Abstract:
This work proposes a reflection on aspects of the production of space involved in the modernization and urbanization of Martinique, from the second half of the twentieth century. Compounding the French overseas since 1946, on condition that department, this Caribbean island has since then an extensive process of modernization and urbanization that deeply touches everyday life. Although often presented and understood from the perspective of the benefit and the rights, this situation causes discomfort and generates critical towards a cultural imposition and a continuity of colonial domination. Under a critical development and contradictory process of modernization and urbanization of the island beckons with the idea and progress and improvement of living conditions, but revealed an illusion of access to the city, right to the city and citizenship, which will be reduced to concept of the right to consumer, and even in this context are held precariously.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at analyzing relatively the spaces in two literary works Luuanda, by Luandino Vieira whose native language is Portuguese and Texaco by Patrick Chamoiseau whose native language is French. It is assumed that the narrative protagonists are the spaces, as it can be initially observed in the titles. These spaces are the Luanda musseques and the Martinican slums, which is considered a district called Texaco. They comprise the time, narrators, characters and plot. What is more they comprise a literary language that subvert the dominant languages, which are Portuguese and French incorporating the dominated ones, which are the Angolan Kimbunder and the Martinican Creole. Therefore it is possible to understand from the analysed spaces in these narratives that the official history is contested and rewritten by the authors, highlighting the people who has never ceased struggling against the invasions, domination, assimilation and who have been bravely surviving. Thus it was verified that the way people survived in the narratives occurred not only through the occupation and subversion of the spaces, but also the subversive narrative.

Abstract:
Soils elements stocks, and particularly those of carbon, are in constant evolution under natural factors effect (climate, vegetation, clays content, etc) and anthropic factors effect (soils uses, etc). Our objective is thus, (i) to better understand the relations between soil, farming system and stored carbon quantity, (ii) to study the consequences of soils uses changes and of soils managements changes on organic matter shapes in soil and (iii) to specify organic matter role on soil properties physics.Representative agri-pedological situations of the three great mineralogical models of tropical soils (allophonic soils (not crystallized clays), 1:1 clay soils and 2:1 clay soils) and presenting agricultural systems of various levels of intensification (intensive monocultures intended for export, slightly intensified farming systems, etc) were thus selected in the soils of Martinique. In addition, to limit the effects of their former uses, we generally chose to the minimum 3 years old farming situations. The analysis of the various lands carbon stocks reveals different behaviors: in allophonic soils, a correlation exists between carbon content (or organic stock) and texture (or fine elements content), as well for not cultivated as for cultivated situations. Variations ranges (reduction) of carbon stocks observed under various management soils systems effect, also depends on texture: in sandy soils, carbon sequestration potentiality is low or null, on the other hand, carbon storage potentialities are higher in clay soils. The estimation of total carbon stocks on the scale of Martinique, for one meter of depth and for and average situation between the use soils charts of 1969/70 and 1979/80, rises to 11,859 Mt of C calculated for 95,8% of the surface.Soil organic matter distribution varies with soil texture: in sandy soils, with low contents of organic matter, organics matters are mainly associated with the sandy fractions; in clay soils, richer in organic matters, 50 to 60% of the organic matters are associated with the argillaceous fraction. In the same way, the organic matter dynamics also depends on soil texture: in sandy soils, organic stocks variations are primarily due to carbon loss or accumulation of the sandy fraction; in clay soils, the argillaceous fraction takes part in a dominating way in organic stocks variations of these soils at the time of their setting in culture or meadow; the sand-clay soils have an intermediate behavior between these two poles.Structural stability varies with mineralogy. Andosols (or ALL) present a high degree of aggregation and stability, due to the presence of allophones and their particular association with the organics compounds. In crystallized clay soils, aggregation stability is higher in 1:1 clay soils (or LAC); the lowest values are generally observed in the lands on 2:1 clay soils (or HAC). Moreover, culture setting generally results in aggregation stability reduction.Cultures intensification (frequent ploughings, low organic matter restitutions to the soil, etc) accentuates aggregation stability loss caused by culture setting, particularly in lands on 2:1 clay soils (or HAC)

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is the first comprehensive work on Martinican women’s literature. I demonstrate that Martinican women authors have been just as prolific as their male counterparts and have increasingly contributed significant social criticism from a specifically female perspective. The aim is to rectify the imbalance in the attention given to women writers from Guadeloupe and those from Martinique, and to remedy the disproportion of critical studies dedicated to male Martinican writers compared to those by their female counterparts. The thesis provides a general overview of Martinican women authors and focuses on Nicole Cage-Florentiny, Suzanne Dracius, Fabienne Kanor, Marie Flore-Pelage and Audrey Pulvar in particular. These five authors belong to a generation of writers who are less concerned with revolutionary and ideological manifestos, but with the specific problems with which women are confronted on a daily basis. What is thereby generated is a canon of Martinican women’s literature, or French Antillean literature more generally, that can be situated in its own context, rather than assimilated into African-American, Third-World or Francophone African literary canons. They break silences on taboo subjects, putting into the forefront rape, incest, madness, miscegenation, silencing, exile, dysfunctional relationships and lesbianism, and present distinctively female experiences of racism, sexism, and class elitism. My analysis shows these authors establish new forms of resistance against patriarch oppression, not only in their approaches to representing women’s subjugation, but also in how they appropriate, subvert, and reject available Western literary techniques. They situate the root of their society’s problems in the time of slavery and colonialism, and insist that changes need to be made today, thereby incorporating an awareness of their past yet maintaining a new and all-inclusive femi-humanism. Their female aesthetic and shift away from male-centred beliefs, portrayals and stereotypes and towards a new understanding of the position of women as mothers, sisters, wives, lovers, and as authors of their own subjectivities, is a much-needed component in a complete and critical literary representation of Martinican society.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Orthographic processes that take place during visual recognition of letter sequences can be dissociated into three different stages activated in an interactive and parallel manner: visual feature analysis, letter processing and letter sequence processing. In order to define which processing stages are influenced by respectively lexical knowledge (lexical “Top-down” effects) and the load of attention required by a task (attentional “Top-down” effects), we performed two ERP studies comparing fluent readers and dyslexic adults. For both subject groups, visual feature analysis of letter sequences (P1 peak) was influenced by gaze position in the sequence, but was independent of other factors, namely display duration, lexical and attentional “Top-down” effects. The letter processing (N1 peak) as well as the letter sequence processing (left-lateralized negative peak) were influenced by both "Bottom-up" effects (display duration and gaze position), and lexical and attentional "Top-down" effects; moreover interactions between these factors were observed. Results from dyslexic subjects differed from controls at both letter and letter sequence stages. They also differ in the "Top-down" effects that influenced these stages. Finally, these results suggest that these reading processes were automated in fluent readers but not in dyslexic subjects

Abstract:

Martina Haag’s method of self-mockery used in her chronicles is characterized by her wish to live up to various ideals. This essay brings out the subversive power of self-deprecatory hu-mor expressed in her book Hemma hos Martina. The author’s strategies and kinds of humor are being studied, leading up to what this humor accomplishes. General theories on humor, by Mary Ann Rishel, Maria Ohlsson, Henri Bergson, Joannne R. Gilbert and Simon Critchley are being applied to find the essence of her craftsmanship in writing comedy. The analysis also goes more closely into the style and language, to give a deeper understanding of how she creates jokes, and also how she relates to her ideals through language. The main thrust of the analysis, though, builds on theories on self-deprecatory humor. Haag is included into Joanne R. Gilbert’s theory on self-deprecation and The Whiner within the field of stand-up comedy.

Some American feminist critics have rejected self-deprecatory humor as being anti-feminist, stating that women applying this particular kind of humor merely reinforce stereoty-pes, and put themselves down. This paper objects to those critics, leaning on Haag’s book. I wish to show that Haag is not demeaning towards herself, but towards the cultural norms and expectations in our present society. In this context, I show how Haag manages to demystify and criticize ideal representations of women, by lampooning them and revolting against them. In this way, her book turns into a satirical critique of cultural values. My essay illustrates how Haag objectifies herself, making regular use of stereotypes. This is necessary, since these two elements are essential to most humor. Haag confirms stereotypes to make people laugh. This laughter brings about awareness in the reader, making Haag’s work a social critique of current values and norms concerning women.

Abstract:
Myelofibrosis (MF) is a clonal disorders of hematopoietic stem cell. Mutations in 3 genes (JAK2, CALR, MPL) and chronic inflammation are the hallmark of MF. Infectious complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Ruxolitinib (RUX) therapy, a JAK1/2 inhibitor, suppresses both clonal myeloproliferation and release of proinflammatory cytokines, exerting also immunosuppressive activity. The main aim of my PhD project was the functional characterization of the immune/inflammatory microenvironment of MF. Specifically, we aimed: 1) to analyse the role of circulating microvesicles as disease biomarker in MF; 2) to investigate the phenotype/function of circulating monocytes in the inflammatory microenvironment of MF patients and to evaluate whether RUX may influence their behaviour. Focusing on circulating microvesicles, we demonstrated that: 1) the circulating megakaryocyte/platelet-derived microvesicles profile is altered; 2) according to IPSS score, Intermediate 2/high risk patients show respectively reduced/increased megakaryocyte/platelet-microvesicles proportion as compared with the intermediate1/low risk patients; 3) at baseline spleen-responders patients show a significantly increased megakaryocyte-microvesicles proportion as compared with the non-responder counterparts. Importantly, a cut-off value below 19.95% of megakaryocyte-microvesicles predicted RUX response. Interestingly, RUX therapy restores the normal megakaryocyte/platelet-microvesicles profile in spleen-responders patients only. On this basis, circulating megakaryocyte/platelet-microvesicles could have a diagnostic and prognostic role in MF. Finally, focusing on the immune microenvironment of JAK2V617F mutated MF patients, circulating monocytes show an altered activation/differentiation program and a reduced in vitro capacity to produce/secrete inflammatory cytokines in response to an infectious stimulus. Importantly, RUX therapy improves intracellular pro-inflammatory cytokines production of MF-monocytes and promotes the in vitro release of inflammatory cytokines associated with monocytes-derived microvesicles in response to an infectious stimulus. These findings contribute to better understand the immune biology in the setting of the MF and refines the biological effects of RUX.

Abstract:
Martina Wied is one of those authors who, although once well-known and highly regarded, have now been forgotten, even in their own home countries. Although Wied was joint winner in 1924 of the 'Forderungspreis der Stadt Wein' along with Robert Musil, Otto Stoessl, and Richard Billinger, her name appears in few of the reference books on the literature of the twentieth century. Her fall from prominence is largely due to the fact that she left the Austrian literary scene in 1939, just when she was gaining a reputation for her poetry, plays, essays, reviews, features, and novels and spent almost ten years in exile unable to publish until after her return. Martina Wied was in her late fifties when she emigrated and therefore found it difficult to adapt to a new life, to a new way of earning her living, to a change of language, to mixing with people of a different social and intellectual class. From being a person of standing in Austria, one who had met and worked with many of the great writers of her time, Wied became anonymous, forced to earn her living by teaching instead of by creative work, a change of status she felt keenly. Like many other exiled writers, she found if difficult to maintain her creative energies under such constant tension. In spite of homesickness, loneliness, poverty, and having to move from place to place, she managed to write some poetry, two Novellen and a novel, as well as finishing a long Entwicklungsroman which she begun in 1928. Although it was not easy on her return to re-establish herself in the literary world Wied received recognition for her life's work on the occasion of her seventieth birthday in 1952 as the first women to be awarded the 'Osterreichische Staatspreis fur Literatur'.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine a philosophical basis for the biohacker movement. The paper discommends the dominating narrative of the movement, which portraits it as being exclusively motivated by scientific progress. In contrast, I argue that the biohacking phenomenon, besides scientific discoveries, has social, cultural and above all religious incentives. The hypothesis is that the concept of biohacking cannot be fully understood within the bounds of a modern scientific discourse.  The proposed narrative is put into practice via a comparison between the biohacking community and eighteenth-century mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. The comparison is established by this paper; Swedenborg is not recognized by biohackers at large. By associating Swedenborg with the phenomenon, I intend to present a tangible example that the questions raised by the biohackers outdates the scientific discoveries that is normally regarded as their primordial cause. By way of the parallel, the paper aims to highlight a structure of reasoning that would not be as protruding if the movement was to be examined on its own. The comparison centers around how Swedenborg and the biohacker community uses metaphors to depict new and presumably better ways of being human. Their usage of the figure puts the traditional Lakoffian understanding to question. With this paper I explore the possibility of the metaphor shaping not only their understanding of the world, but also their understanding of the human condition. By examining how the rhetorical device is used by both traditions respectively, I intend to bring to light how they dissolve the border between man and the concept of god.

Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection caused by species of the complex Cryptococcus neoformans (C. neoformans and C. gattii) with high incidence in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Antifungal drugs used in therapy of this infection are scarce and, in addition, have evident toxicity and low effectiveness, which motivates the search for new candidates to antifungals. Essential oils (EOs) extracted from the fruit of Litsea cubeba (Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers.) and leaves of Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini (Roxb.) Will. Watson) and its major constituents, citral and geraniol, were investigated as antifungal sources. The aims of this work were to determine the isolated or associated antifungal activity of EOs and major constituents with amphotericin B (AMB) or fluconazole (FLU) on 15 isolates and two standard strains of C. neoformans complex, evaluate the time-kill curve, the action on the biosynthesis of ergosterol and on cell membrane, in addition to verify the cytotoxicity of EOs and major constituents on human erythrocytes. By in vitro susceptibility testing and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC), the best activities were to L. cubeba and citral. The EOs and major constituents exhibited minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) between 16 and 512 μg/mL and 64 and 2048 μg/mL, with a MIC90 of 128 μg/mL for L. cubeba and citral, and 512 μg/mL for C. martini and geraniol. To evaluate the association of EOs and major constituents with antifungal agents was performed the Chequerboard method, that showed indifference in the association of AMB and L. cubeba (94.1%) or citral (70.6%). In association with FLU, L. cubeba was antagonistic (76.5%) and indifferent (94%) for citral. C. martini and geraniol showed synergism associated with AMB, respectively, in 52.9 and 70.6% of isolates, and showed indifference when associated with the FLU in 64.7% and 88.2%. C. gattii 24065 time-kill curve under the action of EOs and major constituents showed a rapid fungicidal activity, which occurred after one hour incubation for L. cubeba, C. martini and geraniol, and after two hours for citral. The amount of ergosterol was quantified after contact with the EOs and major constituents and showed that L. cubeba and citral inhibited 100% of sterol biosynthesis in MIC and 64% for C. martini. This is the probably mechanism of action of these agents, except for geraniol, which reduced only 12% in MIC. The major compounds of EOs showed no ability to injure the plasma membrane of C. gattii, since an average of 2.7% propidium iodide labeled cells were detected by flow cytometry. The in vitro cytotoxicity assay by hemolysis showed that EOs and major constituents were not toxic in the MIC and MFCs. Taken together, our results showed that the EOs of L. cubeba and C. martini and their major constituents, citral e geraniol are promising as candidates for new antifungal agents.
Will.

Abstract:
Who tells the true story of the world? The western civilisation is highly influenced by the written word. The writings of ancient philosophers, poets and religious authorities still have a strong cultural impact. Myths and religion as well as philosophical and political systems effects our self-concept. These models are all unified by there ambition to explain mankind and tell the story of reality. This essay examines two published diaries in order to discuss their relation to the common story of the world. The objects of the study are Feberboken, by Stina Aronson (written in 1934) and Allt, by Martina Lowden (written in 2006). The diary is a place for the personal story, it gives the writer an opportunity to confront the surrounding world. The conventional conception of reality can be questioned. I will use Pierre Bourdieus theory about the biographic I to discuss the Self in the texts. Two definitions of mimesis will be treated. The traditional meaning of the term, given by Plato, and the postmodern point of view, represented by Gilles Deleuze. I aim to investigate how Feberboken and Allt are confronting the generic image of reality.

The bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) race 1, is an important bacterial disease in Pernambuco and other states of Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of essential oils and silicon (Si) on alternative disease control, their effects on Rs, and verify the putative mechanisms involved in these processes. The oils of bergamot, copal, fennel, peppermint, sweet orange, lemon, cinnamon, lemon grass, eucalyptus citriodora, eucalyptus globulus, clary sage, and palmarosa were evaluated by biofumigation. Soil was previously infested with Rs (filotype I, race 1, biovar 3, biotype 8) at 5x108 CFU ml-1 and after seven days biofumigated during four days with the twelve oils (0.14%, v:v) under greenhouse conditions, and with bergamot, sweet orange and palmarosa in field. It was evaluated: the latency period (PL50), incidence, index of bacterial wilt (IBW) and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), plant development, Rs population in soil, soil characteristics, and Rs growth in vitro. The oils of palmarosa, bergamot and sweet orange elevated the PL50 and reduced IBW and AUDPC up to 15, 60 and 64.4%, respectively in greenhouse. In the field only palmarosa elevated the PL50 (38%), reduced the IMB (36%) and AUDPC (38%), and increased the number of fruits per plant. Only under greenhouse conditions soil biofumigated with oils of bergamot and sweet orange had higher sodium levels than those treated with palmarosa or control, which did not differ among them. In vitro, the growth of Rs was inhibited by the oil of palmarosa. To evaluate the effect of silicon (Si), sweet pepper plants cv. Enterprise were grown in compost containing 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 1.50 and 3.00 g of SiO2 kg-1 of compost and transplanted into soil infested with isolate Rs CGM-8, being evaluated PL50, incidence, IMB and AUDPC; fresh and dry weight of shoot and root biomass, accumulation of Ca+2, Mg+2 and Si, total protein and enzymatic activity; chemical characteristics of substrate, and in vitro growth. The dose 3.00 g of SiO2 increased PL50 (34%), reduced IMB (63%) and AUDPC (47.4%), increasing also Ca+2 in shoots and reducing Mg+2 in shoots and roots. Supplementation with different Si doses resulted in maximum increments of fresh weight of shoot (121.8%), fresh weight of root (83.6%), and dry weight of shoot (84.9%); increased total protein, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and quitinase. Si was accumulated in the shoots and compost; pH, Na+ and K+ were elevated and P was reduced in the compost. The putative mechanisms of action of Si on disease control were direct action on the pathogen colonization, indirect action on plant growth, increase of Ca+2 absorption and signaling for producing plant defense enzymes. In conclusion, biofumigation with palmarosa oil and transplant production in compost containing calcium silicate are potential alternative strategies for the control of bacterial wilt of sweet pepper.

Abstract:
This microhistory of an African slave in eighteenth-century New France offers a unique series of angles with which we can examine the motivations, struggles and consequences of slavery in Canada. Mathieu Léveillé worked as a plantation slave in Martinique before arriving in Quebec to serve as the colony's executioner. The story of his importation demonstrates how the buying and selling of these persons reinforced the social and economic connections between Canada's elites and the rest of the Atlantic World. Though often imported as objects of luxury, the slaves themselves generally lived lives of social isolation, marred by their image as odd, foreign and deviant. Léveillé's enslaved status therefore made him the ideal candidate to fill the socially maligned position of the bourreau. Léveillé's Atlantic experience of itinerancy and exchange furthermore offers a glimpse onto the modes of interaction among the various marginalized groups participating in that system. While the population of Canadian slaves under the French regime paled in comparison to that of the more southerly colonies, the value of this study derives from exploring the uniqueness of the institution in this understudied context.

Abstract:
Niccolò Menghini’s marble sculpture of Santa Martina (ca. 1635) in the Church of Santi Luca e Martina in Rome belongs to the seventeenth-century genre of sculpture depicting saints as dead or dying. Until now, scholars have ignored the conceptual and formal concerns of the S. Martina, dismissing it as derivative of Stefano Maderno’s Santa Cecilia (1600). This thesis provides the first thorough examination of Menghini’s S. Martina, arguing that the sculpture is critically linked to the Post-Tridentine interest in the relics of early Christian martyrs. The disjunction between the sculpture’s severed head and seemingly living body reinforces the authority of Pietro da Cortona’s 1634 discovery of St. Martina’s relics beneath the old Church of SS. Luca e Martina. The detached and moveable head (rarely seen in early modern sculpture) evokes associations with cephalophory and inventively implies that St. Martina was somehow miraculously involved in the recovery of her own relics.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to show by a comparative study of the Life of Saint Martin, written in prose by Sulpice Severe at the end of the fourth century, and the two lives written in verse - one by Paulin of Périgueux in the second half of the fifth century, the other by Venance Fortunat in the last quarter of the sixth century - that the two poetic transcriptions of the work reflect a different conception of art as well as a different approach to the spirituality of saint Martin. Sulpice severe wrote the life of Saint Martin and the dialogues to vindicate martin, the bishop of tours, whom he personally knew, against the attacks of the gallo-roman opinion. He proceeded to literary choices to account for the complex personality of a man who was altogether a soldier and monk, an ascetic and a bishop. Paulin de Périgueux updated Sulpice's work to make it accessible to a reader from the fifth century. He set the acts of martin in a human background to make them visually present, and looked for a unifying principle to weld together episodes that Sulpice had merely juxtaposed so that the spiritual and moral meaning might appear. Venance Fortunat distanced himself from the real facts of the earthly life of martin. He treated the episodes as self-contained compositional units chasing them as jewellers or workers in mosaic did at that time. He revealed a spiritual dimension of martin by portraying him as a heavenly intercessor
