Abstract:
High divorce rates in Muslim marriages continue to be a concern for Malay community leaders and policy makers in Singapore. Since 1969, Malay community organisations here have offered marriage preparation courses to reduce the incidence of divorce. Today, a range of such pre-marriage courses continue to be provided by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, Muslim organisations and private educational groups that are involved in marriage counselling and consultation. In this article, I examine the handbooks that have accompanied courses sponsored by the Ministry. Their content spells out the skills needed to realise a “marriage of a lifetime”. Whilst prescriptions have responded to societal changes, a closer scrutiny of instructions in these manuals unfolds notions of the ‘ideal’ Muslim husband and wife that continue to stress men as providers and women as primary caregivers. Prioritising communication skills of the individual, as these manuals do, does little to change household gender inequalities in the long run.

Lees, Robert Frederick. "The outcomes of three marriage preparation programs." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27249.

Full text
Abstract:
The outcomes of marriage preparation on three variables, a) willingness to seek help with marriage, b) attitude towards the church and c) relationship beliefs were investigated in a field setting. Decisions regarding outcomes were made by juxtaposing findings from a recurrent institutional cycle design, and the pre-posttest design. In addition, post-program interviews were employed to determine the impact of the programs. The sample consisted of 288 participants, with 96 in each of three well established, regularly offered marriage preparation programs (Anglican, Roman Catholic and Couples' Workshop). Pre-posttest measures were collected on 48 subjects in each program, and then on 48 of their cohorts at the next offering of the program. There were no differences found between the three leadership conditions within each program. Statistical results indicated a significant effect for the entire sample after marriage preparation on the Willingness To Seek Help With Marriage and Relationship Beliefs Inventories. There were no significant differences on the Attitude Towards the Church Inventory. Changes in willingness to seek help with marriage and relationship beliefs were found in the Couples' Workshop sample, but not in the Roman Catholic or Anglican samples. Differential comparison indicated statistically significant differences between participants in the Couples' Workshop and the other two programs on measures of willingness to seek help with marriage and relationship beliefs. Qualitative reports based on 30 post-program interviews pointed to the importance of experiential and skill training methods in explaining the measured differences between the programs.

Abstract:
Since 1995, when young people began to take care of religious education and spirituality, the Catholic Church hierarchy and the Vatican level, as well as national, this, Lithuanian Bishops' Conference expressed concern and wondered how to prepare young people for life - family. It was a really difficult situation in the family post-communist Lithuania. Me as a clergyman, was very good and happy to see, and thus be involved in the preparation for marriage - Catholic family study. This creates a 1998 first marriage love newlyweds. Lithuanian Bishops' Conference it has been approved in 2009 to adjust.

Abstract:
Marriage is perhaps the most popular voluntary institution in Canadian society. Fifty-six percent of British Columbians choose to be married in a Christian church. Most of these couples will find that they are required to participate in a marriage preparation program. Little is known about these marriage preparation opportunites, or about the individuals who provide these opportunites. Recent studies (Bader, Riddle & Sinclair, 1981; Ridley, Avery, Harrell, Leslie & Dent, 1982) have begun to demonstrate the effectiveness of the field of marriage preparation, but no studies examine the qualifications of educators. This study had two objectives: 1) to measure the knowledge of marriage and family concepts of marriage educators providing marriage preparation and 2) to re-test Wright's (1976) finding that clergy do not perceive themselves to be competent providers of marriage preparation. A random sample of 25% of Anglican Church in Canada and United Church of Canada congregations in British Columbia (n=117) resulted in 62 marriage educators responding to this study. This represents a response rate of 57.7%. The respondents were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire which allowed for the collection of demographic information about the congregations and respondents as well as the measurement of the dependent variable perceived competence, six independent variables and four control variables. As no instruments to measure knowledge of marriage and family concepts were available, a measure was developed for this study and is known as the Knowledge of Marriage and Family Concepts Instrument (KMFC). Respondents were found to have moderate scores on KMFC and perceived themselves to be reasonably competent providers of marriage preparation. No significant results were found for the relationships between either of the dependent variables and the independent variables. Post hoc analysis determined significant relationships between knowledge of marriage and family concepts and gender, and between perceived competence and total number of hours spent in marriage preparation. This study implies that clergy need increased training in content areas relevant to marriage preparation. Further research studies are suggested.

Abstract:
There are practical ways Christians can stimulate marriage. First, there are beautiful stories about marriage out there; tell them. Second, cultivate marriage-friendly subcultures; participation in vibrant Christian organizations can resist the emergent global “monoculture” that undermines marriage. Third, construct the home as a haven from market mentalities. Fourth, seek improvement in premarital preparation; new marriages need mentors to help them understand what to expect. Fifth, aid and support suffering marriages in your midst; there is such a thing as the “good enough” marriage. Sixth, parents need to be thoughtful about the relationship advice they give (or fail to offer) their children. Seventh, young adults should weigh the costs and benefits of living at home until they are married. Eighth, governments should consider creative ways to support marriage. They can be expensive, but it is riskier to ignore the decline of marriage than to explore new ways to revitalize it.

Abstract:
Since its beginning in the postwar era, marriage preparation has enabled parishes to mediate both Catholic theology and broader cultural messages surrounding marriage. Drawing on archival research on two important Catholic family movements from the postwar era and ethnographic observation of marriage preparation in several contemporary parishes in Western Washington, this chapter highlights parish efforts to collectively engage in meaning-making by transmitting a Catholic vision of marriage to individual parishioners. While the vision of a “good” family has changed little from the postwar era to today, therapeutic cultural discourses about self-development and changing marital norms have entered into marriage preparation. Moreover, shifts in the structure of religious authority mean that who does the speaking has changed drastically. Lay persons are increasingly empowered to produce local Catholic culture and make sense of Catholic teachings through the marriage preparation process.

Each book includes key debates, typical questions, diagram answer plans, suggested answers, author commentary, and tips to gain extra marks. This chapter focuses on nullity and void, voidable, and non-existent marriages. The first question requires students to analyse the difference between void and voidable marriages, the grounds for which are contained in ss. 11 and 12 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. The second is an essay question that considers the concept of non-marriage or non-existent marriage, which is regulated by case law. The third question is a problem question that examines void and voidable marriages and covers issues such as bigamy, prohibited degrees of relationship, gender reassignment, and lack of consummation. The final question asks candidates whether the concept of voidable marriage should be abolished.
