Combining processual and cultural meanings-orientated with post-functionalist agency-focused approaches to relatedness, this thesis examines the role of women in the reproduction of Cortorari kinship. Cortorari are a Romanian, “traditional” Gypsy society, kin-based, bilateral and endogamous, with a strong androcentric ideology. A qualitative phenomenological paradigm was utilized to explore the personal development, career and relational experiences of never-married childless working women in mid-life, who regarded themselves as satisfied. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine nuptial patterns among Chinese and Japanese American women. Specifically, this study compared the prevalence of and reasons for differential rates of marriage and timing of first marriage among non-Latino white, Chinese and Japanese American women.
