Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the "blocking-and-retrieval-failure" account of overregularization (OR; G. F. Marcus, 1995; G. F. Marcus et al., 1992), the claim that a symbolic rule generates regular inflection is founded on pervasively low past tense OR rates and the lack of a substantive difference between past tense and plural OR rates. Evidence of extended periods of OR in the face of substantial correct input (M. Maratsos, 2000) and of an initial period in which nouns are more likely to be overregularized than verbs (V. A. Marchman, K. Plunkett, & J. Goodman, 1997) casts doubt on the blocking account and suggests instead an interplay between type and token frequency effects that is more consistent with usage-based approaches (e.g., J. Bybee, 1995; K. Köpcke, 1998; K. Plunkett & V. Marchman, 1993). However, previous naturalistic studies have been limited by data that account for only 1–2% of child speech. The current study reports analyses of verb and noun ORs in a dense naturalistic corpus (1 child, 2;00.12–3;11.06 [years;months.days]) that captures 8–10% of child speech and input. The data show (a) a marked difference in verb and noun OR rates; (b) evidence of a relationship between relative regular/irregular type frequencies and the onset and rate of past tense and plural ORs; (c) substantial OR periods for some verbs and nouns despite hundreds of correct tokens in child speech and input; and (d) a strong negative correlation between input token frequencies and OR rates for verbs and nouns. The implications of these findings for blocking and other accounts of OR are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
V.; FOLEGATTI, M.V.PERFORMANCE OF THE BOWEN RATIO-ENERGY BALANCE METHOD FOR THE ESTIMATION OF REFERENCE EVAPOTRANSPIRATION 2 ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Bowen ratio-Energy balance (BREB) and Penman-Monteith (PM) methods for the estimation of daily reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in relation to measurements of a weighing lysimeter. The experiment was carried out in Piracicaba-SP, in an area cultivated with Bahia grass (Paspalum notatumFlügge) from June 11th to 25th, 2000. ETo estimation accuracy was evaluated based on the Willmott agreement index (d) and on the standard error estimation (SEE), and its precision through the determination coefficient (r²) of the linear regression between estimated and measured ETo. The performance was evaluated using the confidence index (c = d x r) of Camargo and Sentelhas. The means of ETo estimates through BREB and PM did not show significant statistical differences (ANOVA p < 0.05) compared with the means of ETo measured in the lysimeter. The PM method showed higher agreement (d = 0.99 and SEE = 0.09 mm d-1) and precision (r² = 0.95) compared with BREB (d = 0.92, SEE = 0.15 mm d-1 and r² = 0.86). However, the performances of both BREB (c = 0.85) and PM (c = 0.97) methods were above 0.85, which is considered optimal according to the index c. Fibrosis is a chronic liver disease that is a major cause of human mortality and is characterized by the accumulation of extracellular matrix in response to chronic liver injury. Important causes of chronic liver injury are: viral hepatitis, metabolic diseases, autoimmune diseases and exposure to chemicals, such as alcohol or drugs. The GRX cells are a representative line of hepatic stellate cells (HSC), which is associated with development of fibrosis, in the last stage is the cirrhosis. In healthy liver, these cells exhibit a phenotype or quiescent lipocyte characterized by its hability to store lipid droplets. Gallic acid is involved in several biological processes such as cell growth inhibition and apoptosis also has a variety of pharmacological actions, including antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antitumor. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of gallic acid on the phenotype of HSC. The results showed that gallic acid is able to reduce cell proliferation, induce quiescent phenotype in HSCs by increasing lipid droplets, probably by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gama, decrease of transforming growth factor 1 signaling and decreased expression of collagen type I. These results demonstrate that the gallic acid may be a novel therapeutic agent for treating hepatic fibrosis.

Abstract:
This study investigates and documents tenor/bass trombone solo performances at the Gewandhaus, Leipzig, East Germany, between 1821 and 1876. Included is the discussion of a newly discovered composition, the Concertino fur Bassposaune und Orchester, by Carl Heinrlch Meyer, which is the earliest concerto for the tenor/bass trombone. Its performance at the Gewandhaus in 1821 marked the beginning of the solo tradition for the tenor/bass trombone, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus became one of the leading centers of solo trombone performance for the next fifty years. The study includes background information on the rise of the virtuoso soloist in nineteenth-century Germany. It specifically focuses on Friedrlch August Belcke and Carl Traugott Queisser and their performances at the Gewandhaus. All solo trombone performances at the Gewandhaus in the nineteenth century have been documented, and specific information has been provided regarding the soloists, dates of performances and repertoire performed on the concerts. The paper includes a discussion of performance reviews from the Allgemeine Musfkalische Zeitung. The conclusion discusses the importance of solo trombone performance at the Gewandhaus, and the reason for its sudden decline after 1876.

Abstract:
The English art song in the 20th-century presents a performance challenge unique in the solo song repertoire. Unlike the corresponding bodies of German Lied and French mélodie, which proceeded from a well-ingrained national tradition of music and poetry, the English art song had no such background. The many British composers who have contributed to the song literature of this century reflect varied backgrounds and influences. Lennox Berkeley combined his English heritage with the French background of his mother's family, largely self-taught musical skills and an innate sensitivity to poetry to become one of the most prominent song composers of this century. He trained with Nadia Boulanger, gaining exposure to the formal and melodic techniques of Faure and the neo-classicism of Stravinsky. Berkeley composed a total of seventy-eight solo songs. His acceptance and furtherance of a fundamentally traditional songmaker's craft place him more directly in the post-war line of succession of English song than Benjamin Britten, whose innovative musical techniques place him in the vanguard of new music. This document explores those aspects of Berkeley's life and work that contribute to his compositional choices. It provides an overview of all of Berkeley's known solo songs as well as a more detailed analysis of Five Songs (Walter de la Mare), Five Poems CW.H. Auden) and Another Spring. The paper illustrates the qualities of Berkeley's songs which justify his inclusion among the most successful art song composers of this century

Abstract:
Jules Massenet's mélodies feature a distinct vocal treatment regarding musical prosody through his eight song cycles, including Poëme d'Avril, Poëme Pastoral, Poëme du Souvenir, Poëme d'Amour, Poëme d'Hiver, Poëme d'un Soir, and Quelques Chansons Mauves, and a collection, Expressions Lyriques. These mélodies show the influence of the trend of salon music and the high-level poetry from the poetic movements of romanticism, Parnassianism, and symbolism. This study deals with Massenet's mélodies relating to the prosody idea, which is conspicuous in his vocal treatment. His melodic styles feature four distinct aspects of vocal treatment including lyrical, recitative or parlando, melodramatic, and déclamation rhythmée, and represent the idea of musical prosody of phonetic, syntactic, and semantic aspects. Massenet's other musical idioms such as harmony, form, and piano treatment, are also closely related to the prosody matter as a semantic aspect, reinforcing the poetic mood and content. In this study, each melodic style related to French versification is examined in detail. The musical analysis regarding the other musical idioms on selected examples presents the semantic feature of prosody idea. The brief review of French versification and opinions regarding the performance are included. Massenet's contribution to the genre of mélodie, with the prose melody and treatment of piano as an equal partner of voice line, is clearly demonstrated. With this contribution, Massenet should be recognized as the most influential composer to the climatic time of French mélodie led by Fauré, and Debussy, and Duparc.

Tran-Drouin, Simon.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
In mid-eighteenth-century France, a type of ensemble music was introduced for harpsichord and another instrument(s) in which the harpsichord part is completely written out, instead of a bass line with figures to be realized. Composers of this genre used the word "accompanied" in the tides or in the prefaces of their collections to describe the genre. This study examines the earliest examples of this genre, the works of seven composers, published in the 1740's, (Mondonville, Rameau, Boismoitier, Clement, Dupuits, Guillemain, and Luc Marchand), and compares the various styles of the written out parts, both harpsichord and additional instrument, to determine the nature of the word, "accompaniment."

Thesis, Pau, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PAUU2013/document.

Full text
Abstract:
With the latest reforms, among which the Hospital, Patient, Healthcare and Territory (HPST) Law, the French Hospital has changed not only the form of its organisation through the implementation of a polar organisation, but also its environmental concern. This polar organisation aims to strive for performance and efficiency via an managerial and medical approach. Thus, some management tools have been set up aimed in particular at giving feedback on such performance. In this context, how can professionals from such distinct fields as management and healthcare work? Management implies the optimization of resources when the public sector above all upholds values of social usefulness and patient care. Healthcare actors feel very much involved in this mission of social usefulness. In this work we propose to identify how cultural gaps within hospital poles contribute to a loss of meaning and acknowledgment among healthcare agents. Those cultural gaps will be examined more particularly through management tool appropriation. This study relies on interviews conducted in various healthcare facilities (PCO and psychiatric hospitals of various capacities such as CHU and CH). It reveals the need for innovative managerial practices, especially designed for intercultural management, so that every actor of these new hospital facilities may feel that they are understood and integrated in this dynamic process. The proposed study can make up interesting feedback to better understand and improve the use of these new management tools. Recommendations are issued that can be food for thought to meet the current challenges of public hospitals

Abstract:
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) G series gas turbine is the industry pioneer in introducing steam cooling technology for gas turbines. The first M501G unit started commercial operation in 1997 and to date, with 62 G units sold, MHI G fleet is the largest steam cooled fleet in the market. The existing commercial fleet includes 35 commercial units with more than 734,000 accumulated actual operating hours, and over 9,400 starts. Upgraded versions have been introduced in the 60 and 50Hz markets (M501G1 and M701G2 respectively). On a different arena, MHI is engaged since 2004 in a Japanese National Project for the development of 1,700°C (3092°F) class gas turbine. Several enhanced technologies developed through this Japanese National Project, including lower thermal conductivity TBC, are being retrofitted to the existing F and G series gas turbines. Retrofitting some of these technologies to the existing M501G1 together with the application of an F class air cooled combustion system will result in an upgraded air-cooled G class engine with increased power output and enhanced efficiency, while maintaining the same 1500°C (2732°F) Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT). By using an open air cooling scheme, this upgraded machine represents a better match for highly cyclic applications with G class efficiency, while the highly reliable and durable steam cooled counterpart is still offered for more base-loaded applications. After performing various R&D tests, the verification process of the air cooled 60 Hz G gas turbine has moved to component testing in the in-house verification engine. The final verification test prior to commercial operation is scheduled for 2009. This article describes the design features and verification plan of the upgraded M501G gas turbine.

Abstract:
Design features and verification results for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) latest gas Dry Low NOx (DLN) combustor technology for 1500°C G-class gas turbines is presented. Key design improvements include: A) Inlet aerodynamics: CFD based design air inlet for improved flow uniformity into the pre-mixers. B) Fuel/air mixing: integrated fuel injector and swirler to decrease local flame hot-spots and reduce NOx while preventing flashback. C) Combustor aerodynamics: redesigned flame holding baffle and combustor outer wall to achieve better flame stability and NOx reduction. D) Acoustic resonator: two acoustic resonators, one in the liner to prevent high frequency combustion dynamics and the other in the bypass valve for low frequency dynamics. Tests were conducted to verify the new DLN combustor by installing it in a M501G1 gas turbine at MHI’s T-Point combined cycle power plant, with more than 1500 special measurements. Following the preliminary verification period the combustor was installed at the same plant for long-term operation. The results demonstrate the following capabilities: A) Less than 15ppm NOx operation with turn down to 60% load. B) Stable combustion dynamics at all load levels. C) High combustor ignition reliability. D) Suitable for daily start and stop (DSS) operation. E) Good reliability and durability. F) Retrofitable to existing 501G and 701G gas turbines.

Abstract:
Lipoxygenase activities were estimated in platelet subcellular fractions as well as in intact platelets obtained from normal subjects and patients with deficient platelet lipoxygenase activities (<mean - 2SD of normal activities). From a washed platelet suspension (intact platelets), subcellular fractions including 12,000 x g supernatant of sonicated platelets (F-I), 105,000 x g supernatant (cytosol, F-II) and sediment (microsomal fraction, F-III) of F-I were prepared by differential centrifugation at 4°C. The enzyme activity was studied by the determination of 12-hy-droxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE; ng) produced by the reaction of 100μM arachidonic acid with 108 platelets or the subcellular fraction derived from them at pH 7.4 for 5 min at 37°C in the presence or absence of 2.5 mM CaCl2 and/or 2 mM ATP by the use of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. In experiments with subcellular fractions, reduced glutathione was added to the reaction mixture. In normal subjects, HETE production by intact platelets, F-I, F-II and F-III was 1,162.4±203.3, 1,029.7±403.8, 368.8±175.8 and 194.4±73.4 (M±SD, n=9), respectively, and was not significantly affected by the addition of CaCl2 and/or ATP. HETE produced by 12,000 x g sediment of sonicated platelets was negligible (<1 % of the product by intact platelets). One of the 7 patients showed no detectable lipoxygenase activity both in intact platelets and in any subcellular fractions, while, the other 6 patients showed reduced lipoxygenase activities in all subcellular fractions as well as in intact platelets: HETE produced by intact platelets, F-I, F-II and F-III was 78.8± 112.3, 59.1± 36.3, 37.0± 18.9 and 17.7±15.8 (n=6), respectively. The addition of CaCl2 significantly increased HETE production only by the patient’s F-I (p< 0.02),while ATP showed no significant effect in any experiments. Thus, it was shown that lipoxygenaseactivities were not fully exhibited in intact platelets with the deficient enzyme activities and that F-I could produce more HETE than intact platelets especially in the presence of CaCl2 only in the case of such patient’s platelets.

Gentry, R., and Y. Nemerson. "THE ACTIVATION OF PROTHROMBIN: A LINKED REACTIVE KINETIC MODEL." In XIth International Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Schattauer GmbH, 1987. http://dx.doi.org/10.1055/s-0038-1643932.

Full text
Abstract:
Prothrombin activation by factors Xa and Va is complex, involving five linked reactions occurring either in a bulk fluid phase or in a local phospholipid (PL) surface phase, each controlled by both the fundamental energetics of the species interactions and the relevant reactant concentrations. The significance of each reaction and in particular the kinetic efficiency of the PL surface reactions is yet to be resolved. Previous essentially Michaelis-Menten kinetic treatments of prothrombin activation have been derived without concern for the kinetic influence of the order of reactant assembly or possible nonlinear effects induced by complex trapping of reactants, as observed in factor VIIa reactions (Nemerson and Gentry, Biochem. (1976) 25, 4020). We propose a general model to analyze and explain this and similar PL associated coagulation reactions. The mathematical model consist of a system of nonlinear first order differential equations:dX/dt - F(X(t),C(t),K); dC/dt - G(X(t),C(t),K), where the functionals F and G are derived from standard kinetic principles. To model prothrombin activation in this general setting the fluid and bound reactions are described by two parallel but linked systems, denoted S1(X,C,K) and S2(X*,C ,K*), respectively. In the linked relationship the primary constituents transfer between the systems, governed by a transfer component -T, resulting in a system of “linked-reactive” equations of the form:dX/dt = -F(X, C, K) - T ; dX*/dt = F*(X*,C*,K*) + T* , etc. A key consideration is to ensure that the concentrations of reactive species are relative to the reactive volume in which the kinetic interactions are to occur. The detailed equations for prothrombin activation involve for the bulk phase three primary variables X1, X2, and X3 corresponding to factors Va, Xa, and prothrombin, four complexes, Ci, and a duplicate stared set for the PL phase. After condensation the resultant system of 11 differential equations involves 28 kinetic parameters; this has significant implications for the ability to uniquely identify the parameters but poses no difficulties for its use as a predictive model via its numerical simulation for specific parameter values.
