Abstract:
The inclusion of rotation as an ingredient in radiation pressure driven stellar wind models is a nontrivial undertaking. Those bold enough to attempt an investigation of its likely importance include Castor (1979), Abbott (1980), and Marlborough & Zamir (1984), whose work shows that the critical point is expected to move away from the stellar surface with increasing rotation. Observationally, the surface mass flux is predicted to be insensitive to rotation, but the wind acceleration is expected to be less than in a nonrotating star and the terminal velocity smaller.

Abstract:
Background and aims: Seasonal differences in vine yield need to be managed to ensure appropriate fruit composition at harvest. Differences in yield are the result of changes in vine management (e.g., the number of nodes retained after harvest) and weather conditions (in particular, temperature) at key vine development stages. Early yield prediction enables growers to manage vines to achieve target yields and prepare the required infrastructure for the harvest. Methods and results: Bunch mass data was collected during the 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons from a commercial vineyard on the Wairau Plains, Marlborough, New Zealand (41o2’23”S; 173o51’15”E). A Bayesian growth model, assuming a double sigmoidal curve, was used to predict the yield at the end of each season. The accuracy of the prediction was investigated using the Monte-Carlo simulation for yield prediction at various growth stages assuming different prior information. Conclusion: The results show that the model is sensitive to prior assumption and that having a non-informative prior may be more beneficial than having an informative prior based on one unusual year.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Local guidelines exist in Nelson to assist general practitioners (GPs) in supporting overweight and obese patients with weight loss and improvements in their overall health. This audit measures whether this role is fulfilled in a Very Low Cost Access practice in Nelson, in which 76% of enrolled patients reside in New Zealand social deprivation index quintiles 4 and 5. AIM This study measured whether Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Health Pathways and the Ministry of Health Clinical Guidelines are followed in identifying risk and initiating management, including treatment of additional risk factors, lifestyle modification and dietitian referral. RESULTS Although limited by sample size and consecutive patient screening methodology, the results of this study indicate that overweight and obesity rates in this practice are comparable with the national average, with Māori and Pacific Island populations more likely to be affected compared to their New Zealand European counterparts. Of the patients who had their body mass index recorded, 65% were overweight or obese. Risk factors were assessed and treated in all, green prescriptions were issued in 4%, and 23% were referred to a dietitian. DISCUSSION Audit findings were presented at an intervention session where strategies for improvement were considered including routine waist circumference measurement, dietitian referral, exercise on prescription and providing individualised tailored approaches that integrate patients’ cultural and social context. While risk factors are being managed appropriately, improvements can be made in identifying high-risk patients, promoting lifestyle modifications and early dietitian referral.

Abstract:
Abstract Context.—Morphology training and certification provided by the manufacturer is required before laboratories are allowed to prepare and interpret liquid-based cytology (LBC) gynecologic slides. Whether this certification is associated with improved LBC interpretation performance is not known. Objective.—To determine whether LBC certification correlates with performance. Design.—The results of the College of American Pathologists Interlaboratory Comparison Program in Cervicovaginal Cytopathology for the year 2004 were reviewed. During this year a question on the answer form asked participants whether they were certified in LBC preparations. Participant responses were analyzed at 2 levels of agreement with the reference diagnosis of unknown glass slides mailed quarterly. Results.—For cytotechnologists and pathologists, participants who were LBC certified had a significantly lower total discordant rate to series than participants who were not certified for validated LBC ThinPrep (Cytyc Corp, Marlborough, Mass) preparations (P < .001 for both groups). The results were similar for validated conventional preparations for pathologists but not for cytotechnologists. The differences were present across most individual diagnostic series. Differences were most striking for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. In addition, cytotechnologists and pathologists who were certified had a significantly lower total discordant rate to the exact diagnosis for validated LBC ThinPrep slides than those who were not certified (discordant rates for cytotechnologists, 14.14% and 23.36%, respectively, P < .001; for pathologists, 15.99% and 24.07%, respectively, P < .001). Conclusion.—Although not all confounding factors were excluded in this study, LBC certification is associated with a significantly lower discordant rate to both series and exact diagnosis for validated LBC ThinPrep preparations.

Abstract:
Luminous Blue Variables are among the brightest objects and lie at the Humphreys-Davidson empirical limit of maximum luminosity (Lamers 1986b). A distinct feature of these stars is the higher rate of mass loss and the relatively lower terminal velocity than for other stars of the same spectral type. LBV stars show moderate photometric variations with ΔV ⋍ 1 — 2m. They have higher Ṁ and lower v∞ when they are brighter (i.e., have a low Teff). These stars probable represent a short phase in the evolution along the chain O → Of → LBV → WR. After investigating the dynamics of the wind of P Cygni, Lamers (1986a) concluded that the wind was best explained by radiation pressure arising from a large number of optically thin lines in the Balmer continuum. Recently Chen & Marlborough (1993) applied this driving mechanism to Be stars. Application of this mechanism to P Cygni has been criticized by Pauldrach & Puls (1990) who found that P Cygni's wind is driven by radiation pressure due to both optically thick (60 %) and optically thin lines and that it gives rise to the typical β velocity law. In our calculations we used a method developed by Vilkoviskij and Tambovtseva (1992). We assume that Teff, M*, R*, Ṁ and initial velocity v0 at the stellar surface are given. The input parameters have been taken from Lamers (1986b). All four LBV's (except P Cygni) are considered in their maximum phase, i.e., when their winds are expected to be driven by radiation pressure in optically thin lines. A constant value of vo = 20 km/s has been adopted. Force-multiplier parameters k and δ have been taken from Abbott (1982). If we assume that the acceleration of the wind is due to optically thin lines of metals in the Balmer continuum, than we must have α ≪ 1 (Abbott 1982). We stress that there are no calculations available to determine that quantity in the optically thin limit. We will estimate α later for P Cygni but for other stars we will use a as a free parameter. Note that α depends on the ratio of optically thick to optically thin lines in the wind. Basically k depends on the number of lines that produce radiation pressure and in our case a value of k can be even larger than given by Abbott (1982). The results of our calculations are presented in Table I. We give the values of v∞ calculated for the indicated values of input parameters. The terminal velocities are in good agreement with the observational data (Lamers 1986b).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. Here we examine the landscape of New Zealand's Marlborough Fault System (MFS), where the Australian and Pacific plates obliquely collide, in order to study landscape evolution and the controls on fluvial patterns at a long-lived plate boundary. We present maps of drainage anomalies and channel steepness, as well as an analysis of the plan-view orientations of rivers and faults, and we find abundant evidence of structurally controlled drainage that we relate to a history of drainage capture and rearrangement in response to mountain-building and strike-slip faulting. Despite clear evidence of recent rearrangement of the western MFS drainage network, rivers in this region still flow parallel to older faults, rather than along orthogonal traces of younger, active strike-slip faults. Such drainage patterns emphasize the importance of river entrenchment, showing that once rivers establish themselves along a structural grain, their capture or avulsion becomes difficult, even when exposed to new weakening and tectonic strain. Continued flow along older faults may also indicate that the younger faults have not yet generated a fault damage zone with the material weakening needed to focus erosion and reorient rivers. Channel steepness is highest in the eastern MFS, in a zone centered on the Kaikōura ranges, including within the low-elevation valleys of main stem rivers and at tributaries near the coast. This pattern is consistent with an increase in rock uplift rate toward a subduction front that is locked on its southern end. Based on these results and a wealth of previous geologic studies, we propose two broad stages of landscape evolution over the last 25 million years of orogenesis. In the eastern MFS, Miocene folding above blind thrust faults generated prominent mountain peaks and formed major transverse rivers early in the plate collision history. A transition to Pliocene dextral strike-slip faulting and widespread uplift led to cycles of river channel offset, deflection and capture of tributaries draining across active faults, and headward erosion and captures by major transverse rivers within the western MFS. We predict a similar landscape will evolve south of the Hope Fault, as the locus of plate boundary deformation migrates southward into this region with time.

Abstract:
Creating a representative database of the British Empire is a difficult problem. How can one create a database that accurately reflects the issues of nearly one quarter of the world's land mass and over four hundred years of human history? Adam Matthew Publications has admirably taken on this task. Empire Online, an electronic collection of over eight hundred editorial essays, manuscripts, printed works, ephemera, and other materials provides an excellent starting point for undergraduates into the multifaceted world of British imperial studies.
