Lees, Robert Frederick. "The outcomes of three marriage preparation programs." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27249.

Full text
Abstract:
The outcomes of marriage preparation on three variables, a) willingness to seek help with marriage, b) attitude towards the church and c) relationship beliefs were investigated in a field setting. Decisions regarding outcomes were made by juxtaposing findings from a recurrent institutional cycle design, and the pre-posttest design. In addition, post-program interviews were employed to determine the impact of the programs. The sample consisted of 288 participants, with 96 in each of three well established, regularly offered marriage preparation programs (Anglican, Roman Catholic and Couples' Workshop). Pre-posttest measures were collected on 48 subjects in each program, and then on 48 of their cohorts at the next offering of the program. There were no differences found between the three leadership conditions within each program. Statistical results indicated a significant effect for the entire sample after marriage preparation on the Willingness To Seek Help With Marriage and Relationship Beliefs Inventories. There were no significant differences on the Attitude Towards the Church Inventory. Changes in willingness to seek help with marriage and relationship beliefs were found in the Couples' Workshop sample, but not in the Roman Catholic or Anglican samples. Differential comparison indicated statistically significant differences between participants in the Couples' Workshop and the other two programs on measures of willingness to seek help with marriage and relationship beliefs. Qualitative reports based on 30 post-program interviews pointed to the importance of experiential and skill training methods in explaining the measured differences between the programs.

Abstract:
Since 1995, when young people began to take care of religious education and spirituality, the Catholic Church hierarchy and the Vatican level, as well as national, this, Lithuanian Bishops' Conference expressed concern and wondered how to prepare young people for life - family. It was a really difficult situation in the family post-communist Lithuania. Me as a clergyman, was very good and happy to see, and thus be involved in the preparation for marriage - Catholic family study. This creates a 1998 first marriage love newlyweds. Lithuanian Bishops' Conference it has been approved in 2009 to adjust.

Farnden, Rosan. "Knowledge of marriage and family concepts and perceived competence of marriage educators conducting marriage preparation in two Protestant denominations in British Columbia." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29683.

Abstract:
Marriage is perhaps the most popular voluntary institution in Canadian society. Fifty-six percent of British Columbians choose to be married in a Christian church. Most of these couples will find that they are required to participate in a marriage preparation program. Little is known about these marriage preparation opportunites, or about the individuals who provide these opportunites. Recent studies (Bader, Riddle & Sinclair, 1981; Ridley, Avery, Harrell, Leslie & Dent, 1982) have begun to demonstrate the effectiveness of the field of marriage preparation, but no studies examine the qualifications of educators. This study had two objectives: 1) to measure the knowledge of marriage and family concepts of marriage educators providing marriage preparation and 2) to re-test Wright's (1976) finding that clergy do not perceive themselves to be competent providers of marriage preparation. A random sample of 25% of Anglican Church in Canada and United Church of Canada congregations in British Columbia (n=117) resulted in 62 marriage educators responding to this study. This represents a response rate of 57.7%. The respondents were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire which allowed for the collection of demographic information about the congregations and respondents as well as the measurement of the dependent variable perceived competence, six independent variables and four control variables. As no instruments to measure knowledge of marriage and family concepts were available, a measure was developed for this study and is known as the Knowledge of Marriage and Family Concepts Instrument (KMFC). Respondents were found to have moderate scores on KMFC and perceived themselves to be reasonably competent providers of marriage preparation. No significant results were found for the relationships between either of the dependent variables and the independent variables. Post hoc analysis determined significant relationships between knowledge of marriage and family concepts and gender, and between perceived competence and total number of hours spent in marriage preparation. This study implies that clergy need increased training in content areas relevant to marriage preparation. Further research studies are suggested.

Gotham, Nicholas. "Form and freedom : the marriage of musical systems and intuition." Thesis, Brunel University, 2013. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7636.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis includes an Introduction, which explains some of the ideas and procedures involved in a series of compositions I produced during the period from October, 2008 through November, 2011, a discussion of the works themselves individually and in roughly the same chronological order in which they were composed, and a summary of Conclusions which may be drawn. Included as an Appendix are texts for reference while listening to the vocal works. Complete scores of the works with representative recordings make up the main body of the thesis, except in the case of the solo piano suite Equilibria, where the score is included but the work remained unrecorded at the time of submission. Ideas discussed include some which unite or distinguish the processes of musical improvisation with/from more methodical modes of composition. Also the theme of musical collaboration is considered in contrast to the notion of the composer who works – or appears to work – in isolation. Research into traditions of music is regarded as important to compositional practice overall. Among the Conclusions is that my own orientation to these ideas places me in the category of post-minimalist composers. Throughout this discussion I have involved commentary from other relevant and important thinkers, critics and composers.

Weiss, Jennifer M. "Marital Preparation, Experiences, and Personal Qualities in a Qualitative Study of Individuals in Great Marriages." DigitalCommons@USU, 2014. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/2120.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study presents findings regarding marital preparation for individuals in great marriages. Data from a national qualitative study of individuals in self-identified great marriages were used. Thirty-eight individuals were identified as being married for 20 years or less, and therefore, chosen as the subsample for the current study. Their rich, narrative responses were analyzed and coded, using a qualitative method, to identify what marriage preparation occurred for these couples prior to marriage and contributed to their successful marriages. Findings from this research provide helpful, descriptive data on the experiences and socialization of individuals that influenced their choice in a marriage partner as well as later marital success. Implications for practitioners, researchers, and individuals are provided.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examined the influence that premarital preparation had on the level of complaints in marriages and the amount of perceptual accuracy that couples had in their marriage. The data for this thesis were taken from Wave I and Wave II of the Utah Governor’s Commission on Marriage study on newlyweds. The research examined four questions: (1) Do husbands and wives who have reported higher helpfulness of premarital preparation activities have fewer strong complaints in their marriage? (2) Do husbands and wives who have reported the helpfulness of premarital preparation activities have greater perceptual accuracy in their marriages? (3) Which types of premarital preparation activities are associated with strong complaints? (4) Which types of premarital preparation activities do husbands and wives find to be most helpful? Results revealed that those who reported the helpfulness of premarital preparation activities had fewer complaints than those who did not find those activities helpful. This study finds no statistical significance between the reported helpfulness of premarital preparation activities and perceptual accuracy. The relationship between premarital preparation activities and strong complaints is presented. Preparation activities that husbands and wives found to be most helpful are ranked and presented. A discussion of the findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research is also presented.

Abstract:
Meeting with the judges of the Roman Rota and its staff on the 22nd of December, 2011, pope Benedict XVI talked over personal preparation for entering marriage and, especially, mentioned some requirements necessary to fulfill before allowing the spouses to express their matrimonial consent sacramentaly. The Church always, in a special way, takes care of marriage and, in order to protect and maintain it in a deep Christian spirit, furnishes not only relative canonical norms, but also provides certain pastoral assistance for the spouses enabling them responsibly and fruitfully be predisposed toward the holiness and duties of their new state and, afterwards, to contract their conjugal covenant validly and legitimately. Recently, mainly due to the superficial attitudes that flourish among the faithful toward understanding the dignity and aims of Christian marriage and the lack of adequate preparation that precedes its celebration, this institution undergoes some crisis. In this context, the role of the pastors of the Church making provisions to organize duly the assistance to the parties instructing them about the essence, rights and obligations of marriage, at the same time, investigating about the evidence that nothing stands against its valid and licit celebration, appears to be of essential value. Only after carrying out the necessary inquiries and diligently observing the norms issued by the local conference of bishops, the pastors can proceed to assist at a marriage. A... [to full text]

Abstract:
This is a systematic representative sample study of newlyweds designed to investigate aspects of participation in marriage preparation activities as well as determine what effect participation in activities had on marital satisfaction. A retrospective survey instrument was utilized which included the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale. Statistical analysis revealed that the majority of individuals in Utah prepare for marriage by visiting with parents or relatives, visiting with other married couples, and talking with religious leaders, and considered these activities to be helpful in their preparation. The small er percentage of individuals who participated in more formal preparation activities also considered these activities to be very helpful. Wives and husbands who attended a class and talked with religious leaders showed significant increases in marital satisfaction within a year after marriage. In addition, marital sati sfaction was increased for wives who read a book on marriage and for husbands who visited with their parents, relatives, or other married couples. Findings show that bringing children into marriage, parents' marital status, and age are factors associated with marital satisfaction.

Abstract:
Little is known about the role that personality and emotional readiness factors may play in participation and outcomes of premarital education programs in varying formats. Data collected via the RELATionship Evaluation Questionnaire (RELATE: Busby et al., 2001) was used to analyze how personality and emotional readiness factors affect perceived change and helpfulness in self-directed and workshop formats of premarital education for 384 individuals who participated in such interventions. Depression was significantly and negatively related to participant perception of positive change and helpfulness in a workshop setting. Kindness was positively and significantly related to perceived positive change in both workshop and self-directed formats, and income was negatively and significantly related to perceived positive change in workshop settings. Anxiety was significantly and positively related to perceived helpfulness in workshop settings. Implications of these findings are discussed. More research is needed to compare these results to other formats of premarital interventions, such as classes and counseling formats, and to more diverse population samples.

Abstract:
Although self-directed marriage and relationship education (MRE) has the potential to reach a larger or different audience than traditional MRE, little has been done to examine the characteristics of those who access self-directed materials. This study examined individual, couple, family, and sociocultural context variables that predicted participation in both self-directed and traditional MRE programs. A series of logistic regressions were conducted using SPSS 19.0. Different factors predicted participation for each intervention. For self-directed programs, those who were older, more educated, more religious, less materialistic, whose partners were more neurotic, who had been dating for a shorter amount of time, and who had poorer relationships with their mothers were more likely to participate, while a wider range of factors predicted participation in traditional programs. Family life educators should consider creating self-directed materials designed to reach a wider audience.

The objective of this research was to understand the process of the construction of the conjugal relationship from the sharing of intergenerational stories of a couple while preparing for marriage. In order to contextualize this study, a brief historical description of dating within the Brazilian context was presented; from the colonial period in Brazil to the current days including a discussion of the main tasks undertaken since the formation of the couple up to the of the first stage of the family life cycle and yet a presentation of what the family within an intergenerational perspective consists of. This was a qualitative research with an instrumental case outline. An engaged couple from the researcher's network of contacts was appointed and three meetings were conducted with the purpose of investigating the intergenerational stories and how this knowledge could be used in the construction process of conjugal relationship. In the meetings the instruments used were the semi-structured interviews and the genogram. This study highlighted the fact that the sharing of intergenerational stories during the marriage preparation period is essential in the process of building the conjugal relationship. The sooner the couple goes through this process; it will take more time to mature conjugal project. This study also paves the way for preventive work with couples and families in clinics, institutions and communities

Abstract:
As sometime course facilitator of the Marriage Preparation Course of my faith community, an Anglican Church of Southern Africa, I had become curious as to what meaning the couples had constructed of their participation in these courses, particularly relating to both the content and style of facilitating the Course. The research finding determined that the main value of the Course had been that the group discussions enabled couples to explore their personal positions on a number of issues related to marriage. The adoption of participative action research as a broad model for the Course is recommended to encourage the engagement between premarital couples and the course facilitator to create/find knowledges and practices that will prepare them for marriage. Furthermore, the course facilitator should adopt a not-knowing, curious stance toward the elements of marriage under discussion, employing the narrative tools of externalisation and deconstructive questioning to facilitate the couples' meaning-making.

Abstract:
This exploratory study followed up ten married couples who attended a voluntary six session psycho-educational Marriage Preparation Programme under the auspices of the Jewish Family and Community Council - Transvaal. A literature review on marriage preparation, evaluation and enrichment provided the framework for the study and interview schedule. The study aimed to confirm and/or modify the existing Marriage Preparation Programme and to explore marital adjustment in detail. The findings indicate : * Couples had positive recall of the programme. * Attending a Marriage Preparation Programme was not necessarily helpful but had a positive influence on couples' commitment. * Respondents experienced difficulties in loosening ties with their families. * The establishment of a family unit was central to marital adjustment. * Role allocation was influenced by role models in respondents' families of origin. * Dealing with socio-economic issues were exceptionally difficult. * Changing roles and expectations of parenthood affected respondents' style of parenting.

Abstract:
This exploratory study analyzes the content and structural marriage preparation needs of engaged individuals. The volunteer sample consists of 74 of engaged individuals who attended one of three bridal shows. Questionnaire results found that communication was the predominantly preferred topic area, followed by problem solving/conflict resolution, money/financial management, having children/parenting, and building friendship in marriage. Subjects also reported that their preferred format for marriage preparation is participating in group discussions and that programs being effective is the most important format attribute. Friends and relatives were found to be the most influential referral source for marriage preparation programs. Results support the recommendations that programs be approximately 10 hours in length and cost no more than $135.72. Respondents reported that the best time to offer workshops is on weeknights and strong support was shown for programs to be held in community centres. Results are discussed in terms of implications for future research, as well as for marriage preparation providers to use in the design, promotion, implementation, facilitation, and evaluation of marriage preparation programs.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis shows the current state and level of marriage preparation of the engaged couples within the Hradec Kralove diocese border region. The thesis examines and evaluates the status of the preparations in four vicariates in connection with the related church documents. The particular vicariates together with the qualified personnel are introduced and number of marriages for the past ten years is listed for a reference. The thesis characterises four different types of engaged couples and introduces several types of preparations. The current state of the preparations in the region is surveyed and findings are presented in the thesis. Among the preparations guided by a priest the thesis describes additional tools and techniques complementing the preparations. The final part of the thesis is dedicated to these complementary preparation tools and techniques which are presented, compared and evaluated here. The diploma thesis notices preparation of engaged couples with respect to the formation of the future family, which is encouraged by the thesis.

Vatican II provided the Catholic Church with an opportunity for deep reflection and to align its theological teachings with modern times. This reflection resulted in a resurgence of the importance of Christian marriage and family living. Beyond Vatican II, the Christian family has been described as a ‘domestic’ church. This description defines the family founded on marriage as a cornerstone for the church and society. The Church has realised that if she has to succeed in her mission of evangelisation, she needs to strengthen the families founded on the sacrament of marriage and also to take care of broken families. The theme of a ‘domestic church’ was further explored and discussed in the 1994 Special Synod for the Bishops of Africa. This synod strongly used the image of the family as an effective tool for evangelisation in Africa. The rationale for this emphasis was that the institution of the family founded on marriage is held in high esteem in Africa and it is one of the most important custodians of cultural values. This institution, the bishops argued, can now be used as a custodian for Christian values. Hence, the family founded on marriage will become a school where these values are cherished and taught to offspring. The family founded on marriage is celebrated across the global cultural spectrum. It is through the family that the age old wisdom of ancestors is propagated. This ensures the survival and the development of the different communities. Communities develop because they are built upon strong ethical, religious and cultural values which are safeguarded by the institution of the family founded on marriage. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is the custodian of life. Marriage is about life. Hence, the respect of human life is safeguarded by the family. The collapse of such a pivotal institution has serious implications for the community. The institution of the family founded on marriage is presented in this thesis as a turn around strategy to the challenge of moral permissiveness in our country. It is a commonly accepted theory that development can only take place where there is stability. The lack of infrastructural development in most African countries is due to lack of political stability. Instability often results in chaos and anarchy. Marriage promises stability which is rooted in the self giving of the couples. Such an environment becomes conducive for human life to be propagated, nurtured and developed. It further creates a sense of being loved and belonging to the child. These qualities are essential for proper and integral human development. Furthermore, marriage ties together the goals of parenting, namely, procreation and parenthood and they are inseparable. They prepare children for social integration. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate how the institution of the family founded on marriage can help us develop a coherent moral vision in South Africa. This turn around strategy is proposed by systematically analysing the causes and consequences of family breakdown. The thesis establishes that the institution of the family founded on marriage is undergoing a crisis. This crisis manifests itself through single-parenthood, high rate of divorce, fatherlessness, etc. The consequences of this crisis are not favourable for individuals and the society.
