Weir, Lucy Gabrielle Ann. "The cross-cultural rituals of twentieth-century dance : Mary Wigman, Martha Graham, Pina Bausch." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4033/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a re-reading of the development of twentieth-century dance, focusing on the choreographic work and creative processes of Mary Wigman, Martha Graham, and Pina Bausch. Using these individuals as markers of three distinct temporal stages of contemporary dance, I argue that avant-garde dance practice throughout the twentieth-century was irrevocably associated with, and influenced by, the aesthetics and ritual practices of non-Western cultures. Instead of charting a chronological structure, I have used a thematic framework based on the concept of ritual performance, beginning with fertility rites (as espoused by different choreographies of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring), before moving on to explore masking devices, conceptions of national and cultural identity, and mourning and commemoration. Through a series of individual case study analyses, this thesis maps the impact of inter-cultural exchange on the development of non-classical dance. I posit that, as modern dance emerged and evolved throughout the twentieth-century, practitioners consistently drew strong influence from cross-cultural aesthetics; I focus specifically on links between Western (represented by Germany and the United States) and non-Western (including Japanese and Native American) performance. Using evidence drawn from primary source material, including original film footage, photography and personal effects, I construct separate analyses of commonalities in the work of Wigman, Graham, and Bausch, arguing that the ritualistic themes of their work can be viewed as a pattern for the development of contemporary dance more broadly. My research identifies previously unexplored sources of influence upon these artists. This thesis presents a re-evaluation of established discourse by focusing on a foreign influence that has not been identified in current research as a common thread linking these three artists; while connections have been established between German and American early modern dance, the reciprocal influence of Western practice on Far Eastern performance is comparatively uncharted territory. In the second half of this thesis, I outline the response to this cross-cultural dialogue, focusing on the postmodern artistic practice of groups in Japan, Austria and Germany. Accordingly, this thesis deconstructs the notion of cultural isolation, arguing instead that, as a logical outcome of this inter-cultural exchange, dance in the postmodern era is informed by a legacy of universalised, ritualistic practice.

Abstract:
A deep visual analysis of Ludovico Carracci’s 1588 Madonna and Child, Angels, and Saints Francis, Dominic, Mary Magdalene and the Donor Cecilia Bargellini Boncompagni with an emphasis on the role of the patron, the significance of the locality, and the visual semiotics of the Virgin Mary’s gaze in prompting conversion in the repentant prostitutes of the Carmelite convertite convent associated with Ss. Filippo and Giacomo in Bologna, Italy. Including a commentary on contemporary social expectations of modest behavior and the painting’s deliberate incorporation of inappropriate female behavior towards a religious purpose. A discussion of uniquely Carmelite iconography, the use of Ignatian mental prayer in convents, and self-determination in imagery by a Bolognese aristocratic woman.

The dissertation wich the reader has in its hands concerns my master dissertation about the contemplation in the Cloud of Unknowing. The Cloud of Unknowing belongs to the late medieval period (XIV century), and was probably written by a cartusian monk, as a method of teaching a young man, probably around twenty-four years old, about the contemplative life. In his writing, the author compares the contemplative life to two important biblical figures. First he compares it to Mary, that having received Jesus in her house, listens to him patiently, unlike Martha, her sister, that goes about preparing his supper. Next the author compares contemplative life, to Moses, wich with a lot of effort, climbs to the top of the mountain and sees a great cloud. Mary´s passage reports to the gospel according to Luque chapter 10, verse 38-42. Moses passage belongs to the book of Exodus, chapter 24. Mary is compared to her sister Martha. The first one represents the contemplative life, while the second one represents an active life. Moses is compared to Aaron, the last one representing a person wich with little effort and by divine grace contemplates the lord, while the first one is only capable of the same with a lot of effort. We approach the degrees of ascension to the contemplative life: the purgative path; the progressive and the contemplative one. The first degree refers to the active life while the second one refers to the active and contemplative lifes. In its turn the third level relates only to the contemplative life. The active life, being the path lived according the works of mercy and charity, as well as contemplation. Is the search of the spirit becoming closer to God through silence, solitude and loving desire

Patellofemoral pain (DFP) is one of the most frequent dysfunctions in the knee, during functional activities such as crouching, climbing and descending stairs among others, reaching 25% of all knee injuries. Multifactorial etiology is associated with biomechanical disorders characterized by deficits in motor control of the trunk and lower limbs during activities in daily life. Thus, the objectives of this work are: 1 - To compare the kinematics of the trunk, pelvis, hip, knee, ankle and foot in women with patellofemoral pain and healthy women during gait; 2 - Compare the range of motion of trunk flexion, inclination and rotation, anteversion, pelvic obliquity and rotation, flexion / extension, abduction / adduction and internal / external rotation of the hip, flexion / extension and valgus / varus of the knee, dorsiflexion / plantar flexion and eversion / reversal of the hindfoot during initial contact, load response, and support phase between females with patellofemoral pain and healthy women during gait; 3 - Compare gait cycle time, cadence, velocity, simple support time, double support and step length between women with patellofemoral pain and healthy women during gait. A total of 270 women were evaluated, 129 in the control group (CG) and 141 in the patellofemoral pain group (PFD), all of them physically active, aged between 18 and 35 years. Compared with the asymptomatic group the cycle time and the percentage of simple support were higher in the PFD group, while the pitch length and velocity were smaller when compared to the healthy group. In the initial contact the control group presented external rotation of the hip and plantar flexion of the ankle, and the DFP internal rotation of the hip and ankle dorsiflexion. In the response the load increased internal hip rotation, greater ankle dorsiflexion, rearfoot eversion and greater angle of progression in external rotation of the DFP foot, compared to GC. The magnitude of the maximum value was greater for ankle dorsiflexion and for the angle of progression in external rotation of the DFP foot. There was more flexion of the trunk, less internal rotation of the hip and dorsiflexion of the ankle in the DFP for magnitude of minimum value. The range of motion in the support phase was greater for internal rotation of the hip in the group.
No contato inicial o grupo controle apresentou rotação externa do quadril e flexão plantar do tornozelo, e o DFP rotação interna do quadril e dorsiflexão do tornozelo.

Abstract:
In a distributed eLearning environment, the development of learning objects is a participative task. We consider learning objects as knowledge pieces, which are subject to the management processes of acquisition, delivery, creation and production. A multiple-tier architecture for participative knowledge production tasks is introduced, where knowledge-producing agents are arranged into knowledge domains or marts, and a distributed interaction protocol is used to consolidate knowledge that is produced in a mart. Knowledge consolidated in a given mart can be in turn negotiated in higher-level foreign marts. The proposed architecture and protocol are applied to coordinate the development of learning objects by a distributed group of authors.

Fishing Vessel LADY MARY sank on the morning of March 24, 2009, and this paper outlines the marine forensic analysis performed by the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation to determine the causal factors. The condition of the sunken vessel included significant damage to the vessel’s rudder, propeller and stern ramp, which was extensively documented by commercial divers and a Remotely Operated Vehicle. U.S. Navy divers recovered the vessel’s rudder, GPS units and computer. The evidence obtained from the sunken vessel was systematically evaluated in conjunction with other information obtained from the sole survivor of the casualty, the vessel’s Shore Manager, pre-casualty photographs, a shipyard drawing of the vessel, vessel tracking systems, and a computer modeled stability analysis. Based on the forensic analysis, a number of sinking scenarios were eliminated and a probable sequence of events surrounding the sinking of LADY MARY was developed.

Abstract:
Abstract Sustainable energy utilization on Mars is fundamental for the success of habitation on Mars. The two sustainable energy sources for In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) with the highest potential for implementation on Mars are solar and wind. Unfortunately, the former cannot provide a reliable continuous source of energy for multiple reasons. Accordingly, wind energy is presented as a viable solution, or as a strong potential complement to solar energy. The authors investigate different sites on Mars by evaluating the available wind resources to select the most feasible location in terms of energy yield and other critical habitability criteria. This work is conducted by applying the General Circulation Model (GCM) simulation, this particular analysis of wind harvesting feasibility on Mars will be studied by employing the Mars Climate Database (MCD) model. In addition, this novel research provides a systematic approach for future energy harvesting projects on Mars. Moreover, it evaluates different potential wind turbine design concepts applicable for the Martian ISRU. The results of this research lay the foundation for future energy utilization necessary for habitation to thrive, as well as it will be a key for future exploration missions. Ultimately, this will enrich our understanding of wind turbine systems.

Abstract:
A novel spacecraft, the Sample Collection for Investigation of Mars (SCIM), was proposed for the collection and return of atmospheric gas and dust samples from the martian atmosphere. The SCIM mission, part of NASA's Mars Exploration Strategy, would allow scientists to greatly enhance our understanding of Mars' water, climate, and geological evolution by studying the element and isotopic composition of the gas and dust. The SCIM spacecraft was proposed to collect its samples during a single high-speed pass through the martian atmosphere at an altitude of 37 km and return the samples back to earth. For the atmospheric gas sampling aspect the SCIM employs the Atmospheric Collection Experiment (ACE), a dual-component apparatus consisting of a passive and a cryogenic sorption gas collection system. Each of these systems possesses a collection vessel that is initially under high vacuum. At the time of entry into the martian atmosphere, valves on SCIM open and gas flows into the parallel-plumbed passive and cryogenic sorption gas collection systems. The passive system simply allows the incoming gas to fill an initially evacuated 1 Liter vessel. The cryogenic sorption system employs a Joule-Thompson cryocooler and sorption medium that initially condenses and captures the incoming gas. As the SCIM begins to exit the atmosphere isolation valves close and trap the gas samples in their collection systems for the return journey back to earth. The minimum SCIM mission goal was to collect 100 cm3 @STP(≈ 0.2 g) of martian atmospheric gas and the ACE was being designed to gather 1000 cm3 @STP (≈ 2.0 g) using both the passive and cryogenic systems. The volumes referred to above correspond to standard temperature and pressure on Earth (e.g., STP). The goals of this study were to prove the gas collection concepts mentioned above and develop the numerical and experimental tools to allow for the optimization of a flight worthy ACE. This paper discusses the design, analysis, and testing of a prototype ACE. First, more specific details on the design and testing methodology for the prototype are presented. Next, the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is discussed. Finally, empirical pressure data from the prototype tests are used to assess the performances of the passive and cryogenic sorption gas collection systems and are compared to numerical pressure predictions to provide a benchmark for the CFD model. Results indicate that the prototype ACE is capable of meeting the design goal of 1000 cm3 @STP (2.0 g) of total gas collection.

Abstract:
There are about 500 places marinas in Japan. In late years it is got close to many people as marine recreation space. However, there are problems in our country with many disasters because there is much damage such as a typhoon and high tide, a tsunami. This study is aimed at grasping the natural disaster damage, the regime situation. Therefore I performed a questionnaire and listening comprehension investigation for a marina. As a result, it is the present conditions that there is the anti-disaster measures manual which original, few marinas make. In addition, at the time of a disaster, a support system system on a fund side for the damage of a marina is not made clear. I will think that rebuilding of a system to manage, substantiality of a support system are necessary in future to make a marina good air space.

Abstract:
To help minimize risk of high sinkage and slippage during drives and to better understand soil properties and rover terramechanics from drive data, a multidisciplinary team was formed under the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) project to develop and utilize dynamic computer-based models for rover drives over realistic terrains. The resulting tool, named ARTEMIS (Adams-based Rover Terramechanics and Mobility Interaction Simulator), consists of the dynamic model, a library of terramechanics subroutines, and the high-resolution digital elevation maps of the Mars surface. A 200-element model of the rovers was developed and validated for drop tests before launch, using MSC-Adams dynamic modeling software. Newly modeled terrain-rover interactions include the rut-formation effect of deformable soils, using the classical Bekker-Wong implementation of compaction resistances and bull-dozing effects. The paper presents the details and implementation of the model with two case studies based on actual MER telemetry data. In its final form, ARTEMIS will be used in a predictive manner to assess terrain navigability and will become part of the overall effort in path planning and navigation for both Martian and lunar rovers.
