Abstract:
Thesis, understood as the final product of university education, is a new study subject of increasing importance due to its contributions to science and the production of new knowledge. This article provides a detailed panorama of the characteristics of themes, methodology and quality of bibliographical sources found in undergraduate and master's theses on education. The documentary analysis is based on a sample of 86 undergraduate theses and 37 master's theses belonging to a private university in metropolitan Lima. While undergraduate and master's theses differ in aims and scope, the results yielded differences in indicators related to theme and research methodology, such not being the case regarding indicators on the use of bibliographic sources.

Abstract:
Thesis (MCurr)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Background: Research supervision forms an essential part of higher education. The emergence of global trends in the production and dissemination of knowledge is compelling universities and university of technologies in South Africa to become more market-orientated, competitive and entrepreneurial. The supervision process is vital to successful completion of the research component of master’s degrees and consequently increase throughput in higher education. Successful and meaningful supervision contribute largely to mutual satisfaction and professional development between supervisors and students. Good supervision should be an integral component of quality research governance. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore research supervision needs and experiences of the master’s students in nursing. Methodology: A descriptive phenomenological research design was used with a qualitative research approach. A non-probability, purposive sampling method was used to select respondents in this study. The target population includes all nursing science master’s students enrolled at University of Stellenbosch in the past three years (N=109). A sample size of twelve students was included in the study, whereby all twelve face to face interviews were conducted using the semi-structured interview guide. The inclusion criterium for students was that they were all currently registered students who initially enrolled for the Masters in Nursing degree program between 2008 and 2010 in the division of Nursing at Stellenbosch University. Results: Eight themes arose from the interviews. These included: isolation; lack of skills/ time management; family dynamics/personal circumstances; supervisor support; student and supervisor roles and responsibilities; workplace dynamics and support; financial and institutional support and implications; and motivation to complete studies. Conclusions: Successful completion of research undertaken on postgraduate level and supervision at a master’s level depend on a healthy and productive relationship between the supervisor and the student. Exploring and implementing the guidance and suggestions in this paper will assist students in considering supervision preferences. This in turn will result in achieving a good supervisory relationship which is the key to successful master studies.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Agtergrond: Navorsing toesighouding vorm ‘n belangrike deel van hoer onderwys. Smee, Kevin M. "Role of Hdac3 in Murine Coronary Vessel Development: A Master's Thesis." eScholarship@UMMS, 2014. https://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/766.

Full text
Abstract:
Coronary vessel development is a crucial part of heart development requiring the interplay of the epicardial, myocardial and endocardial layers of the heart for proper formation. Coronary vascularization is regulated by a host of transcription factors further regulated by chromatin remodeling enzymes, including Histone Deacetylases (HDACs). To investigate the functions of HDACs in coronary vascular development, we have deleted Hdac3 in endocardial cells using Cre LoxP technology. Endocardial cell-‐specific deletion of Hdac3 results in aberrant coronary vessel formation and complete postnatal lethality. We have thus shown that Hdac3 is a critical regulator of the coronary vascular development pathway.

Darling, Chad E. "Hypertensive Acute Decompensated Heart Failure Presentations: On the Decline? : A Master's Thesis." eScholarship@UMMS, 2014. https://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/720.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The initial systolic blood pressure (SBP) in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) can be used as a guide when choosing specific pharmacologic treatments by helping identify the underlying type of HF (e.g., HF with preserved ejection fraction). Clinical experience and research data from our medical center suggests that AHF with elevated SBP may be presenting less frequently than in the past. This may call into question the utility of initial SBP as a clinical guide. The goal of this Master’s Thesis is to test the hypothesis that the frequency of AHF patients with a SBP>160mmhg has declined over time. Methods: This observational study compares data from 4 cohorts of adult patients admitted with AHF in central MA. Data were obtained from a contemporary (2011-2013) study of patients with AHF as well as from the 1995, 2000, 2006 Worcester Heart Failure Study (WHFS) cohorts. The Framingham criteria the diagnostic criterion for AHF. The main outcome was the proportion of patients with AHF with a SBP > 160 mmHg who presented in each of the 4 study cohorts and was examined by multivariate logistic regression. Results: 2,366 patients comprised the study population. The average age was 77 years, 55% were female, 94% white, and 75% had prior HF. In 1995 33.6% of AHF patients had a SBP >160 mmHg compared to 19.5% in 2011-2013 (p160 mmHg in 2006 (0.64, (0.42-0.96)) and 2011-13 (0.46, (0.28-0.74)). Conclusion: The proportion of patients with AHF and an initial SBP >160 mmHg has significantly declined over time. This may warrant a reexamination of the utility of SBP to inform diagnosis and treatment in patients with AHF.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to replicate and expand upon the survey research by Erffmeyer and Mendel (1990) on the perceived relevance of graduate training in industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology at the terminal master’s level. A review of the literature discussed core competencies, as well as the advantages of internship experiences and thesis requirements. Results indicated that graduates view their training as well targeted towards knowledge and skills they regard as useful at their internship, first job, and current position. Results also indicated that graduates viewed their internship experiences as highly beneficial and worthwhile experiences, regardless of their supervisor. Results additionally indicated that graduates value the thesis requirement significantly more than current students and view the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with completing a thesis as high in usefulness. Implications and limitations of these findings are discussed, and directions for future research on master’s level I-O training are discussed.

Psoinos, Charles M. "Predictors of Post-injury Mortality in Elderly Patients with Trauma: A Master's Thesis." eScholarship@UMMS, 2016. http://escholarship.umassmed.edu/gsbs_diss/863.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Traumatic injury remains a major cause of mortality in the US. Older Americans experience lower rates of injury and higher rates of death at lower injury severity than their younger counterparts. The objectives of this study were to explore pre-injury factors and injury patterns that are associated with post-discharge mortality among injured elderly surviving index hospitalization. Methods: We queried a 5% random sample of Medicare beneficiaries (n=2,002,420) for any hospitalization with a primary ICD-9 diagnosis code for injury. Patients admitted without urgent/emergent admission were excluded, as well as patients presenting from inpatient hospitalization or rehabilitation. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality. Patients were categorized into three mortality groups: death within 0-30 days, 31-90 days, or 91- 365 days post-discharge from the index hospitalization. These groups were compared with those who survived greater than one year post-discharge. Univariate tests of association and multivariable logistic regression models were utilized to identify factors associated with mortality during the 3 examined periods. Results: 83,439 elderly patients (4.2%) were admitted with new injuries. 63,628 met inclusion criteria. 1,936 patients (3.0%) died during their index hospitalization, 2,410 (3.8%) died within 0-30 days, 3,084 (4.8%) died within 31-90 days, and 5,718 (9.0%) died within 91- 365 days after discharge. In multivariable adjusted models, advanced age, male sex, and higher Elixhauser score were associated with post-discharge mortality. The presence of critical injury had the greatest effect on mortality early after injury (0-30 days, OR 1.81, CI 1.64-2.00). Discharge to anywhere other than home without services was associated with an increased odds of dying. Conclusions: Socio-demographic characteristics, disposition, and co-morbid factors were the strongest predictors of post-discharge mortality. Efforts to reduce injury-related mortality should focus on injury prevention and modification of co-morbidities.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The barriers in accessing healthcare for gay, lesbian and bisexuals individuals are not well explored. These challenges as well as a lack of knowledge concerning this understudied group has prompted the Institute of Medicine to create a research agenda to build a foundational understanding of gay, lesbian and bisexual health and the barriers they encounter.1 the primary aim of this study will be to compare the differences in health care access and utilization between gay/lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual individuals using a large, nationally representative dataset of the U.S. population. METHODS: Data from 2001 to 2012 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was pooled. Using logistic regression, we calculated the unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios of having health insurance, having a routine place and seeing a provider at least one in the past year. RESULTS: We found that gay men were more likely to have health insurance coverage (ORadj:2.13 95%CI: 1.15,3.92), while bisexual men were at a small disadvantage in having health insurance coverage (ORadj:0.82 95%CI: 0.46,1.46). Bisexual men were more likely to have received health care in the past 12 months (ORadj:3.11 95%CI: 1.74,5.55). Lesbian women were less likely to have health insurance coverage (ORadj-lesbian:0.58 95%CI: 0.34,0.97). CONCLUSION: This study contributed to the limited knowledge on understanding the health care access and utilization among gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals, which was classified as a high priority by the Institute of Medicine. Expanding health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act and Universal Partnership Coverage may reduce the disparities among gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立彰化師範大學<br>工業教育與技術學系<br>94<br>The purpose of this research was to examine the inclination of academic research writing pertaining to knowledge management (KM) in this country. The span for investigation was set from 1985 to 2004 with a total of 1800 master’s theses. Via content analysis and in-depth classification, the researcher explored the status quo and developmental trends of KM in terms of basic data, research subjects, research methods, and the industrial categories acquired from the selected theses. Numerous publications related to “knowledge management” were gathered from various sources. Two major categories were delimited: “management technology”, with a total of 1327 theses, and “information technology” with 473 theses in total. Most theses fell into the information technology category between 1985 and 1997. After 1998, theses on the topic of management technology began to emerge. From 1999 to 2004, the output of management technology theses reached a peak as high as 60% in all KM theses each year. The researches of management technology lay emphasis on KM process, knowledge sharing environment, and customer relation management (CRM). On the other hand, data warehouse and mining, groupware, and e-Learning environments are the main research themes for the information technology theses. In terms of academic categorization, 49.06% of the total KM theses were found in business management sector, while 28.83% of KM theses were categorized as information related. The rest were small percentages with 8% in engineering, 3.17% in social sciences, and 1.22% in the other categories respectively. The results showed that the research methods applied by researchers the most were survey, case study, and the system demonstration method. The most favored research subjects were selected from the public administration, military, and education sector (25.11%). The hierarchy was followed by manufacturing industry (18.33%) and information/ telecommunication industry (18%). Evidently these industries demand more extensive level of knowledge management. A number of conclusions were drawn from the findings: 1. There has been an incremental trend regarding the quantity and subjects of theses written about KM. 2. KM has been interdisciplinary. While few were KM specialized experts, most KM thesis writers were from other academic domains. 3. Among other topics, 65.03% of the management technology research were on knowledge management process, followed by knowledge sharing environments (13.34%), and customer knowledge management (8.6%). Other topics such as knowledge maps, community management, learning within organization, and externalization of tacit knowledge, have increased notably. More than half (50.34%) of researchers in management technology utilized questionnaires as the research instrument. 4. Data warehousing and data mining shared about one fifth (20.72%) of all information technology category, which was kept abreast by groupware (20.3%), and followed by digital learning (16.07%). Other up-and-coming topics were on automatic sorting systems, data retrieving systems, web entry systems, and document management systems. More than half (57.72%) of researchers in information technology employed the system demonstration method. Keywords:Knowledge Management, Content Analysis, Knowledge Sharing, Data Mining

Abstract:
碩士<br>世新大學<br>公共關係暨廣告學研究所(含碩專班)<br>94<br>This research involves four areas: (1) a summary based on the content coding of the research development and trends in Taiwan relating to corporate image; (2) a description from the point of view of applied science to examine the contexts within which the studies on corporate image are generated; (3) an analysis as well as suggestions from the perspective of paradigm modes to point out the theoretical foundations which informed the studies under investigation. Based on content analysis this research offers a meta-exposition of eighty-three doctoral dissertations and master’s theses with topics related to corporate image posted on the Taiwanese on-line database. This research reveals that corporate image studies in Taiwan are conducted mainly by researchers from disciplines related to design and management on topics ranging from corporate identity, patterns of consumer satisfaction, and the visual logos of enterprises. In terms of paradigms there is an emphasis on quantitative and variable studies. There appears to be a shortage of researches using qualitative and holistic approaches. This paper concludes with a proposal calling for researches to be done from the perspectives of public relations and through the use of other methodologies.
