<p>This is a report covering the 5<sup>th</sup> Annual Martial Arts Studies Conference, held in Orange, California (USA) on May 23-24, 2019. This chapter examines contemporary academic and popular media conceptualizations of masculinity in relation to ‘hardness’. It stages this through a close reading of a recent documentary called ‘Hard Men’, which focuses on working-class masculinity. It then examines recent claims of connections between MMA practice and fascist ideologies. The chapter ultimately argues that an analysis of the formation or invention of political identities is a crucial task for media, cultural, and martial arts studies—a task that requires attention not just to local, physical, embodied, or ‘concrete’ contexts and practices ‘proper’, but that also involves analyses that take seriously the places and functions of transnational media culture, and the ways that subjects and objects of discourse and of study across all manner of media, medium, and cultural text and context are portrayed.

This book challenges the cultural memory of the African American Freedom Struggle era that hinges on a master narrative focused on the “heroic period” of the Civil Rights Movement. It argues that this narrative limits the representation of African American identity within the Civil Rights Movement to Martin Luther King's nonviolent protest leadership in the segregated South and casts Malcolm X's advocacy of black nationalism and the ensuing Black Power/Arts Movement as undermining civil rights advances. Through an analysis of five case studies of African American identity staged in plays between 1959 and 1969, the book instead offers representations that engage, critique, and revise racial uplift ideology and reimagine the Black Arts Movement's sometimes proscriptive notions of black authenticity as a condition of black identity and cultural production. It also posits a postblack ethos as the means by which these representations construct their counternarratives to cultural memory and broadens narrow constructions of African American identity shaping racial discourse in the U.S. public sphere of the 1960s.

Some filmmakers or artists decide to put art at the heart of their creation, applying not only the relationship between cinema and art to their concept but also to various aspects of the process of creation. Miriam De Rosa addresses this kind of “art contemporary turn” by examining the different incursions of cinema from the point of view of the contemporary art space: “how the contemporary experience of moving images is articulated when it enters art spaces.” The presence of film in this foreign space, transforming it into a different and personalized place, can be observed in recent exhibitions: Sleepwalkers (2007); Marta Minujín’s Mesunda Reloaded (2019) at the New Museum in New York; and Sensitive Environments by the Milan-based collective Studio Azzurro.
