This article presents an attempt to consider the formation of the “Martian” text in Russian literature during the Silver Age. The author studies three novels about trips to Mars (On Another Planet by P. Infantiev, On a Neighboring Planet by V. Kryzhanovskaya, Red Star by A. Bogdanov) published in Russia from 1901 to 1908. The aim of the study is to identify the main stable elements of the structure that appeared in all the three novels. The author employs methods of comparative historical analysis. Abstract Crossing the binary of utopia and dystopia, this article reads Hao Jingfang's (1984–) novel Vagabonds as a critical ecotopia. I explore configurations of social worlds and eschew the politics of purity by highlighting the complexities of building a utopia while navigating entangled complicity and ambiguity between utopia and dystopia. The Mars Republic in the novel represents an ecotopia built through advanced technologies, where Martians adapt to the arid environment in contrast with the environmentally degraded earth. Abstract This article elaborates on two depictions of Mars in Stanisław Lem's fiction, represented in Człowiek z Marsa [The Man from Mars, 1946] and “Ananke” (1971), focusing on the ties to literary tradition and contemporary scientific findings, which helps explain otherwise inexplicable features of the stories. In regard to The Man from Mars, the analysis reveals why Lem has decided to depart from the original evolutionary scenario envisioned by H. G. Wells for his Martians (with The War of the Worlds remaining the sole identifiable inspiration behind Lem's debut). Examination of the influen

Influenced by Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution, Wells presents a conflict between organic beings, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, highlighting the fragility of life and the ecosystems that sustain it. Dialogues of this kind were already part of science fiction by the mid-1930s, and an analysis of Stanley G. Weinbaum’s “A Martian Odyssey” (1934) demonstrates how nuanced they could be. This paper analyses the construction of fictional interaction in humorous narratives written by children of 8, 10 and 12 years of age, as compiled in the CHILDHUM corpus. These informants were asked to write a humorous story about an imaginary school exchange program with Mars. The analysis will explore the ways in which children shape their fictional conversational interactions with Martians, and how the data that arise can be correlated with the psychosocial and metalinguistic maturation of the children. This preliminary qualitative study reveals that children aged 8 demonstrate a certain de

This article is concerned with the study of the role of contaminated speech in revealing the relationship between the characters of a work of fiction. The material used for the study is the works of Jack London — “Martin Eden” (1909) and “The Scarlet Plague” (1910). The concept of norm was introduced as the main premise for the study, which was interpreted differently by the participants of the dialogue. In the course of the research, two communicative models associated with different levels of education of the communicants were identified — the dialogue-argument and the dialogue-explanation.
