Abstract:
This chapter examines the figure of the householder (gṛhastha), the lynchpin of the dharma system, occupying the second stage of the codified āśrama system. It first considers the word gṛhastha and notes that it has made its way into the dharma literature from Middle Indo-Aryan and heterodox religious circles. This terminological discontinuity suggests that there is also conceptual discontinuity between the Vedic married head of household and the householder depicted in the dharma texts. Since the householder must be married, the chapter then treats the institution of marriage: who and when to

Abstract:
Polygamy: A Very Short Introduction offers a broad global and temporal history of polygamy and its importance in a range of settings. Polygamy, or plural marriage, has been an accepted form of union in the majority of human societies. People living on every continent have practiced this form of marriage; some still do. Plural marriages, like more recent same-sex marriages, offer intriguing access to the workings of the institution of marriage, as well as the controversies linking public and private, sex and politics, that have surrounded it. Confrontations over this type of marriage have also

Abstract:
Marital love is rarely represented by poets, at least in their lyric poetry. Lyric, with its brevity, its intensity, its ellipses, seems ideally suited to a particular type of passionate love typified by novelty, absence, uncertainty. Conjugal love, powerful though it may be, lacks these particular qualities. Yet if the pleasure and even purpose of marriage lies in discovering freedom and self-realization within strictly prescribed limits, then lyric could well be seen as the genre most suited to marital love. This chapter examines the tradition of marriage lyric that has developed, for the mo

Abstract:
This book exemplifies the high quality of thoughtful discussion and debate that is possible on the issue of same-sex marriage. Authors are paired to address and respond to a particular topic, one in favor of state recognition of same-sex relationships, and one in favor of limiting state recognition to those relationships that have been traditionally recognized as marriages. Proposals to legalize same-sex marriage evoke strong response from those on both sides of the debate. Much has been written about the legal policy issues over the legal recognition of same-sex unions in the United States, y
