Abstract:
The feminine and masculine in Diotima's metaphor of childbirth Abstract: This article revisits the presence of Diotima within the context of Plato’s Symposium through Socrates’ recollective discourse on the teachings he received from the woman of Mantineia when he was still very young. The theatrical interplay of a masculine discourse that alludes to the echoes of a female figure’s speech, whose content embodies masculine values, prompts me to consider the status of the feminine and the masculine from the perspective of the relationship between physical childbirth and spiritual childbirth. Throughout the analysis, I intend to compare some representations of feminine nature in the Platonic dialogues, noting the differential treatment in how Plato addresses the question of the feminine from various perspectives. This includes the thesis of the similar nature of women and men and the controversial community of women and children, contained respectively in the first and second waves in Republic V; or the thesis of gender differences in the Timaeus. The interpretative approach consists of revisiting the context of the so-called “gender question” in Plato through the metaphors of childbirth and motherhood. Keywords: Birth; Motherhood; Masculine; Feminine; Immortality.

Abstract:
Masculine nouns are ambiguous, since their denotation can have either a specified gender (including only men) or a gender-neutral value (including both men and women). Masculine nouns are ambiguous, since their denotation can have either a specified gender (including only men) or a gender-neutral value (including both men and women). A questionnaire-based study was carried out in order to determine whether in specific sentences a plural masculine noun was interpreted as including feminine referents or not. The data show a tendency to consider the gender-specific interpretation (with only masculine referents) as the most acceptable one. This tendency is observed for all the categories of nouns investigated. However, the opposite tendency prevails when the sentence contains a noun related to a female stereotype.

Dossier 28, no. 2 (June 17, 2003): 73–85. http://dx.doi.org/10.7202/006597ar.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Media as a medium plays a significant role in strengthening gender concept in society. Female’s sexualities are viewed as an object of judgement for the media. For the sake of men readers’ satisfaction, media justifies itself in its attempts to exploit women sexuality. Masculine’s way of thinking has been perpetuated in reports about women. Masculine men are considered empowering female’s bodies. Violence acts are considered as the form of masculine domination over feminine beings. This research aims to dismantle how media construct their texts on masculine discourses on online news portals. Online news portals are required to be swift in uploading news and using their acquired resources; thus, they perpetuate this masculine discourse. Critical discourse analysis of Van Dick was employed to unravel masculine discourse structures on media texts at the largest news portals in Indonesia, Alexa.com; and Tribunnews.com; which belong to a corporate media, Kompas Gramedia. The findings of this research state that online news portals and their acquired resources strengthen violence labelling as a part of masculine domination over feminine beings.

Abstract:
This paper draws on a programme of research examining the benefit of men’s sheds in the Australian context. Firstly, the author clears some contentious ground regarding women’s disadvantage and equality and acknowledges the position that has been made by feminists relating to the implications of unequal distribution of materials and resources and puts forward a case that uneven distribution of resources cannot only restrict many women but also some men. The author examines men’s health status in Australia and drawing from a programme of research discusses the link between men’s shed involvement and health and wellbeing benefits. The paper makes use of Sen’s Capabilities Approach to put forward the case that men’s sheds in the Australian context provide a space where enabling capabilities developed through meaningful activities can benefit men relating to health and wellbeing outcomes.
