The solar wind interaction with an icy comet is studied through a model problem. A hybrid simulation is done of a box with evenly distributed water ions and protons, where initially the water ions are stationary, and protons move with the speed of the solar wind. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the interaction between the two species through the convective electric field, and focus is on early acceleration of pick-up ions, and deflection of the solar wind. It is relevant to the cometary case, because it enables study of the physics of this interaction, without involving other mecha

The changing distribution of surface mass (oceans, atmosphere, hydrology and cryosphere) causes detectable changes to the solid Earth’s shape on timescales from hours to millennia. Transient changes in Earth’s shape can be readily identified, but the tectonic plate movements and Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) will also influence the secular trends of Earth’s shape. To analyse secular trends in surface mass loading, these two confounding factors must be quantified. Because these types of bridges are more flexible than the other types, they are more susceptible to wind excitation and need some devices to control the aerodynamic effects. Among these devices, tuned mass dampers (TMDs) have been installed in some existed bridges, and their performance is proven to be effective against wind-induced vibrations. However, previous studi

Abstract:
The presence of human pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment is now becoming a well-established fact. The identified problems associated with their presence include the fact that these compounds are biologically active, some of them are toxic in nature, and a number of compounds have potential to foster and maintain drug resistant microorganisms. They are discharged into the aquatic environment from a variety of sources, but mainly by the excretion of incompletely metabolized pharmaceuticals by individuals into the wastewater. This situation makes finding a source-control strategy difficul

The first one is the extra damping in liquid phase that causes the mechanical quality factor drop to a level that may induce unstable oscillation frequency. The second one is the self oscillation zero phase condition will be lost due to the shunt capacitance effect. In this study, a novel phase compensated quartz crystal oscillation circuit is proposed and will try to resolve these problems. According to the traditional theoretical analys

It can not only stabilize the spray phenomenon but also provide to the long time mass spectrometer measurement. The cotton can transfer the volatile solvent to the brush tip by capillary phenomenon. Electrically spraying can be done by applying high voltage at the brush tip. The result of this electro-spray method is better than traditional chromatography paper in PS-MS because the brush tip

Based on the similar theory with paper-spray mass spectrometry, the analytes were evaporated and then ionized through the surface of a small nylon writing-brush. A part of the nylon writing-brush was embedded inside a 3D-printed plastic cell, in which methanol was provided for rinsing the brush by means of capillary action. Although various brushes were examined, we finally selected nylon fiber in this study. This is beca

Surface mass loads come in many different varieties, including the oceans, atmosphere, rivers, lakes, glaciers, ice caps, and snow fields. The loads migrate over Earth's surface on time scales that range from less than a day to many thousand years. The weights of the shifting loads exert normal forces on Earth's surface. Since the Earth is not perfectly rigid, the applied pressure deforms the shape of the solid Earth in a manner controlled by the material properties of Earth's interior. One of the most prominent types of surface mass loading, ocean tidal loading (OTL), comes from the periodic

Objectives: Determine the effect of contraction type and intensity, inertial loading, and visual feedback on various measures of hand tremor in subjects with essential tremor. Methods: Study 1. Twenty-three ET subjects and 22 controls held their hand in an outstretched position while supporting various submaximal loads (no-load, 5%, 15% and 25% 1-repetition maximum). Hand postural tremor and wrist extensor neuromuscular activity (EMG) were recorded. Study 2. Materials with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architectures exhibit attractive mechanical, energy conversion and thermal radiative cooling properties not found in their bulk counterparts. However, implementation of hierarchically structured 3D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is widely deemed not possible, by the lack of manufacturing solutions that overcome the hierarchy, quality, and scalability dilemma. Here we report dewetting-driven destabilization (DDD) process that enables simple, template-free, high throughput printing of 3D architected MoS2 Foam with hierarchy spanning sev
