Full textThe thesis proves the presence of a symbolical background (that of the imaginary figure of the cosmic man) in the contemporary model of the "self-realized man” as shown in the psychological philosophy of Abraham Maslow {USA, 1908-1970).There is undeniably a certain "descosmiczation" of this “universal man” and creator in Maslow's psychology. We could date that there is a tendency towards secularizing and psychologizing that lies behind the symbolical world where the self-realized man is rooted, thus generating the various images of the cosmic man. We hence prove that under the conceptual framework of a psychological terminology, there lies the presence of an actual network of schemes, images and isotope symbols of the generic and symbolical figure of the cosmic man. This figure as such, casts a very optimistic picture of man and his environment, clearly showing that the ultimate meaning of the symbolical function is euphemism, acting as an "auspicious principle", the mythical and ideal perspective of meaningfulness. Maslow's "creative personality" is herein analysed by the light of the very lines of symbolical interpretation used to interpret other earlier figurations, forerunners of the generic "cosmic man”, thus showing certain structural isomorphisms.

Acculturation can be a difficult process for many immigrants, and because there is a large number of Iranian immigrants living in the United States (over one million), the focus of this study is to understand how women cope with moving from a country with conservative standards to a more liberal country and the role dress plays in their acculturation process. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to: 1) explore Iranian dress standards and the effect these standards have on Iranian-American women’s lives; 2) gain understanding of the role of dress in women’s transition from Iranians to Iranian-Americans; 3) apply Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs motivational model to the women's acculturation process; and 4) compare two distinct generations of women—women born before the 1979 Islamic Revolution and women born after the Revolution. This study utilized a qualitative approach and collected data through semi-structured interviews with 11 women. The women did not express any traumatic psychological effects caused by the conservative dress standards in Iran. The main impact of the dress standards was the physical discomfort caused by wearing the hijab in hot weather. Dress played a significant role in the women's transitions process. More freedom in dress in the United States has allowed the women to express themselves much more than when they lived in Iran, leading to higher self-esteem and confidence levels. The women expressed a desire to sustain their Iranian heritage, and both generations shared similar perceptions of American dress standards prior to immigrating to the United States. Differences included higher consumption levels by the younger generation and their higher knowledge about the fashion industry and trends. The findings can be useful for Iranian women as they transition to an Iranian-American lifestyle. Additionally, it can also be beneficial to women from other countries who share similar experiences. Furthermore, the results may assist in aiding different organizations which help Iranian women integrate into the U.S. culture. Finally, retailers with target markets similar to the women of this study can use the findings to better understand the habits, needs, motives, and overall consumer behaviors of their clientele.

Full text“What characterizes an acceptable theory of self-realization?” The thrust of the present dissertation is towards seeking an answer to this central problem, which stems from the fundamental human experience that life involves change, and that in a modern society such change is often expected to be towards a realization of potentials and the good life for the individual.
The dissertation has a three-fold purpose. The first is to clarify the content of five modern theories of self-realization from three academic fields. The theories are those of the psychologist Abraham H. Maslow, the philosophers Charles Taylor and Alan Gewirth, and the theologians Reinhold Niebuhr and Bernard Lonergan. These are methodologically studied by the help of seven analytical questions. The second purpose is to perform a lengthwise comparatative analysis of the five theories, the results of which lead to the third; namely to critically discuss several elements of the reality of human life which have proven to be missing or supressed in much of the material.
The theoretical framework for the dissertation runs along two axes: one concerns what is developed as a distinction between internalism and relationalism, and the other is to cast a critical light on the lack of attention paid by the the theories of self-realization to experiences which run counter to optimistic ideas of individual development, such as death, loss and dependence.
The dissertation concludes with an outline for a constructive position based on the necessity of a theory’s closeness to experience, and on the need for reconcilitation of what may seem to be unabridgeble in human life. A theory of self-realization must do more than formulate positive conditions for change. It must also take into consideration conditions that are not directly related to, and sometimes even run contrary to, realization of the self.

This research was developed in the field of Psychology of Religion and sought to investigate the theoretical foundations of Humanistic Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology and their conceptions and considerations on the concept of spirituality. The humanistic school, a precursor of transpersonal psychology, presented a theory of spirituality fitted full of references to the transcendent, the urge to self-realization and self-actualization, to metaneeds and to peak experiences. However, it was up to the task of transpersonal psychology extend this framework further. This school studies altered states of consciousness and its applications, becoming the first psychological approach to expressly assume that humans have a spiritual dimension. Introduce new concepts like cosmic consciousness, ultimate values, mystical experience, sacredness of life, experience of Unity, responsiveness and maximum sensory awareness. Express a spirituality devoid of organized religion and an anthropological concept of searching for meaning, self-transcendence, supreme values and the search for unity with the cosmos

Carvalho, Paulo Filipe Ferreira. "A ponderação de bens em Direito Administrativo." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10437/4058.
When the conflict concerning two legal rules is not resolvable due to the absence of rules of conflict (which happens particularly in the field of fundamental rights or when one tries to apply legal principles), the solution cannot be found through subsumption, but by ponderation reasoning. This ponderation should not be subjetive, but objetive, based on an externally controllable system. Currently, the most internationally reputed ponderation system is Robert Alexy’s weight formula. Here it is explained the definition of balancing, its origin and expression in other countries, its eligibility, and the above mentioned formula. It is advocated the application of an alternative system based on the psychological theory of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, alongside with examples of the applicability of this theory in tangible cases. These principles are also applied to the singularities of administrative law.

Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes chronicles McCourt’s childhood in Irish slum where he encounters various kinds of predicament and how he keeps a positive thinking in bitterness; eventually he achieves his goal—American dream. His winning Pulitzer Prize marks the highlight of McCourt’s long and painful maturing process from childhood. His struggling process illustrates many valuable educational lessons of the prestigious psychologist Abraham Maslow. In this thesis, I would like to use Maslow’s theory of Hierarchy of Needs to delineate the transformation of process of the protagonist in Angela’s Ashes, Frank McCourt. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The opening chapter introduces Frank McCourt’s background and scholarship. Also, it compares the similarities and differences of writing style between Frank McCourt and two notable Irish writers—Oscar Wilde and James Joyce. Chapter Two presents a brief framework of Maslow’s Hierarchy Needs. Maslow’s hierarchical structure of human needs enlightens the protagonist’s transformation process from a seemingly hopeless child in a slum to a fully developed and independent man. It also indicates the transformation process how Frank McCourt upgrades himself from a physical laborer to an intellectual. Chapter Three analyses the key persons who have strong impacts on Frank McCourt. First two are Frank McCourt’s parents. Frank McCourt experiences the roller caster of complex emotions toward his parents. However, he still holds many legacies from his parents. Then, he comes across four substitute fathers. Each substitute father acts as a role model who affects him in different aspects. The last but not least are two puppy lovers. Chapter Four studies four key factors in public domain. These factors contribute to different effects and show vividly the ideological conflicts in Frank McCourt’s thoughts. They are school, society, religion and nationalism respectively. At school, young McCourt is detected to have a gift of writing. In society, he notices that he suffers from class discrimination. Ultimately, the powerful Catholicism and overarching nationalism dominate his childhood, but Frank McCourt keeps a paradoxical attitude to these two factors-both revered and reviled. The conclusion chapter gives some pedagogical reflections from my experience in teaching young students from disadvantaged families. Finally, it concludes with the faith that Frank McCourt’s struggling process brings to those disadvantaged children and young people.
