Abstract:
AbstractThe Martin and Morris Music Studio (MMMS) imprint permeated the first fifty years of black gospel music. Jointly owned by singer/impresaria Sallie Martin (1895/6–1988) and composer/arranger/pianist/organist Kenneth Morris (1917–88), the MMMS delivered gospel songs to an eager public and offered ordinary Americans the chance to see their names in print as author or composer on the cover of a gospel octavo, copies of which could then be sold to benefit that same ordinary American. Their influence extended far beyond that service, however. Martin and her Singers performed and popularized music bearing the MMMS imprint in venues ranging from small churches in the Deep South to national conventions in Washington, D.C., and widened circulation of MMMS music via Los Angeles recording studios. The unprecedented accomplishments of the MMMS, active from 1940 to 1993, have not been fully explored. Relying on transcribed interviews of the owners by Bernice Johnson Reagon, James Standifer, and others, accounts in historical newspapers, and company archives, this article addresses that void. The centrality of the MMMS in twentieth-century gospel of all types is clarified through examination of contexts for black-owned music publishing in the last century, the owners’ early business models, and their changing roles in the creation, publication, popularization, and dissemination of gospel music for more than fifty years.

Abstract:
The young Martin Low embarked on research just as an influential review of biological membrane structure opened by stating that ‘Biological membranes play a crucial role in almost all cellular phenomena, yet our understanding of the molecular organization of membranes is still rudimentary’ ( Singer & Nicholson 1972 Science 175 , 720–731 ( doi:10.1126/science.175.4023.720 )). Much of this ignorance was dispelled during the next couple of decades, the period during which he played a central role in establishing that many proteins on the surfaces of eukaryotic cells are moored there by membrane-embedded anchors consisting of glycosylated inositol phospholipids (known as GPI anchors). Martin started this work in Birmingham, UK, and then moved to the USA, working mainly in Ithaca, Oklahoma City and New York. During the latter period he became the focal person of this emerging research community. He provided reagents for and collaborated with a remarkable number of geographically scattered biochemists, immunologists and geneticists, and it was through him that most of the new information flowed. His generosity, modesty and scientific integrity were essential for the speedy maturation of this research area during the 1980s. Tragically, his work was cut short by early-onset Alzheimer's disease, and he retired prematurely in 2008. He died in 2013 at the appallingly young age of 63.

Abstract:
Some readers may have seen the re-runs, on BBC-TV recently, of the ‘Face to Face’ interviews done by John Freeman in the 1960s. One of these was with the singer Adam Faith, then a startlingly beautiful young man with the grace to be amazed at being chosen to be sandwiched between Martin Luther King and (if I remember aright) J. K. Galbraith. The re-runs were accompanied, where possible, with a further interview with the same person. What I found almost as startling as his lost beauty was Faith's referring to himself-when-young in the third person. After watching the rerun interview, the now middle-aged man commented to Freeman, on several occasions, that ‘He said such-and-such’, ‘He told you so-and-so’, and the like.

Abstract:
Classically trained vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and 2017 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Rhiannon Giddens has in recent years enjoyed increased visibility in the contemporary country music world. In 2016, she was a featured singer on Eric Church's top-ten country hit, “Kill a Word,” and she won the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass that same year. Giddens also had a recurring role as social worker Hanna Lee “Hallie” Jordan on the long-running musical drama Nashville in 2017 and 2018. While Giddens now enjoys a certain degree of acceptance in the country music world, she has not always felt included in the various largely white, contemporary American roots scenes. As such, she continues to speak out to audiences and the press about the erasure of African Americans from histories of string music, bluegrass, country, and other styles and forms of American roots music. Using Giddens's 2017 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) keynote, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops' music video for the song “Country Girl” from 2012's Leaving Eden, I demonstrate that Giddens effectively reclaims American old-time string music and country culture as black, subverting historically inaccurate racialized notions of country music authenticity.

Abstract:
This thesis explores Hogg's interpretation of indeterminacy both throughout his career and in Justified Sinner, especially in the character Gil-Martin. Hogg seems to reject the tradition of choosing one side over another in such a dichotomy, and instead chooses to look at both extremes as equally co-present. Hogg wrote Justified Sinner within the framework of the literary Gothic tradition and used Gothic tropes to create ambiguity throughout his novel, as is the case throughout his body of works. Many of the ambiguities in Justified Sinner center on the character Gil-Martin. My interpretation of Gil-Martin's ambiguity complicates the traditional scholarship on Justified Sinner.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mid-core shroud weld (H4 weld) at a BWR plant was inspected during refueling outages in 1998 (RF06) and 2000 (RF07). A structural margin evaluation considering 2000 inspection results for this weld provided technical justification for continued operation to at least the fuel cycle ending in 2002. IGSCC mitigation measures were implemented during operation through 2002. Therefore, a factor of two improvement in the assumed crack growth rate in the depth direction has been applied for operation between 2002 and 2004. The objectives of this paper are to describe the structural evaluation methodology used and describe the results of the evaluation in support of continued operation of H4 weld to 2004. Structural margins for continued operation of H4 weld to 2004 were evaluated two ways. First, the limit load calculations were conducted for a configuration in which through-wall flaws were assumed in regions where the ID surface fluence in 2004 exceeded 3×1020 n/cm2. Since all of the areas taken credit for had a fluence less than the threshold value of 3×1020 n/cm2, a limit load evaluation constituted a complete structural margin evaluation and no linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) or elastic plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) evaluations were necessary. Secondly, LEFM and EPFM calculations were conducted for the assumed configuration in which through-wall cracking was assumed where the ID surface fluence exceeded 5×1020 n/cm2. The calculated safety factor for the nominal case was determined to be 4.98, which exceeds the required value of 2.77. To demonstrate structural margin in the LEFM regime, a configuration similar to the limit load nominal case was used except that through-wall cracking was assumed in regions where ID fluence exceeded 5×1020 n/cm2 instead of 3×1020 n/cm2. The calculated value of the highest stress intensity factor was 49.2 ksi√in that is less than the allowable value of 54.2 ksi√in. Additional evaluation with EPFM was also conducted to demonstrate higher available structural margins. The EPFM evaluation was conducted by first determining an equivalent single through-wall flaw to conservatively model the LEFM configuration. The applied J-integral values were calculated using the EPRI ductile fracture handbook. A conservative material J-T curve corresponding to a fluence level of 5×1020 n/cm2 was used in the evaluation. The EPFM evaluation showed the structural margin for this case to be 4.0, which exceeds the required value of 2.77. Based on the results of these limit load, LEFM and EPFM structural margin evaluations, it was concluded that the required structural margins will be maintained at the H4 weld for operation through year 2004.

Full text
Abstract:
The proving test of a large-scale piping system and elasto-plastic analyses were conducted to assure safety margins of current and newly proposed seismic design codes for piping in Japanese nuclear power plants. Two test models were used, one for the design method confirmation test and one for the ultimate strength test. The allowable acceleration safety margin (MA) was defined as the ratio of Af/AS2, where Af is the maximum input acceleration corresponding to piping failure in a single seismic input, and AS2 is the maximum allowable input acceleration for the S2 seismic wave according to Japanese seismic design codes for Class 1 piping components. When the current code was applied to the design method confirmation test model, associated with the 10% broadened response spectrum of the S2 seismic wave for a PWR building, MA was revealed to be 9.6 for a frequency ratio (RW) of 0.7. Without the response spectrum broadening, MA decreases to 4.9. Redefined as the ratio in terms of the displacement and cyclic peak stress of the highest stressed component, the safety margins (MD, MFC) tend to change to 7.7 and 3.7, respectively. The newly proposed code includes the following modifications from the current code rules: 1) only the allowable stress limits to prevent fatigue failure is ruled for the “S2” seismic wave, 2) a new diagram of the Ke factor in the fatigue design analysis is implemented. The safety margin MA of the proposed code with the broadened spectrum was revealed to be still as high as 6.6 for RW = 0.7. Analytical evaluation was conducted to discuss the tendency of the safety margins for seismic input conditions that differ from RW = 0.7, and the degree of conservatism or margin included in design analysis methods, whose degree is related to the safety margins.

Full text
Abstract:
New 2012 edition of JSME code for design and construction of fast reactors (FRs code) was published by Japan society of mechanical engineers (JSME). Main topic of the current JSME FRs code 2012 edition is registration of the two new materials, 316FR and Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel. Besides the allowable strength values and material properties were standardized for the registration, the design margins for the new materials to the rules for the components and piping serviced at elevated temperature described in the JSME FRs code were assessed. To confirm the design margins, a series of the assessment program for the new materials to the conventional design rules was performed using the evaluation of the experimental data and finite element analysis. Namely, the design margin including the evaluation procedure of creep-fatigue damage, strain range and the others were assessed based on the background concept of the conventional JSME FRs code. Since a number of the evaluation procedures described in the JSME FRs code were investigated, a several topical assessments of these are reported in this paper. Besides the assessed results of the evaluation of the accumulated creep-fatigue damage and enhanced creep strain are reported, the assessments results of the design margin including the concept of the elastic follow-up originally applied in the JSME FRs code were covered in this paper. Through these assessments, the enough design margins for new materials to the rules were confirmed.

A top-level safety requirement for aircraft is that the probability of structural failure, resulting in the loss of aircraft, shall be less than 1 × 10−7 per flight hour. A reasonable approach to justify fatigue scatter factors is to derive them from this top-level safety requirement. The minimum scatter factor that can be justified using Weibull analysis is a function of the material data and stress level. Typical results at realistic stress levels range from 8 to 16 lifetime analytical margin to the characteristic life of the S-N data set. Weibull analysis results demonstrate that a 4-life time test provides high probability of detecting a design margin shortfall. Scatter Factors are also derived for design loads and life tracking loads. The analysis discussion addresses single-point-failure safety critical structure; however, a Weibull based probability analysis for multiple-load-path structure with dependent failure mechanisms is also included. Graphical and statistical proofs justify the material scatter factors. The F-22 program uses Weibull based probability analysis for design margins, testing, certification and life management. We call the risk based scatter factor approach High Durability Margin Analysis (HDMA).

Abstract:
Cores loaded with a mixture of fuel types are known to reduce stability margins. Mixed fuel cores have become more common as utilities change fuel suppliers, or when fuel vendors upgrade their fuel designs to take advantage of improved thermal and mechanical margins. This paper studies some of the physical processes that reduce the stability of mixed cores. A number of runs have been performed using the LAPUR6 stability code to evaluate the effect on mixed cores on the stability of a typical BWR. To this end, two fuel types have been set up with two different single-phase to two-phase pressure drop ratios by artificially adjusting the spacer and inlet orifice friction coefficients. The flow and pressure drop characteristics of both fuels have been matched at full flow, full power conditions. All manufacturers match the pressure drop of new fuels so that the flow distributions among the new and old fuel elements operating at the same power are approximately constant. The critical power ratio and thermo-mechanical criteria are typically limiting at full power; therefore matching the flow performance at full power maximizes the margin to these criteria. Stability is of concern at low flows, especially at natural circulation, where the thermal-hydraulic conditions are significantly different from full flow and power. Our simulations show that even if two fuel elements are perfectly matched at full flow, the axial void fraction distribution changes significantly when the flow is reduced to natural circulation conditions and the two fuel elements are not fully thermal-hydraulically compatible at the reduced flows. Basically, the two fuel types set up two separate natural circulation lines, and one of the fuel types essentially starves the other from flow. Since stability has such a strong dependence with channel flow, the reactor stability is controlled by the fuel type that has the smaller flow at natural circulation. A counterintuitive result of this study shows that, in general, loading a more stable fuel type into a mixed core has the opposite effect, and the stability margin of that mixed core is lower until the new, more stable fuel becomes dominant. Because of the burnable Gadolinium in most modern BWR fuels, the highest reactivity fuel elements are the once-burned. Loading a more stable fuel type starves the flow of the high-reactivity older fuel, reducing the stability margin.

Abstract:
While time delays typically lead to poor control performance, and even instability, previous research has shown that introduction of time delays in controlling a dynamic system can, in some cases, be beneficial. This paper presents a new benefit of time delay control for single-input single-output linear time invariant systems: it can be used to improve robustness, as measured by increased stability margins. The proposed method utilizes time delays to approximate state-derivative feedback, which can be used, together with state feedback, to reduce sensitivity and improve robustness. Additional sensors are not required since the state-derivatives are approximated using available measurements and time delays. The method is introduced using a scalar example, then applied to a single degree-of-freedom mechanical vibration control problem in simulations to demonstrate excellent performance with improved stability margins.

Abstract:
[Extract from Executive Summary] The collection of additional data to facilitate fisheries management has been identified as a priority at the national level via the Scottish Inshore Fisheries Strategy, and at the local level in the management plans of Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups. Data collection implemented by industry offers a potentially cost effective means by which to provide additional information to enhance current stock assessment programmes, and to produce empirical indicators to inform fisheries management. The fundamental driver for data collection should be the purpose for which it is required; however, the regionalisation of fisheries management and increased, and often competing, demands, on our marine space mean that there are many potential uses for industry derived data. This report presents the findings of a single work package in the wider prototypic Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data System (SIFIDS) project; looking at ways in which inshore fisheries data collection can be improved on. The propose of this work package was to review and evaluate current inshore (shellfish) fisheries data collection and stock assessments in order to determine where it might be possible for industry derived data collection to provide a positive contribution. For the purposes of this work package the focus was limited to brown crab, lobsters, and scallops.
