In a previous paper [1], I described a method for computing sums of powers via a matrix composed from Pascal's triangle. Some were nearly four hundred years old and the most recent one was published this year. One rather obscure work I stumbled across was ‘On the sums of powers of natural numbers’ by the Japanese mathematician Mr T. Kariya, published in Tokyo in 1907. AbstractThis article investigates the concept of maslaha in contemporary Islamic legal theory. After presenting models of maslaha developed by al-Ghazālī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, al-Qarāfī, al-Tūfī, and al-Shātibī, I analyze writings on maslaha by leading jurists from the late 13th/19th century to the 1380s/1960s, namely al-Qāsimī, Rashīd Ridā, Mahmasānī, 'Allāl al-Fāsī, Khallāf, and al-Būtī. The findings show that the early reformers tended towards al-Tūfī's expansive understanding of the principle of maslaha in the law-finding process. Later jurisprudents, in contrast, either advocated a holis

In the eastern part of Jordan’s capital, Amman, where women maintained friendships through the exchange of help and support, accusations of maslaha (opportunism) had the potential to undermine relationships. Those accusations generated ugly feelings characterized by a confusion between the things wrong with oneself that make one vulnerable to the problem of maslaha and the things wrong with Jordanian society that make maslaha so widespread. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in one East Amman neighbourhood, Tal al-Zahra, between 2011 and 2015, this article explores the ways that encoun

Both Arcadia II: Concerto for Marimba and Percussion Ensemble and Concerto for Marimba and Band display the techniques and influences that have become characteristic of his compositional style. The primary purpose of this study is to provide connections between a formal motivic analysis and the programmatic content of David Maslanka's three works for unaccompanied marimba: Variations on Lost Love (1977), My Lady White (1980), and A Solemn Music (2013). A comparison of the compositional process of each of these works is proposed through terms of Maslanka's use of depiction. Depiction is the action or result of representing through drawing, painting, or other art form, in this case, music. In each work for unaccompanied marimba, Maslanka uses this process of depiction in a unique way.

Abstract:
The fifth chapter examines how “Deobandi” tradition is mediated through scholarly and pedagogical networks in theory and practice. The first part of the chapter focuses on Qari Muhammad Tayyib, rector of the Dar al-`Ulum Deoband for half a century and the foremost theorist of Deobandi identity, arguing that mid-twentieth century Deobandis like Tayyib developed the concept of the maslak (“path” or “way”) as a means of lending ideological and affective coherence to a rapidly expanding global network. Tayyib theorized the maslak as a “middle path” between ideological extremes—as, for instance, between those who indulge in “excessive” Sufi devotions and those who dispense with Sufism altogether—and as an embodied discourse one learns to inhabit through the companionship of those who already do. The second part of the chapter, shifting from theory to practice, traces the rise of the Tablighi Jama`at, a Deobandi revivalist movement that sought to make individual Muslims mobile “embodiments” of the seminary and the Sufi lodge, effectively translating Thanvi’s project of public reform into an actual program, one explicitly based on internalizing the teachings of Ashraf `Ali Thanvi’s Urdu primers for lay Muslims, on shunning public debate of controversial legal issues, and on the replication of a set of reformed affects in others—hence the Tablighi Jama`at’s role, by mid-century, in propelling Deobandi tradition across the globe.

This chapter lays out the historical background of Muslim women’s education in British India and post-Independence India, including statistical data on UP education history and the Sachar Commission Report. The chapter then explores girls’ madrasa education, in north India specifically, with a focus on a Rampur madrasa (of Jama‘at-i Islami affiliation) for girls and compares this madrasa with the Tablighi madrasa for girls studied by Winkelmann. The chapter ends with an Appendix that lays out the syllabi of the two madrasas examined in the chapter, in order to highlight their ideological differences. This shows us how much the second madrasa has in common with the Barelwi madrasa portrayed in this book, despite differences in their denominational (maslaki) identities.

Abstract:
Pasar Malam (Night bazar) and Pasar Paghi (Morning bazar) are grassroots microenterprises in Malaysia and Indonesia. They combine traditional approach with the scope of modernizing to develop beyond restrained bounds. This chapter recognizes the potential for further organized ways of developing the grassroots enterprises through participatory development of enabling social choices. These opportunities are explained to expand from grassroots to institutional levels, technological appropriateness, and cooperative financing. All are taken up within the sustainability of life-fulfillment regimes of wellbeing and dynamic basic-needs regime of development. In Islamic nomenclature the wellbeing criterion is referred to as maslaha. It denotes the conceptual and quantitative measure of degrees of complementarities between the variables representing choices in the formal evaluative function. This study generalizes the resulting empirical model of wellbeing to strategy and policy implications of a generalized example of the grassroots.
