Abstract:
This article sets out to study the records and testimonies created during the First World War in order to understand this important historical moment in the existence of Romanian rural communities. Many of the testimonies of Romanian soldiers capture the shift from oral culture and oral language to writing and written culture. Writing, which the soldiers had yet to fully internalize, was one of the few possibilities available to them on the war front to maintain alive the connection with their families and to leave a trace about the exceptional times they were living. These written accounts, which do not always observe the rules of correct writing, make apparent and available to us today a deep layer of oral culture that had until then been orally transmitted from generation to generation. Romanian soldiers from Transylvania were best known for writing home messages in verse, which they composed on the spot, using memorized set structures and phrases from the shared folklore repertoire circulating at the time in the village world. Privates coming from the Kingdom of Romania also made verses in their letters or journal entries, but it was less common. They would sometimes insert in their notes orally transmitted moral stories or parables, as well as other forms and pieces of the peasant oral culture to which they belonged. Some of these testimonies can present real challenges in terms of understanding the writing but also the semantics of some of the words. While familiarized with letters, writing, and reading, their authors had only a rudimentary knowledge of spelling and punctuation rules. To be able to discern the meanings of these writings today, one needs to first understand the complex circumstances that produced them.

Abstract:
World War I has destroyed within four years everything that the ancestral patience of cultivators had been building during millenniums of peasant labour. These traces are mostly visible on the occidental part of the ancient German-British front. More than elsewhere, the war enterprises have devastated the semi-natural territories and the cultivated ones in the region. The fact is certificated by the testimonials of rural people, by archive studies and by a part of the region’s literature which has tackled the subject, especially Le fardeau des jours by Leon Boquet (1924, Paris, Albin Michel).

Abstract:
During World War I, Martin Pappenheim, as a young doctor in the field of neurology and psychiatry, studied various possible consequences of war traumas, perhaps as part of a wider project of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy’s army. He visited military hospitals, sanatoriums and prisons, and between February and June 1916, while residing in Terezin, he had several opportunities to talk with Gavrilo Princip, who was imprisoned there. Princip was a young Bosnian Serb who had assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. There is written evidence of Pappenheim’s conversations with Princip; they were first published in Vienna 1926. My article is concerned with the possibility of Pappenheim’s influence on the later development of Freud’s theory.

Abstract:
After the 9/11 attack, the US invasion of Afghanistan and later the invasion of Iraq, not only changed the dynamics of global politics but also impacted the US defence industry by reaching a new height. This paper analyzes factors that are impacting the financial performance of Lockheed Martin which is measured via Earnings per share (EPS). After analyzing the data of Lockheed Martin for 20 years using Multivariate regression analysis, results indicate that The Defence budget of Iraq and Goodwill hurts EPS. On the other hand, retained earnings and Total debt positively impact the EPS. The company must focus more on its research & development to keep itself ahead of its competitor. The study suggests that Lockheed Martin should focus on obtaining contracts from various countries, especially those who are the major importers of defence equipment, which will help them in enhancing their performance positively.

Abstract:
This study examines the interpretive possibilities in the shorter fiction of Post-War German literature. The corpus includes works by Rolf Hochhuth, Friedrich Durrenmatt and Martin Walser. The historical framework of the theory of the novella and short story provides a basis for a discussion of genre, extended to include the coordinates of metaphor and metonymy. With the exception of one text designated as a novel, these works demonstrate interlocking and restricted motif complexes, repetitive and parallel structure and the integration of most narrative components. They project a tenor of hermetic plurality from a vehicle of abbreviated and truncated referential discourse. They use myth and intertextuality to show general principles to be extrapolated from specific contexts. Metafiction complements the theme of the subject not at one with itself. A partial resolution to the incertitude of existence, rendered according to Freud and Lacan, is offered through the emerging role of women as a stabilizing factor.

Abstract:
Rosler’s 1967-1972 series, Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful conflates images of domestic interiors with images of combat related to the Vietnam War. This thesis places the series within the socio-political context of the Cold War examining the manner in which Rosler utilizes specific elements of governmental ideology and rhetoric to implicate the viewer in complicity with American involvement in Vietnam. The dissemination of governmental ideology through advertising, the effects of desire, and the critique of consumption conveyed by this series are investigated. The series is analyzed in terms of Sigmund Freud’s theory of the Uncanny and in relation to historic use of photomontage. In the final chapter, Rosler’s revival of the series, begun in 2004, is compared to the original in terms of its ability to effectively alter the viewer’s perception of the war in Iraq in terms of politics, media, and institutional context.

Abstract:
Immediately after the Czechoslovak legionnaires got involved in the Russian Civil War, a legal confusion arose in their ranks. Although their own military courts were slowly being established, the Czechoslovak Army Corps was fragmented throughout Siberia into several groups that were in minimal contact with each other and in varying states of organization. The commander of one of these groups was the ambitious officer Radola Gajda who, depending on whether we believe the testimony of his officers or not, either did not receive or ignored the order to create a unified court system and instead created his own, the so-called Special Court Martial. This paper deals with the functioning of this specific judicial body, which became known for the arbitrariness of its decisions and draconian punishments. The result of an investigation that was later ordered to clarify the courts legitimacy and mitigate some of the punishments will also be described.

Abstract:
A directional control margin investigation of the MH-60M Black Hawk helicopter was conducted to address the loss of directional control when operating at high density altitudes and high gross weights. This paper will discuss the flight test techniques used to assess directional control margin, the process for determining gross weight for flight testing at high density altitude, and resolution of the loss of directional control on the MH-60M. Additionally, low density altitude, low gross weight, and low power flight tests were performed to ensure adequate right directional control margin remained after implementation of changes to improve the loss of directional control at high density altitudes and high gross weights. A relationship between power required and directional control margin was established. Based on that relationship, a flight test methodology was developed to successfully quantify the directional control margin (DCM) of the MH-60M in stabilized hover and in the low airspeed flight regimes.

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: How the Three Revolts Against Igor Bensen's Popular Rotorcraft Association During 1962-1976 Failed to Change the Popular Rotorcraft Movement in America." In Vertical Flight Society 72nd Annual Forum & Technology Display. The Vertical Flight Society, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.4050/f-0072-2016-11332.

Full text
Abstract:
During the 1962 - 1982 time period there were three distinct revolts against Igor Bensen's Popular Rotorcraft Association: members of the PRA who saw the PRA as an "association of Bensen dealers"; Ken Brock of California whose attempts to standardize and industrialize the Bensen B8M kit, which were not intended as a challenge, ended up forcing Bensen's withdrawal from formal PRA leadership in early 1973; and the International Gyroplane movement of Martin Hollmann of the mid-1970s which boldly challenged the Bensen heritage even after Bensen's presidency. The irony of each of these revolts is to be found in their genesis and eventual impact: the members' revolt was seemingly ineffective, yet analysis reveals it had a long-lasting impact; the Brock revolt appeared to be the most successful, yet it occasioned little change on the American popular rotorcraft movement; while the International Gyroplane Association, correctly perceiving that the PRA under the leadership of Ken Brock was, in many significant ways, actually a continuation of Bensen's PRA, mounted a vigorous challenge that was seemingly the least effective of the three revolts. But historical analysis reveals that the International Gyroplane revolt of Martin Hollmann, while deemed an utter failure, had the real potential of changing the American Popular Rotorcraft. That Hollmann's revolt did not have a significant impact was largely due to his vitriolic personality and animosity towards Bensen and Brock, and the Popular Rotorcraft movement is poorer for it.

Abstract:
This report is adapted from the forthcoming Climate Instruments for the Transport Sector (CITS) report written by Cornie Huizenga, convener of the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), and Stefan Bakker, from the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands. Under the CITS project, studies were carried out in two Asian and two Latin American cities to explore how NAMAs, a new financial mechanism being developed under the UNFCCC, may support emissions reductions from urban transport policies and programs. The authors received valuable input from: Dario Hidalgo, from EMBARQ/World Resources Institute, for the Belo Horizonte case study; Frederic Rudolph, Urda Eichhorst and Wolfgang Sterk, from Wuppertal Institute, for the Hefei case study; Holger Dalkmann and Ko Sakamoto, from Transport Research Laboratory, for the Jakarta case study; and Martina Jung and Christian Ellermann, from ECOFYS, for the Mexico case study. This report was edited by Peter Shifter. The CITS project was guided by Rafael Acevedo-Daunas, Maria Cordeiro, Vera Lucia Vicentini, Maria Netto and Francisco Arango at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and by Jamie Leather and Sharad Saxena at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The two case studies in Asian cities were financed by the ADB, and the two Latin American studies by the IDB. The combined report was financed by the ADB and the publication financed by the IDB as part of a combined effort within an MOU signed by both institutions and their participation in the SLoCaT partnership.

Epetia, Ma Christina, John Joseph Ocbina, and Kimberly Librero. Where Have the Workers Gone since the COVID-19 Pandemic? Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.62986/dp2023.22.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to investigate how labor markets in the Philippines responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by decomposing the change in average annual hours of work per person and analyzing the extent of reallocation across occupations, sectors, classes of work, and nature of work. It finds that the declining average work hours before the pandemic was primarily due to the extensive margin. However, the huge fall in work hours in the first year of the pandemic is attributed to the intensive margin to a larger extent and the extensive margin to a lesser degree. Although work hours moderately increased later into the pandemic, the larger contribution of the change occurring at the intensive margin persisted. The same implication can be observed even when the difference in average hours of work is examined by gender and age group, except for the old age bracket among women, where the change at the extensive margin consistently dominated the difference in average hours of work. Furthermore, lower reallocations across occupations and sectors were seen during the pandemic, contrasting the spike in reallocations in developed countries. That is, labor markets in the Philippines appear to be less dynamic in the face of huge economic shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Although higher reallocation across work classes was observed for women during the pandemic, this was due to the rising employment shares of paid and unpaid family workers. Higher reallocation across the nature of work is also associated with the increasing share of short-term employment. With limited social safety nets that protect worker income amid economic shocks, there appears to be little leeway for workers to adjust in the labor market. Workers and households should be adequately supported to protect their income and welfare, especially during economic downturns.

Abstract:
Exploration for hydrocarbons began in the Labrador-Baffin Seaway in the 1960s; activity along the Labrador margin is still ongoing. A moratorium on exploration activities in the Canadian Arctic was enacted in 2016, halting drilling and data acquisition in western Davis Strait and along the Baffin Island margin. The exploration for hydrocarbons along the West Greenland margin ceased in 2021. Despite the presence of all hydrocarbon system elements as well as direct indicators of at least one working hydrocarbon system (e.g. slicks and/or seeps, oil and/or gas shows), no commercially viable accumulations of hydrocarbons have been discovered in the region. Potential sea-surface hydrocarbon slicks have been identified throughout the study region using synthetic aperture radar, but only the slick offshore Scott Inlet (Nunavut) has been directly linked to seafloor hydrocarbon seepage.
