Abstract:
Lowell Mason's The Song Garden (1864–66) is a progressively arranged set of three volumes that may be regarded as the first music series books for schoolchildren. According to the publisher, the series is a “systematic, intelligible, and thorough course of teaching vocal music” (p. ii). Following Pestalozzian principles, Mason believed that students should first learn by rote before actually reading music. Following the singing-school tradition, each book began with a strong theoretical introduction in addition to singing exercises and literature for practice. A comparison with Audrey Snyder's

Rene Favaloro was one of the most distinguished surgeons of the 20th century. He was the first to introduce the original technique of aortocoronary bypass grafting, entering the new era of coronary artery disease treatment. Working at the Cleveland Clinic, together with Mason Sones and Effler, he became a member of the medical team which performered the first aortocoronary bypass grafting and showed the functional competence of the new graft. A nonlinear finite element method with eight-noded isoparametric quadrilateral elements is used to predict the behavior of unreinforced masonry structures. The disturbed state concept (DSC) with modified hierarchical single yield surface (HISS) plasticity which is called DSC/HISS-CT is used to characterize the constitutive behavior of masonry in both compression and tension. The model uses two HISS yield surfaces for compressive and tensile behavior. The DSC model allows for the characterization of non-associative behavior through the use of disturbance.

The history of the understanding of the heart shows how far scientific research has come. Experimentation resulted in the scientific discovery of congenital heart disease by Mason Sones, whose work led to the understanding of obstructive coronary artery disease, risk stratification for patients, and subsequently to a road map for revascularization procedures. Werner Forssmann is another significant name, having demonstrated the feasibility of placing catheters in the heart by passing a urethral catheter through his own brachial vein into his right atrium. This chapter focuses on the scientific developments following on from these discoveries.

‘As an aid to diagnosis in ischaemic heart-disease’, Lancet editorialists wrote in 1966, coronary angiography ‘seems at present to offer little that cannot be more easily obtained by much simpler methods, such as good history-taking and electrocardiography’. Since its serendipitous origins at the Cleveland Clinic laboratory of Dr F. Mason Sones in 1958, selective coronary angiography has taken on central importance in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease and characterization of coronary anatomy prior to coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Performance has become simpler and safer, evolving from a brachial artery cut-down approach with stiff, large-calibre multipurpose catheters to percutaneous femoral, radial, and now ulnar approaches with softer, lower-profile catheters specially designed to atraumatically engage the coronary ostia.

Abstract:
Looking back into Southern history, this chapter examines ways Border Formation Narratives disrupted cultural continuity for enslaved Africans, walled out “uncivilized” cultures, extended slavery into contested territories, and created the South’s borders. Examining hegemonic devices and struggles against them, this chapter analyzes early writings by Equiano, Wheatley, and Cabeza de Vaca, and an image of Pocahontas and then focuses on 19th Century border building that identified the Mason-Dixon as marker of Southern nationhood and pushed Native Americans and Hispanic Americans out of the Southern frame to solidify the region as based on polarities of black and white. The chapter examines Ruiz de Burton’s reflections on border circumstances of Mexican-Americans, Hentz’s fictional transformation of a Northern-born woman into a Southerner, and the revisionist history of the composition of the song “Dixie.” There is also discussion of attempts by Haley and Walker, and artist Tom Feelings to reclaim control of communal narratives.

The literature related to microwave and ultrasound working simultaneously is rather infrequent. The reason is obvious: microwave irradiation is of electromagnetic origin while ultrasound is a mechanical vibration energy. Moreover, the optimal settings for ultrasound propagation throughout a reaction media do not coincide with the conditions required for application of microwaves. Therefore, the challenge is to find a way to best combination of these sources of energy into one apparatus to allow researchers to take advantage of the features of each technology.
