Abstract:
We introduce a new method ( Do ppler Ve locity R econstruction or DoVeR), for reconstructing two-component velocity fields from colour Doppler scans. DoVeR employs the streamfunction–vorticity equation, which satisfies mass conservation while accurately approximating the flow rate of rotation. We validated DoVeR using artificial colour Doppler images generated from computational fluid dynamics models of left ventricle (LV) flow. We compare DoVeR against the conventional intraventricular vector flow mapping (iVFM 1D ) and reformulated iVFM (iVFM 2D ). LV model error analysis showed that DoVeR is more robust to noise and probe placement, with noise RMS errors ( nRMSE ) between 3.81% and 6.67%, while the iVFM methods delivered 4.16–24.17% for iVFM 1D and 4.06–400.21% for iVFM 2D . We test the DoVeR and iVFM methods using in vivo mouse LV ultrasound scans. DoVeR yielded more haemodynamically accurate reconstructions, suggesting that it can provide a more reliable approach for robust quantification of cardiac flow.

ABSTRACTThe selected readings in the text reinforce the theoretical and empirical notion that elder abuse is a family affair and redefine the problem as a scientific concept of elder mistreatment. The editors aim “to illuminate causes and consequences of conflict between the aged and their relatives, and to present new research and theory regarding the problem of elder abuse”.Wolf introduces new analytical frameworks to explain five types of abuse and their relationship to four causal factors. Pillemer illustrates caregiver and victim risk factors. The use of separate readings reflects the nonsystematic and isolated nature of research and policy efforts in the field to date, underscoring the strong methodological concern of the text.

Abstract:
SummaryIdeally, the evolutionary models for the precursor of SN 1987 A should account for both the SN properties and the observational constraints for massive stars with relevant mass and composition.Mass loss is an essential property of massive star evolution. Recent parametrisations of mass loss rates for galactic stars cover the whole HR diagram. There are indications that for given L and Teff values, is lower at lower metallicity and therefore is lower in the LMC than in the Galaxy, thus we take with f < 1. Various models of an intitial 20 M⊙ star with f=0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 are constructed (cf. Fig. 1) with a metallicity Z=0.006 and a moderate overshooting dover=0.3 Hp. From these models, we suggest an initial mass on the zero age sequence of 17 to 18 M⊙. The pre-SN location in the HR diagram very much depends on the remaining stellar mass, or more precisely on the mass of the remaining H-rich envelope. A final location at log Teff ≃ 4.2 is obtained for a final mass of about 9.0 M⊙ (cf. Fig.1). Scaled to an initial value of 17 M⊙, this corresponds to a final mass of about 8 M⊙ and a remaining H-rich envelope of a few tenths of a solar mass at most. The stellar surface exhibits CNO equilibrium values with C/N ≃ 0.01 and O/N ≃ 0.1 in mass fraction, and an hydrogen content X (surf) = 0.39. The blue progenitor is obtained for f=0.4, i.e. for -values in the LMC equal to 40% of the galactic values.

Abstract:
Experiments were conducted in two seasons in Dover, Fla. (central Florida), with bare-root and containerized (plug) strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa) transplants to evaluate transplant establishment-period water use, plant growth, and flowering responses in the 3-week transplant establishment period. Strawberry plug plants were established with 290 gal/acre water applied only with the transplant at planting time, while 200,000 gal/acre from microjet or 1 million gal/acre of water from sprinkler irrigation were used to establish bare-root transplants. Root, shoot, and crown dry matter of plug plants rapidly increased during the establishment period, while there was a decline in leaf area and root and crown mass of bare-root plants, even with sprinkler or microjet irrigation. Water applied with the bare-root transplant only at planting was not enough to keep the plant alive during the establishment period. Large plug plants, but not irrigated bare-root plants, began flowering at 3 weeks after planting. Plug plants were used to successfully establish strawberry crops with low water inputs.

Abstract:
Pelagic fishes with an ability to swim in strong bursts have previously been shown to have large size-dependent increases (positive aUometric scaling exponents) in the activities of glycolytic enzymes in white skeletal muscle. This scaling of glycolytic activity has been hypothesized to provide the anaerobic power upporting the size-independence of relative burst swimming speeds (body lengths s−1) in these fishes. This paper presents tests of several predictions of this hypothesis, using different-sized individuals of two pelagic teleosts, the kelp bass (Paralabrax clathratus) and the freshwater rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), and a flatfish, the Dover sole (Microstomus pacificus). In the two pelagic species, an increase in body size was accompanied by an increase in activities in white muscle (i.u.g wet mass ofmuscle−1) of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), an indicator of potential for anaerobic glycolysis, and creatine phosphokinase (CPK), an enzyme that helps maintain stable ATP concentration during muscular activity. Activities of citrate synthase (CS), an indicator of the potential for aerobic metabolism, decreased with size. In the flatfish, activities of all enzymes in white muscle decreased with body size, a trend proposed to reflect lack of adaptive value of strong burst swimming ability in this benthic fish. Activities of LDH and CS were size-independent in brain of flatfish, indicating that the scaling patterns observed in the muscle of this species were related to muscle function, not to common, organism-wide changes with size. In white muscle of P. clathratus, total protein and soluble protein concentrations and buffering capacity increased with body size in parallel, but myofibrillar protein was size-independent. These results suggest that the capacity for anaerobically powered work and the maximal potential to generate force scale only modestly in relation to total body mass and therefore do not appear to be functionally related to the pattern of glycolytic scaling. Thus, these data support the hypothesis that the functional role of the strongly positive scaling of glycolytic enzymes in the white muscle of pelagic fish is to provide increased power during burst swimming in larger-sized fishes.

Abstract:

Women still hold the majority in the pursuit of the aesthetic ideal. The imposition of standards of beauty is a social problem in which maximizes the prejudice and discrimination of those who do not fit these parameters. The standards of beauty and fashion are often unreal, because they suggest a beauty that women are unable to achieve naturally. The standards are unreal because they are created or modified by technologies, computer graphics programs, etcetera. In the same way that discourses are situated and constructed socio-historically, the standards of beauty are as well, so time has a great influence in changing these patterns. Therefore, because there is no concept of absolute and universal beauty, it submits to the current culture and society. The "different body", the one that does not fit into the imposed standards, is rarely portrayed in advertising. Hence, the company Unilever, which owns the Dove brand, used the "different body" as a marketing strategy in one of its advertising campaigns. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine: how the "different body" was portrayed in such campaign, as it used ordinary women, and also featured narratives of these models. Understanding that advertising as a powerful mass media can promote models of identification and behavior, and may strengthen or break stereotypes, this work seeks to analyze: how "different body" was portrayed in such publicity, both in verbal and imagistic mode; which potentially ideological meanings articulated from the discourses; and if the discourses reinforce or negate the current aesthetic standards. Our analytical work is grounded in two theories: Textual analysis for social research by Norman Fairclough (2003) and the Visual Grammar by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996), which assisted in textual and multimodal analysis, respectively. We emphasize that the purpose of this paper is a critical analysis that aims to encourage reading and critical interpretation of discourses, especially from the media, since the discourses are invested with ideologies. We concluded in the advertisements analyzed, the images and narratives were used as strategies to sell their products, and the debate initially proposed by Dove had the intention to break stereotypes, yet in fact did not succeed in the end. The "different body" was portrayed as the imperfect body, as inverse to the ideal body.

Abstract:
During the past years, the Portuguese retail mass market had been witnessing some changes in the consumers shopping habits. There are several reasons that might explain this fact. One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is the financial crisis, forcing consumers to change some of their habits. Over the years the retail mass market has been changing and adapting to new trends. In general, brands are enlarging their product portfolios in order to face competition and to try to reach every consumer segment – decreasing the product differentiation. Brands are now challenged to stand out in categories where sometimes products’ benefits are very alike. Given the decrease in product differentiation and the Portuguese consumer adaptation to the economic environment, the number of private labels purchased has been increasing. As a consequence, the variation in the perceived quality between NBs and PLBs is decreasing, resulting into the use of price as the deciding factor. Despite the veracity of price being the ultimate deciding factor in some categories (such as food), in the skin cleansing category the same cannot be concluded. As a market leader in the category, Dove represents an example of success in an industry where wining a price war is crucial. This research tries to unveil some of reasons behind this success. Much of the success is due to the nature of each category. This nature will vary according to variables such as risk of purchase, price consciousness and others which will lead to a higher propensity towards national brands.

Abstract:
This introduction raises two fundamental questions: the first one tries to give a definition of what a peace camp is. What we call “the peace movement” in Israel is, in fact, an indistinct galaxy, a world that subdivides into a multitude of organizations and individuals, some highly prominent, and others completely unknown. It is a complex realm, crisscrossed by multiple currents that are often at variance with one another. It resembles no other peace movement in the world. Four main tendencies can be distinguished within this heterogeneous movement in Israel. The second question is that of the decline in the movement's capacity to organize mass demonstrations. Some argue that it is a result of a host of sociological changes that have come about in Israeli society. But the weight of sociological factors is secondary to emotional factors. The feeling of fear inspired by the Palestinians, the lack of confidence in the “other” that a great majority of Israelis refuse to consider a “partner for peace” weighs far more heavily than any sociological variable. This is one of the book's central arguments.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Rilke is often cited as the first major modern poet to address and in some part orientate his poetry toward the animal. Reading II.11 of Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus and concerned by the manner in which it condones the killing of doves, this essay suggests a wound within Rilke’s work occasioned by a radical tension between his allegiance to poetry per se and his concern for animals. Arguing that this sonnet is perhaps the most Orphic of the Sonnets, it locates Rilke’s use of the Orpheus myth within a broader necrologocentricity in twentieth-century thought. It asks whether this preoccupation with death may, as an excuse wound, serve to mask a deeper wound that may be occasioned by our suppression, relegation, and exploitation of animals. In order to free poetry to address this wound some ancient bonds within us may need to be broken or reconfigured, including our treasured bond with Orpheus.

Abstract:
In this work we investigate the stability of parallel-plate electrostatic MEMS resonators using a delayed feedback controller. Two case studies are investigated: a capacitive sensor made of cantilever beams with a proof mass at their tip and a clamped-clamped microbeam. Dover-cliff integrity curves and basin-of-attraction analysis are used for the stability assessment of the frequency response of the resonators for several scenarios of positive and negative gain in the controller. It is found that, in the case of a positive gain, a velocity or a displacement feedback controller can be used to effectively enhance the stability of the resonators. This is confirmed by an increase in the area of the safe basin of attraction and in shifting the Dover-cliff curve upward. On the other hand, it is shown that a negative gain can significantly weaken the stability of the resonators. This can be of useful use in MEMS for actuation applications, such as in the case of capacitive switches, to lower the activation voltage of these devices and to ensure their trigger under all initial conditions.

CONCLUSION : Les nouvelles technologies font évoluer nos pratiques.
