One of the dominant features of the late 20th and early 21st century academic debates on the nature of history is a curious form of radicalism both in the ranks of defenders of traditional approaches to history/historiography and eloquent champions of postmodern theories. These debates will provide the context for my reading of Steedman’s Master and Servant, which probes disciplinary boundaries of history and fiction in order to explore the unhistoricised ways of love and labour in 18th century industrial Yorkshire. AbstractThe article deals with one of the under-researched themes of Indian history, which is the history of domestic servants. Thinking about servants raises two fundamental questions: who were they and what did domestic service mean? The identities of a servant as a contract wage earner or a person either belonging as a member or tied to the family through fictive/constructed claims of kinship were not mutually exclusive. Servants' identity existed in a continuum running from ‘free’ waged coolie on the one hand to ‘unfree’ slave on the other. The article traces the history of domestic servan

This study delves into the immediate critical response to Samuel Richardson‟s 1740 novel “Pamela,” which became highly popular for portraying a maidservant embodying peak levels of moral purity. Henry Fielding stands out as a significant critic of “Pamela,” and this paper scrutinizes his counter-narratives, “Shamela” (1741) and “Joseph Andrews” (1742). Fielding, along with other critics, perceived “Pamela” as a disruption to the established norms of master-servant and upper-lower class dynamics prevalent during the 18th century. Although the tale of Sweeney Todd is one with significant cultural resonance, little has been written about the text itself, The String of Pearls. This article argues that the text engages with anxieties about class conflict through a narrative that enacts exaggerated versions of various interactions. In the nineteenth century, critics objected to the cheap fiction pejoratively known as penny dreadfuls, asserting that the genre’s exciting tales of bloodshed, villainy, and mayhem would seduce readers to lives of debauchery and crime, but I argue that this concern about cheap fiction was not for

Few subjects have been discussed as extensively as the place of literacy in the development process. Yet, there is no clear consensus regarding definitions, levels, policies, methods or consequences. As a first step, a model is identified and used as a basis for the analysis of adult literacy's role in development. Literacy is seen as part of an integrated approach to development, being subordinate to overall educational goals. Literacy from this perspective is stripped of its mystique, allowing for a more realistic analysis of its role in rural development. After a review of issues, views and

Class was not fully being negotiated in this period, in fact little change was visible. Fer example intimacy, such as that between the lady’s maid and her mistress, meant that class confrontation

This thesis serves to highlight the significance of food and diet in the servant problem narrative of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Britain and the role of food in master-servant relationships as a source of conflict. Employers customarily provided regular meals, food, drink, or board wages and tea money to their domestic servants in addition to an annual salary, yet food and meals often resulted in contention as evidenced by contemporary criticism and increased calls for legi

Carman sees in Râmânuja’s discussion of the master (úesî)/servant (úesa) relationship the most important understandings concerning the hierarchy between the Supreme Person and the devotee. Carmen argues that in this devotional relationship there is a point at which the distinction between the master and the servant is dissolved, and mutual dependence is revealed. This paper focuses on
