Abstract:
This chapter examines the roles played by Thomas A. Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson, Sallie Martin, Theodore R. Frye, and Magnolia Lewis Butts in the development of gospel music in Chicago. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Dorsey, Jackson, Martin, Frye, and Butts formed an informal nexus that spread the new gospel songs and gospel music style throughout Chicago and, ultimately, across the country. Dorsey was a versatile pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader who helped incorporate jazz and blues styles into gospel. He met Jackson around 1928 and offered her to demonstrate his songs. Martin, another Dorsey acquaintance, helped the struggling songwriter reap the financial and adulatory benefits of gospel music. This chapter provides a background on Dorsey, Jackson, Martin, Frye, and Butts and how they got involved in gospel music in Chicago. It also discusses the 1930 National Baptist Convention, the tipping point for Dorsey's gospel songwriting career as well as the commencement of a gradual acceptance of gospel music by African American churches.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses some important developments that enabled gospel music gain a greater foothold in Chicago during the 1940s. Migration from the South continued unabated into the 1940s, leading to increased membership in church congregations. In addition, gospel singers and musicians were popping up on the South and West Sides. This chapter first examines the contributions of the First Church of Deliverance and its stable of soloists, including Myrtle Jackson, Edna Mae Quarles, Elizabeth Hall, and R. L. Knowles, to Chicago gospel music. It then looks at “song battles” between two or more gospel quartets, groups, or singers, along with the First Church of Deliverance's Candle Lighting Service and Gospel Music Festival. It also provides a background on Mahalia Jackson's reputation and career as a gospel singer before concluding with an assessment of three popular Chicago-based gospel groups that plied their singing trade during and immediately after the war years: the Roberta Martin Singers, the Lux Singers, and the Gay Sisters.

Abstract:
Jewish Literature: A Very Short Introduction explores modern Jewish literature from 1492 to the early twenty-first century, rotating around the concept of aterritoriality to appreciate the diasporic journey Jews have embarked on across geographic and linguistic spheres to the present day. At the center are canonical figures like Franz Kafka, Isaac Babel, Bruno Schulz, Anne Frank, Martin Buber, Hannah Arendt, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Saul Bellow, Philip Roth, Grace Paley, Jacobo Timerman, Moacyr Scliar, and Susan Sontag. Unlike the output of other national literatures, Jewish literature does not have a fixed address. As a result, its practitioners are at once insiders and outsiders.
