Abstract:
Competing definitions of objectivity have shaped the racial history of American journalism and continue to structure how racial issues are reported in digital media today. The black press historically aimed to enlarge the professional meaning of objectivity, hoping to invigorate the United States' democratic impulse. In contrast, the white press aimed to impose a narrow definition of objectivity that served to endorse a discriminatory status quo. Black journalists and black media remain relevant in the digital age because both continue to articulate a racial perspective frequently absent or marginalized in mass media. Despite integration, though, the collapse of journalism’s profitability amid digital transformation means black journalists continue to confront workplace concerns familiar to those encountered by their predecessors.

Political violence, including terrorism, can be regarded as a form of (distorted) communication, in which media spectacles play an integral role. Conversely, mass-mediated communication can be regarded as a form of violence, and even terror, in several respects. Media are often propagandistic facilitators to state terror. More broadly, they may help to cultivate a political climate of fear and authoritarianism, contributing to conflict-escalating feedback loops. Even more broadly, beyond media representations, dominant media institutions are arguably embedded in relations of global economic, social, and cultural inequality—constituting a form of structural violence. Notwithstanding its democratic potential, the Internet does not comprise a clear alternative in practice, and neither censorship of terrorist spectacles nor the intensified pursuit of dominant forms of journalistic “objectivity” offer viable ways to reduce the media's imbrication with violence. Three potentially more productive strategies explored in this chapter include reforming the media field from within through the paradigm of Peace Journalism, supporting the development of alternative and community media, and building movements for media reform and democratization.

Abstract:
Originally, digital technologies were contemplated by public opinion as instruments which serve to make from this life a safer place. While over recent decades, the digital revolution was oriented to discuss to what extent humans being are credible and agents who can reach objectivity, no less true was that some mass-media paved the pathways for the rise of a new atmosphere of terror, which triggered after 9/11. Doubtless, terrorism, ISIS and 9/11 were the main allegories for the society of consumers. This opens the doors for a paradoxical situation, simply because viewers are enmeshed in a strange fascination for news disseminating crimes, terrorist attacks, calamities and disasters. In earlier research, we have dubbed to this new stage of capitalism, as Thana-Capitalism. In this respect, once conceived as a sign of weakness, consuming others' death implies an aura of superiority for those who have been not touched by death. In the rise of Thana Capitalism, fear and death seem to be two touchstones that mediate between citizens and their institutions.

Abstract:
This chapter will treat transatlantic journalism as a product of multi-directional borrowing (even if not always symmetrical), within the context of a wider ‘Anglo-world’ that was marked by migrations and tours, as well as within a multi-media environment. Rather than an “Americanized” British press, what emerges is a shared journalistic culture that retains important pockets of difference. The chapter will begin by tracing the transatlantic emergence of a mass circulation press, and the bifurcation of journalistic styles along lines of status. Beginning with the emergence of Britain’s ‘new journalism’ in the 1880s, it will show that while certain popular forms (interviews, informal tone, brevity) made their way from the United States to London, others, such as crusades and the demotic voice, had significant British roots. Furthermore, transformations associated with the new journalism quickly made their way to Ireland, where they blended with nationalist politics. American elite political journalism in this era was often explicitly influenced by British models e.g. the New Republic (1914) and various suffrage periodicals. Conversely, British journalistic norms never embraced the American concept of ‘objectivity’, continuing deep into the twentieth century to emphasize an idea of ‘independence’ that was fully compatible with partisanship.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the engagement of Kawabata Yasunari's novel The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa with the language of earthquake reconstruction as it reached a climax in the late 1920s. In the latter half of the decade, the major Japanese newspapers sought to track the progress of post-earthquake reconstruction efforts through a language of science and objectivity. These reports collectively announced and anticipated the finalization of these efforts in the spring of 1930 when municipal and national government bureaus had planned an extravagant festival to celebrate the successful renovation of the “imperial city.” The serialization of Kawabata's novel spanned the time period both before and after this festival with a suggestive hiatus during the few months in which the festival actually took place. The novel assimilated the language of this mass media reportage, reproducing statistical analyses and even reprising some of the exact language being used to describe the new bridges and parks. But the story is rendered through a kaleidoscopic narrative that shuffles and reshuffles a bric-a-brac of details and events into momentary patterns of coherence. Ultimately, Kawabata's novel subverts national attempts to suppress the traumas of the recent past, insisting on an alternate way of narrating the psychology of the city.
