with urban space and temporalities. Socio-spatial dynamics are in perpetual interaction. The city is assessed in terms of the dynamics involved; which result from the reciprocal effects of space and society. Space is a product of society; the relationship in this respect is neither totally causal nor subsequent, it is rather interactional. The medina can be considered as an arena where interests are in conflict. Unfortunately, for a long time, collective interests have been subject to the law of individual interests that only see the short term. If no way out is possible, the medina will go straight, in the long term, to its ruin or even its disappearance. And to find a solution to this situation, it is therefore essential to propose a new urbanity to the medina, that is to say, a horizon of integrated development corresponding to the needs of a modern agglomeration, but in a city guardian of its history and its heritage. And to achieve this, it is urgent to proceed with a process of enhancement and safeguard of this urban heritage increasingly threatened. It is therefore time to start thinking and collaborating in order to come up with a plan of action dedicated to highlight the medina to give it life and not to consider it as a simple neighborhood among 'other
