This thesis focuses on the study of the evolution of the security aspect of the migration policies in Morocco and Turkey in their relation with the development of the externalization processes of the European migration policies, within the Euro Mediterranean context marked by the “Arab Spring”. Morocco and Turkey play an important role in the management of migratory flows to the EU. Since the 70’s, a new era of European migration policies started, ending the so-called “sheltering” of the workforce that existed until then. These new policies have been marked by the securitization of migration and the externalization of the borders. This process led to the outsourcing of the EU’s border control to non-EU country members; moreover, the extension of the intervention space, including areas where its security forces can intervene, produced an extra-territorialisation of sovereignty and control of the EU. Morocco and Turkey are two different and distant countries that share proximity and a “privileged” status regarding their relations with the EU. They also share a long history of emigration, transit, and immigration. Nowadays as inmigration countries, they are facing the challenge to manage their old and new diversity, as a result of the “new inmigration”. This thesis provides a joint reflection about the evolution of the process of construction of a unifying national identity in both countries. It purported to demonstrate that the construction of identity according to a homogeneous national model clashes with the resistance to an important part of the citizenship in favour of the recognition of the right to be different. In this sense, if the construction of identity in both countries orients itself to the management of diversity in an open and global way, it would guarantee equal rights for all, responding to models that are coherent with the evolution of the social reality of the country.

Full textThis investigation analyzes the behavior adopted by the Spanish masonry in Morocco from its implantation at the end of the 19th century until its disappearance during the civil war due to the repression exerted against the order. The analysis starts from a colonial context of Muslim and Jewish majority, a context that will grant a differential character in raltion to the rest of the Spanish regions with masonic representation: immersed in a multicultural society with very significant ideological-religious and ethno-cultural differences, Freemasonry will fulfill different functions depending on the groups and individuals, depending on the institution itself and the periods in which it subsisted. But in general, it will reintroduce and reinvent, from its inception, the different elements that have constituted the Andalusian myth and essential masonic precepts, adjusting them to the colonial environment and to the political and contextual logics of the different Spanish governments and of the Hispanic-Moroccan authorities.

The main contribution of this PhD thesis is the analysis of linguistic conflicts taking place in the Moroccan situation of multilingualism. These linguistic conflicts are here related to the colonial past of the country and the social differences found in the Moroccan society nowadays.
The thesis is approached from a historical and critical point of view, to the point that the sociolinguistic history of Morocco, as an independent nation-state, together with all the transformations and socio-political changes known there, are presented. It is also examined the way in which those changes could have had an incidence in the sociolinguistic model and the linguistic policy implemented by the Moroccan state in order to manage the linguistic diversity and its general practices. This historical approach considers social and discursive processes as its object of analysis.
Before analysing discourses, a study about the current sociolinguistic complexity in Morocco and its link to socio-historical processes is offered. Through this study, the socio-political status of every linguistic variety used in the country is analysed, as well as the relationship among all them.
After this sociolinguistic revision, this work presents an in-depth critical analysis of the different discourses coming from socio-discursive groups associated to ideologies and claims in conflict. At this stage, the analysis focuses on the representation of languages and identities, on the one hand, and of the linguistic diversity and policies, on the other. Values ascribed to all these issues are also examined through the different discourses circulating within the Moroccan linguistic market: specifically, the previous dominant, the current dominant -including the legislative one- and an alternative amazigh discourses.
Finally, the thesis contributes to reveal the socio-political consequences derived from the linguistic order and policy imposed by the state supremacy, as well as the solution channels to the conflict. Those channels cover social and political steps, such as a linguistic democratization or the achievement of recognition and official status by the historically dominated and subordinated languages (i.e. Moroccan Arabic and amazigh).
Empez, Vidal Núria. "“¡Solo valiente!”
Full textThe purpose of this dissertation is to provide new data for the knowledge of unaccompanied minors (UAM), boys that under adult age undertake a migratory project alone. Most of them come from the Maghreb area (specially Moroccans) and their destiny or transit passes through Catalonia, especially the province of Barcelona. This dissertation is especially interested in children that have not been or are no longer in the protection system. Even though the ethnography, that combines participant observation with in-depth interviews and life story narratives, is based in Catalonia, a large part is based on the fieldwork in Morocco, mostly at the Tangier port, but also other neighborhoods and the hometown rural areas of some of the children whose itineraries are reconstructed in the thesis. The transnational perspective, has been a key guide in the design of the investigation, as It has permitted us to determinate the scope of the minors networks, and encompass their members as the 'transnational affected'. Therefore, among specific goals, I will provide data to improve comprehension on the children’s elections or choices and their behavior; data that highlights our knowledge about how they experiment the every day world. This thesis also pretends to analyze the necessities inside the protection system that are successfully covered, and those that are not; which are the rights that are being respected and which ones are being violated. Continuing with the specific objectives, they aim to provide not only a review of historical and current policies on foreigners and child protection treatment in the autonomous community of Catalonia, but also, the relations between individual processes (decisions taken) and these policies. Furthermore, it acknowledges mechanisms that influence the bonding or non-bonding of children with child protection institutions and mechanisms that make them run away. Ultimately, it tests the hypothesis that minors in street situation were not street minors before reaching the peninsula, and that the own protection system design for the UAM contributes to this unintended destiny. Lastly, the thesis provides a corpus of basic data in order to design effective and guarantee-based policies to protect children and adolescents that can be specified in projects and programs that fit their needs and characteristics. The following thesis is the result of 14 years of involved research with, for and about children who migrate alone, known as Unaccompanied Minors. Ii is structured in 14 chapters. Although it is primarily ethnographic, it is also the result of documentation on laws and administrative operations. It includes photographic support, it is complemented with several annexes and the link to the documentary that names the thesis. “Solo valiente” (only courageous).

Full textThe lastimportant military conflict involving Spanish troops hasn’t been studied in-depth until now from the academic field. This thesis aimsto cover some of the gapsin the literature about that war, providinga point of view distantfrom the ones that can be found in the current literature. Moreover, I intend to give a broad vision of the conflict, which untilnowhas been limited to the military clash between Spanish troops and Moroccan guerrillas. It’salso my aim tothink thoroughly abouttheunderlying causes of the conflict, by relating it to the decolonization of the Magreb context and the internal political situation of Morocco after its independence. These issues have been largely ignored in the literature, as well as the determining factors of the United States’ political action, another point being dealt within this thesis. Lastly, I linked the consequences of the struggletothe international policy of Morocco after King Hassan II ascended the throne.

Full textThis thesis deals with agricultural colonization in the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco (1912-1956) from the perspective of rural property management. It gives an approach to the moment in which emerged the need of agriculture modernization as an argument to justify colonial penetration. It also analyzes the implementation of a new property system in the area as a tool for the colonization and exploitation of the different types of property that existed in Morocco at the time: private properties, lands owned by the Spanish government, and Makhzen’s and Habous’ properties as well as the communal patrimony of the different tribes (qaba’il).
