This dissertation compares the stories of mothers of martyrs from many different religious traditions with those of Canadian mothers who were willing to send their sons to war during World War One. Over the years in the Jewish, Christian, Islamic and Sikh traditions stories have been written, repeated, dramatized and painted of mothers who were supportive of their children's martyrdom. Between 1914 and 1918 the Canadian mothers of young men found themselves living in a world in which war was increasingly described in the religious language of sacrifice. This thesis examines the portrayal of outsider, or ‘stranger’ groups in the series of Protestant martyrologies known as the Livre des Martyrs. The book’s compiler, editor, and publisher, Jean Crespin, placed the defence of religious doctrine as a mark of a true martyr, and a central theme of the book. He also, in the manner of his contemporaries John Foxe and Ludwig Rabus, wished to write a history of the true persecuted Church, which led him to search for martyrs from a wider range of groups who had come into conflict with the Catholic Church. Aux XVIème et XVIIème siècles, il existait une tradition du dernier discours prononcé par le condamné à mort sur l’échafaud en Angleterre. On attendait de lui un aveu en bonne et due forme, par lequel il devait exprimer sa repentance et demander pardon au roi. Cette pratique s’inscrivait dans un cadre idéologique politique mais aussi religieux, sur l’art de bien mourir (ars moriendi). This thesis. looks at a group of texts, that it has identified as English Protestant~ antI-epIscopal martyrologies, in their social context. It examines the dIalogue In print and manuscript between Protestant reformers in Tudor England and the bishops who opposed them. I argue that an analysis of the polemlical texts which contributed to this dialogue demonstrates the strongly antI-epIscopal stance adopted by English Protestants from the early sixteenth century to the accession of Elizabeth I. The aim of my project is to show how the lives, strategies and attitudes of Huguenot printers of the late sixteenth century both reflected and influenced the self-image of Protestant Europeans. Celem pracy było sprawdzenie, w jaki sposób mieszkańcy dwóch historycznie istotnych miejsc: warszawskiego Muranowa oraz Oświęcimia pamiętają przeszłość swojej najbliższej okolicy. Obydwa miejsca są przestrzeniami ważnymi dla historii Polski oraz dla historii społeczności żydowskiej. Praca miała dwa podstawowe cele: (1) idiograficzny – polegający na zbadaniu zawartości pamięci społecznej mieszkańców Oświęcimia i Muranowa; (2) teoretyczny – polegający na sprawdzeniu, od czego zależą szczegółowe treści pamięci mieszkańców.
