Jongjairuksa, Kulyanee. "A sociological approach to the translation of Chinese martial arts fiction into Thai." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2018. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/26168/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the fact that only a handful of Chinese martial arts novels have been translated into English, this genre of fiction has been extremely popular among Thai readers since 1957. Such novels occupy a space in the Thai literary field as a genre in its own right and continue to be popular at the present time. One aspect of this genre which makes it interesting to study is the unique hybrid style of the language that is used in the translations, and its pervasiveness in everyday Thai life. The martial arts language style is archaic with the hint of Chinese-ness, making it different from translations of other genres. Yet, despite the idiosyncratic nature of the language style, the genre has been well received in Thai society. The language style has also been adopted for use in other contexts, such as in political newspaper columns. Furthermore, it also has some influence on the language style of local literature written by Thai authors. In this study, I examine from a sociological perspective what lies behind the exceptional success of this translated literature in the target Thai society. Translation practice is looked at as a socially related activity and Bourdieu's sociology of cultural production serves as the key analytical device. The longstanding relations that pertain between China and Siam/Thailand, and the extensive immigration and assimilation of the Chinese into Siamese/Thai society that led to cultural hybridity between the two cultures, are the main factors that contribute to the acceptability of the language style and the success of such a culturally rich genre in a foreign country.

Salas, Leslie. "Mirrors and Vanities." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5697.

Full text
Abstract:
Mirrors and Vanities is a multi-modal collection which showcases the diversity of working in long and short storytelling forms. Featured in this thesis are fiction, nonfiction, graphic narrative, and screenplay. Using unconventional approaches to storytelling in order to achieve emotional resonance with the audience while maintaining high standards for craft, these stories and essays explore the costs inherent to the subtle nuances of interpersonal relationships. The fiction focuses on the complications of characters keeping secrets. A husband discovers the truth behind his wife's miscarriage. A girl visits her fiance in purgatory. A boy crosses a line and loses his best friend. Meanwhile, the nonfiction centers on self-discovery and gender roles associated with power struggles. A schizophrenic threatens to ruin my mother's wedding. I rediscover my relationship with my father through food writing. Sword-work teaches me to fail and succeed at making martial art. The title work of the thesis is a collaged story highlighting the tribulations of a physicist fixated on recovering his lost love by manipulating the multiverse. The multi-modal format implicates the nebulosity of physics theories and how different aspects of the narrative can be presented in various formats to best suit the nature of the storytelling. Through the interactions of characters in mundane and extraordinary circumstances, the works in this thesis examine the consequences of choice, the contrast between reality and expectation, coming of age, and the Truth of narrative.

Interpretations of the Politics of Fictive Landscapes in Context: A Comparison of Allan Sekula's Sketch on a Geography Lesson and Martha Rosler's In the Place of the Public Airport Series Throughout this thesis project I examine the geopolitical context(s) of the photographs featured in Martha Rosler's 'In the Place of the Public Airport Series' (1983) and Allan Sekula's series, 'Sketch on a Geography Lesson' (1982). I investigate the manner in which they question the legitimacy of the genre of documentary photography within the post-modern age by emphasizing the documentation of an actual physical place, presenting an alternative to the post-modern notion of photograph merely as another component of simulacra, or the intentional creation of an image without meaning or origin. By looking at photographs that Rosler and Sekula made during the burgeoning stages of post-modern theory, presents a broader interpretation of the development of Marxist documentary photography from the early 1980's to today. One way in which I dialogue with the discourse surrounding documentary photography in the 1980's is to focus on Rosler's and Sekula's intentional choice of material that emphasizes the political dialogue rather than concepts that are abstract and maintain no reference to real life. Furthermore, the period of the 1980's is considered a point in contemporary art history when the political fervor of the 1960's and early 1970's diminished greatly. Departing from this trend, Rosler's and Sekula's work continues to address political ideas throughout the 1980's, creating a bridge to today's photographers, such as Edward Burtynsky and Andreas Gursky who consider aesthetics from a socio-political perspective.

Martial Arts Fiction has been one of the most popular forms of literature in Chinese communities around the world for decades. However this genre remains relatively unknown to the English-speaking world due to lack of translations. Complicated cultural and genre specific terms present a great challenge to translating said genre into English. Through this paper I present a guide to translating martial arts fiction through analysis of genre specific terms as found in existing English translations in addition to producing my own sample translation of famed martial arts fiction writer Gu Long’s (古龍) Chu Liuxiang Chuanqi zhi Xiehai Piaoxiang 《楚留香傳奇之血海飄香》.
