Abstract:
Targeted Energy Transfer is a resonance phenomenon in coupled anharmonic oscillators. In this thesis we investigate if the concept of Targeted Energy Transfer is applicable to Bose-Einsteain condensates in optical lattices. The model used to describe Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices is based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Targeted Energy Transfer in these systems would correspond to energy being transferred from one lattice site to another. We also try to expand the concept of Targeted Energy Transfer to a system consisting of three sites, where one of the sites are considered

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: We use Hanbury-Brown Twiss interferometry to determine Bose-Einstein correlations in the transverse and longitudinal directions. By using these two directions, we are able to determine the shape of the pion emitting source. The analysis is done with the UA1 (1985) data for pp collisions at Vs = 630 GeV. Two frames of reference, namely the laboratory frame and the Longitudinal Center-of-Mass System (LCMS) are used. A fit to a two-dimensional Gaussian parametrization yields good results. Abstract:
In this thesis, the stability of the family of subextremal Kerr-Newman space- times is studied in the case of linear scalar perturbations. That is, nondegenerate energy bounds (NEB) and integrated local energy decay (ILED) results are proved for solutions of the wave equation on the domain of outer communications. The main obstacles to the proof of these results are superradiance, trapping and their interaction. These difficulties are surmounted by localising solutions of the wave equation in phase space and applying the vector field method. Miraculously, as in the Kerr case, superradiance and

We investigate the reaction path followed by Heavy Ion Collisions with exotic nuclear beams at low energies. The evolution of the system is described by a Stochastic Mean Field transport equation (SMF), where two parameterizations for the density dependence of symmetry energy (Asysoft and Asystiff) are implemented, allowing one to explore the sensitivity of the results to this ingredient of the nuclear interaction. We report the properties of the prompt dipole radiation, produced via a collective bremsstrahlung mechanism, in fusion reactions with exotic beams. We show that the gamma yield is s

This thesis describes the development of a generic model for predicting the emissions of organic compounds from materials used in the manufacture of various goods and products. Many products contain organic substances that are not bound to the matrix formed by their constituent materials and are thus able to dissociate from the material and become transferred into the surrounding environment. A wide range of materials and products are used in modern societies, and many compounds deriving from these materials are regarded as emerging pollutants in both indoor and outdoor environments. Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterised by excessive production of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). This leads to rheumatoid cachexia, a condition characterised by increased resting energy expenditure (REE) and loss of fat-free mass (FFM) leading to functional disability, decreased strength and balance. The aims of this research work was to: a) to develop a new REE equation in order to continuously monitor abnormal changes in REE in the RA population, b) to investigate if smoking further enhances hypermetabolism and c) to examine if the new anti-TNFα medication reverses this

However, the models are often computationally intensive, requiring a lot of time to perform parametric studies. For example, if the physi
