Abstract:
The expanding potential for the dissemination and archiving of aphorisms is explored in this practice-based research thesis. An aphorism is a short statement that communicates an insight about the world (and can sometimes function as a guide to action). Eric McLuhan, interviewed in Signs of the Times: The History of Writing (Goëss Video, 1996), suggests that the future of the book is the aphoristic statement. Aphoristic knowledge has traditionally been transmitted through texts and through libraries, but this project brings into play various modes of recirculating aphoristic texts using contemporary distribution networks and digital media such as moving image, projection on to urban screens, artists’ books, archival digital photography and glazed ceramics. Texts ‘virally inhabit’ a number of sites and languages in a series of works situated in the interdisciplinary context of contemporary text art and artists’ books. The sayings rejoin the cultural river of ideas in local and international incarnations. Practice-based work (80%) and exegesis (20%)

Abstract:
This thesis began as an artistic investigation into the politics of identity and sex/sexuality. The main ideas that run throughout this exegesis position themselves within Nicolas Bourriaud’s ideas in the book Postproduction, and also around a parafeminist ideology. Within this I focus on popular music culture, the body, video and performance art, and visual representations of the body. I pay particular attention to the female body, and look into ideas of conventional social norms and how people challenge these. I look into the work of several female artists who deal with the visual representation, and also look at figures within popular music culture. Within band culture I look into how the band can be used as a vehicle to disseminate ideas wider audience. Art and music culture have fed off of each other for generations and can provide valuable strategies within each context for thinking beyond social norms. The remix can be used as a tactic to decode forms and narratives in popular culture. This can be used to investigate representations of identity within a space that is in a constant state of flux. This is particularly useful as a parafeminist strategy because it allows a context in which to question, rather than answer. As a result of this study I have found that there are no concrete answers when it comes to identity and sexuality, but can conclude that conventional gender representations and signifiers of identity can be remixed into different scenarios and narratives that can challenge social norms.

Folk art is the art of everyday life. Framing homes can be artistic when done with a degree of exemplary expertise. Jerry Saville is a master folk artist because of his special skills and techniques exhibited in his trade of carpentry. This research provides a glimpse into a carpenter’s life to discover what creates and sustains a master carpenter. Through desire, drive, dedication (time/practice), life experience/opportunity (apprenticeship), purpose, and a community of support, Jerry Saville became a master folk artist.

Abstract:
Art History
Ph.D.
In this study, I argue that the cult of the artist centered on memorial making. From the Quattrocento through the Seicento, the growth in the size and number of memorials for artists parallels the changes that took place regarding the social class, professional position, and economic privilege of practitioners of the three main visual arts, painting, sculpture, and architecture. Similar to portraits, self-portraits, personal emblems, and signatures, tomb effigies and epigraphs were a type of construction of identity that articulated similar notions, serving as a form of popular praise and as a way to preserve one's memory for posterity. Moreover, tombs for artists existed in the public sphere on a grand scale, reaching larger audiences and thus having a greater cultural impact. Additionally, in tandem with contemporary art theory, tomb making became a tangible outlet for the paragon of the arts and for comparison against each other. The funeral ceremony functioned not only as a communal display of local pride but it also served as a vehicle for constructing artist-patron relationships and a way to promote the profession. The faculty to fashion artistic ties through the public spectacle of the funeral and the permanent medium of the memorial proved to be particularly essential for the newly formed art academies in regard to group identity and professional bonding. Publicizing the unification of the three arts was a key concern for the academies, especially in regard to decorating communal burial sites and devising group insignia. The display of emblematic imagery in addition to the erection of inscriptions that link the artist to his master on the tomb memorial became a palpable way to formulate an artistic pedigree for that particular artist and for that associated community of artists. The early art companies in central Italy--I Virtuosi al Pantheon in the 1540s in Rome, the Accademia del Disegno in the 1560s in Florence, and the Accademia di San Luca in the 1590s in Rome--were founded with the intention to properly bury their members. Moreover, for members, establishing ties to Raphael and Michelangelo, who received unprecedented burials, were hailed as symbolic figureheads for the academies, and were venerated as "artistic saints," lies at the center of sixteenth-century memorial making for artists. For some in the profession, as was the case for the followers of Raphael, being buried near their capomaestro solidified real or desired connections. The display of what was believed to be Raphael's skull in the seventeenth-century Roman Academy exhibits the new regard for the artist. The physical being of the artist came to be an object charged with meaning, similar to a holy relic, bringing new meaning to the concept of the "divine artist." For others, viewing the miracle of the unmarred corpse of Michelangelo, their padre delle tre arti, upon the opening of his coffin after it arrived in Florence, left a lasting impression. By exploring the panegyric following of Raphael and Michelangelo with a focus on tomb memorials, this dissertation explores what is meant by the phrase the "cult of the artist," especially in relation to these two masters. In doing so, this study synthesizes and weaves together otherwise disparate sources in order to elucidate a better understanding of the idea of the artist during the Early Modern period in Italy. As it proves, honoring the artist through the creation of memorials was the principal way to publicly pay tribute to those in the trade and provided a new type of artistic camaraderie.

Higham, Hannah Ruth. "The Master of the Unruly Children and his artistic and creative identities." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7727/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines a group of terracotta sculptures attributed to an artist known as the Master of the Unruly Children. The name was coined by Wilhelm von Bode, on the occasion of his first grouping seven works in Berlin and London. Due to the distinctive characteristics of his work, this personality has become a mainstay of scholarship in Renaissance sculpture. Chapter One examines the historiography in connoisseurship from the late nineteenth century to the present and explores the idea of the scholarly “construction” of artistic identity. Repeated attempts to establish historical identities for our Master have resulted in the unique characteristics of our corpus remaining undefined, and the context in which the sculptures were produced inadequately established. Chapter Two surveys the Florentine tradition and highlights a practice of copying that is evident in the corpus and indicative of common workshop production. New classifications into which the corpus (Appendix I) is divided are proposed. Despite the singularity of subject matter associated with our Master an analysis of the iconography of the sculptures has never been carried out. Chapter three connects the works of our Master to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the humanist revival of antiquity, debates on the Church, notions of Charity, and the politics of Florence.

Laidler, Paul Anthony. "Collaborative digital and wide format printing : methods and considerations for the artist and master printer." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2011. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/16563/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the collaborative production of fine art digital prints for artists,a process which is used by many contemporary practitioners including Richard Hamilton and Damien Hirst. Digital print as a fine art process has emerged over the last twenty years, and as yet, there is no in depth evidence on the collaborative endeavour and production process which is central to the digital Master Printer’s role. The investigation first establishes the historical context and significance of the Master and Printer in traditional printmaking, and the more recent development of the digital print studio and the digital print pioneers of the 1990s. A series of seven artists’ case studies in the context of the collaborative digital print studio are then offered to demonstrate the working process. The analysis of these proposes a best practice model for Master Printers working with contemporary artists to produce high quality, fine art, wide format inkjet digital prints. The study also compares production methods at the cutting-edge digital facility of the Rijksakademie in The Netherlands, to assess the validity of the practices proposed through a facility closest to the study’s research base at the CFPR’s digital studio. The comparative study also explored the expanding digital production process and the role of the Master Printer. Evolving production processes are also considered in this study as a response to the advancement of digital print technology alongside a practical exploration of what actually constitutes a digital print in this rapidly expanding field of fine art printmaking. This study aims to reveal the inner workings of the digital collaborative process between the artist and Master Printer, and appraise the digital Master Printer’s role. It offers a set of best practice methods for the digital Master Printer developed from this research. The study also considers how the digital print, and the digital print studio may evolve in line with current and future developments in new technologies.

Abstract:
Vad betyder gruppen for individens prestation?

Full text
Abstract:
In what follows, I highlight negative environmental perspectives and actions based on traditional patterns of Western dualist thought with the ultimate aim of developing an alternative way of relating to the environment and the ‘other’, in general. In pursuit of such an alternative, I utilize embodied artistic practices in order to present the notion that one can engage more holistically with one’s environment, and the other. Through habitual, lifelong ‚Ways‛ cultivating specific practices generally necessary to creating and to viewing art, I argue, one can refine one’s ethical awareness and action. Following the aims of care ethics’ more context and experience-oriented approach to moral concern and to treatment of the other, as well as the philosophies of Japan, and feminist philosopher, Irigaray, I show how these artistic practices form a new awareness and stance that encompasses components of care. Finally, I briefly highlight how art has been used for positive activism.

The overall objective of this research is to understand the significance of the production of master clay artisans in the Alto do Moura community in Caruaru-PE. Specifically, this research aims to, i) identify the key purpose present in the production of figurative art by master-artisans from the Alto do Moura community; ii) describe the principal processes of training artisans through the generation of master-craftsmen, and iii) list the principal strategies which inbisibilize the clay figurative art production by women artisans and female artisan communities. In Alto do Moura, female artisans have sought visibility of their art, because there is a discrepancy between a greater recognition of the works of male artisans, and lesser recognition of the works of female artisans. At the same time they raise concerns about the formulation of an organization to empower women to be protagonists of their own knowledge and their own productions. In this sense, it has been a dialogue with the understandings of popular education, in the terms of Danilo Streck, Joao Francisco de Souza, Paulo Freire, Carlos Rodrigues Brandão and Marco RaúlMejía. In discussions related to feminism and its epistemologies in Latin America, we dialogued with Francesca Gargallo, Marcela Lagarde, Graciela Alonso, Raul Diaz and Maria Lugones. Aesthetics in the popular imagination was also another focal point of our study, and on account of this, we studied the ideas of Gilbert Durand, Michel Maffesoli and Danielle Perin Rocha Pitta. Finally, the theoretical framework of Boaventura de Sousa Santos' Sociology of Absences gave us the basis to discuss the invisibility of the formation of artisan women as master-teachers. These authors contributed to a better approach to the subject, and were able to reveal the various forms of exclusion of these artisans in a patriarchal and sexist system of domination. The study on women enabled a vision of building popular knowledge within a feminist production, and thus reaffirming the popular knowledge of the clay artisans in the Alto do Moura community.

Abstract:
Ngaromoana Raureti Tomoana is a painter from the East Coast of the North Island. In more than 30 years she has produced and shown a large body of work, like many other women artists concurrently juggling motherhood and artistic performance. Over approximately the last 10 years, she has formalized her education completing the Advanced Diploma for Maori Visual Arts at Toihoukura in Gisborne as well as a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Maori Visual Arts at Massey University. The artist, who identifies as an Indigenous Village Artist, is hardly known outside her local area of Northern Hawkes Bay, and, apart from a short feature in Mataora , a picture in Te Ata , and various catalogue entries, little has been written about her work. This thesis introduces Ngaromoana Raureti Tomoana and explores the notion of an indigenous village art. I incorporate feminist and postcolonial discourses into a political and critical engagement with her art, which addresses issues of village and land based cultural identity as well as race and gender. I argue that her work is politically motivated and important in the context of contemporary Maori art. Furthermore, based on a holistic world view, it simultaneously reaches out into the wider, global community. Intertwining local and personal history, her oeuvre is the manifestation of a female path and a female perspective, of identification with her village and beyond.

Abstract:
Drawing inspiration from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, this project seeks to incorporate the oxymetaphor, digital photography and photo manipulation into considerations of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. By considering the potential of an earthly site of transition (the cemetery) in relation to Dante's divine spaces, these images consider certain contradictions existing between the cemetery as a manifestation of waiting, permanence, and decay, and its associations with temporality and transition. The cemetery is therefore an oxymoron. It suggests both a beginning and an end; growth and decay; a place of closure and a pace of transition. Although Heaven, Hell and Purgatory have distinct characteristics in these images, there are commonalities between their layered treatments and iconography that unify them as a whole.

Scholars of Brazilian colonial history have long examined labor and workers as categories that were marked by degradation and social declassification. While this argument is not totally incorrect, such attitudes were not absolute and both categories need to be re-examined. That is the objective of this text. The basic idea here is that during the Modern Age life experiences acquired through honest and just labor could contribute positively to social classification. The town of Mariana (1709-1750) in Minas Gerais, Brazil, was chosen as the locus for analysis in attempting to understand different forms of labor* as readily available and valid sources of social classification. To do so it was necessary to: i) reconstitute a portion of the free labor market in a colonial slaveholding society; ii) understand access to and operational mechanisms specific to that labor market, as well as local credit networks; iii) narrate fragments of the trajectories, behavior, and strategies of local masters and journeymen. The results indicate the dimensions of free manual labor as a decisive part of economic and social dynamics in Mariana, especially because local production proved essential to regional economic survival. What emerged from the narratives were free workers who carried out their work in honorable fashion within the community. The trajectories of the master artisans Antônio Coelho da Fonseca, Pedro Rodrigues da Costa, and João Marques Pimenta, for instance, show that manual labor, whether learned or inherited, was a source of livelihood and was regarded as decent and honorable, giving workers the possibility of living like nobles. The experience in the world of labor may have been brief for some, but for many freeborn and freed workers and slaves it would never be forgotten. It was a page of the utmost importance in the moral narratives of many.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Post-war sculpture created by members of the Royal Academy of Arts was seemingly marginalised by Keynesian state patronage which privileged a new generation of avant-garde sculptors. This thesis considers whether selected Academicians (Siegfried Charoux, Frank Dobson, Maurice Lambert, Alfred Machin, John Skeaping and Charles Wheeler) variously engaged with pedagogy, community, exhibition practice and sculpture for the state, to access ascendant state patronage. Chapter One, The Post-war Expansion of State Patronage , investigates the existing and shifting parameters of patronage of the visual arts and specifically analyses how this was manifest through innovative temporary sculpture exhibitions. Chapter Two, The Royal Academy Sculpture School , examines the reasons why the Academicians maintained a conventional fine arts programme of study, in contrast to that of industrial design imposed by Government upon state art institutions for reasons of economic contribution. This chapter also analyses the role of the art-Master including the influence of émigré teachers, prospects for women sculpture students and the post-war scarcity of resources which inspired the use of new materials and techniques. Chapter Three, The Royal Academy as Community , traces the socialisation of London-based art societies whose memberships helped to identify sculptors for potential election to the Royal Academy; it then considers the gifting of elected Academicians Diploma Works. The empirical mapping of sponsorship for elected sculptors is investigated to determine how the organic profile of the Royal Academy s membership began to accommodate more modern sculptors and identifies a petition for change which may have influenced Munnings s speech (1949). Chapter Four, The Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions , explores the preparatory rituals of the Selection and Hanging Committees, processes for the selection of amateurs works, exhibit genres and critical reception. Moreover it contrasts the Summer Exhibitions with the Arts Council s Sculpture in the Home exhibition series to identify potential duplications. Chapter Five, Sculpture for the State , considers three diverse conduits facilitating the acquisition of sculpture for the state: The Chantrey Collection administered by the Royal Academy and exhibited at the Tate Gallery; the commissioning of Charles Wheeler s Earth and Water (1951 1953) for the new Ministry of Defence, London; and the selection of Siegfried Charoux s The Neighbours (1959) for London County Council s Patronage of the Arts Scheme . For these sculptures, complex expressions of Britishness are considered. In summary this thesis argues that unfettered by their allegiance to the Royal Academy of Arts its sculptors sought ways in which they might participate in the unprecedented opportunities that an expanded model of state patronage presented.

Abstract:

For the traditional painting works of Taiwan buildings, most of them existed were painted by several traditional families, including Kuo family, Chin-Shin Huang, Pi-Song Lu, King-long Hoi, and they played significant roles. The traditional planting had been developed to Taiwanese style. Besides building structure safety, it also owned some functions, such as seeking luck, avoiding calamity and educating. Of course, it recorded traditional value systems and human thoughts. With the time changed, the traditional painting works were exchanged to more diversity and elaboration. The study tried to recognize the classification and topic diversity of Jen-Her Lin by using in-depth interview, and it also collected his works by using field research for the research analysis. The main results for the study build the database of the traditional painting works, especially the works of Jen-Her Lin. The positive meanings were to record the traditional painting, to keep old techniques, and to analyze the works and their styles. For the traditional culture legacy, the modern teaching skills putted into the traditional techniques to educate more artisans for sustainable development. For the change of traditional painting and modern painting, the legacy system met several challenges with the new materials and skills. The study tried to discover the possibilities by using combining with traditional and local culture works from the master artisan, Jen-Her Lin. BYLSMA, MEGAN. ""Betting on Saskatchewan" : Nationalism, Cultural Imperialism and the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/6916.

Full text
Abstract:
The Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops from the 1950s to the 1970s were a series of professional workshops held in northern Saskatchewan, under the auspices of the University of Saskatchewan and Regina College, for the creation and advancement of a dynamic arts culture in the province and as a way for the individual artists there to overcome feelings of isolation from the Canadian cultural hubs. Throughout the course of the Workshops provincial and federal attitudes, and cultural policies and perspectives on cultural nation building exerted an overarching influence in the shaping of the Workshops. The Workshops drew the attention and support of many established celebrity U.S. artists and it is due to their presence and influence at the Workshops that it is possible to examine the provincial and national response to perceived U.S. cultural imperialism. The founding and maturity of the Workshops is a case study of the ways in which the politics of Canadian nationalism and the effects of U.S. cultural imperialism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries interacted to impact the growth and development of art communities across Canada. The Workshops serve as an example of the effects, on a regional art movement, of Canada’s relationship with the United States, and Canadian response to the perceived threat of cultural imperialism from the U.S. Because the Workshops were a microcosm of cultural production, involving artists who, aside from their participation at Emma Lake, were often fairly isolated from the ebb and flow of art currents inherent to larger cultural centers, the Workshops are also an important case study of the effects of national and provincial policy on the regional arts. The Workshops’ history reveals that ideas of nationalism, regionalism and continentalism can come together to have a profound and unique effect on the development of an art community.

Chinese culture has been passed down for more than 5,000 years, and Chinese artistic development has been significantly affected by the Prajñā (wisdom) thinking of “emptiness” and “existence” of Buddhist Ch′an. In particular, the subsequent literati paintings excel in improving the artistic conception and aesthetics of emptiness. Master Hiu-wan was the founder of Huafan University, as well as a Prajñā (wisdom) practitioner combining literature with education, art, philosophical thinking, and religion. She devoted herself to promoting the “education of perception” of the Buddha, and realized the sophisticated meanings of “combining art with Buddhism” and “Buddhism can be practiced through art” with her own profound Ch′an studies and art of painting. She practiced Ch′an using her paintings to elaborate the profound meanings of “perception” and “Ch′an mind” of Ch′an, as well as to ultimately benefit and rescue general public. Firstly, this study probed into the rise of Buddhist art in India and development of Chinese Buddhist art. Secondly, this study interpreted the 3 characteristics of artistic conception and aesthetics in the south school landscape paintings from the artistic aesthetics theories in Artistic Conception Aesthetics and Hermeneutics “vivid charm,”“sophisticated void-solid phenomenon,” and “learning of the nature.” Besides, this study also attempted to understand the 3 links of Ch′an’s artistic conception aesthetics: the artistic experiencing of “embodiment of self-essence” of “realization” of Ch′an, the artistic image of “sophisticated phenomenon of avoid-solid coexistence” of “absent without leave” of Ch′an, and the artistic truth of “realization of local scenery” of “the present” of Ch′an. Afterwards, this study investigated the learning concept and process of Master Hiu-wan's Ch′an paintings and her discourses about the essences and perception of artistic conception aesthetics of Ch′an paintings, such as: Ch′an paintings, and sutra painting. Hopefully, this study can associate the artistic conception and aesthetic ideas of artistic works of Master Hiu-wan's “Buddhism can be practiced through art and combining art with Buddhism” with Confucius’ Confucian idea “Let the will be set on the path of duty. Let every attainment in what is good be firmly grasped. Let perfect virtue be accorded with. Let relaxation and enjoyment be found in the polite arts” to perform theoretical research, analysis, summary, comparison, and objective analysis and investigation, and arrange context and directions for interpretation.

Abstract:
Photographic technology is increasingly respondent to a desire for the production and consumption of information. The current age of photography not only possesses the ability to capture the image, but also to capture photographic metadata as supplemental information. Engaging in the premise that the photographic image exists as an incomplete medium to the transfer of information, this research identifies the acquisition of data as a means to resolve interpretation and quantify the photographic image. Inhabiting a complex territory within this structure, the photographic image manifests multiplicity and operates as source, production, and capture of information. This work challenges the perceptions of how to engage with the dialogues created between the photographic image, and the externally appended metadata.

Abstract:
«Poetic portrait in Zabolotsky’s poetry» master’s paper is an attempt at a systemic analysis of Zabolotsky’s poetry focused on category of poetic portrait. Author of this paper tries to reconstruct Zabolotsky’s own artistic worldview by reviewing poetic portraits, as well as common principles and means that create them. Poet’s attitude towards his lyric subjects is dynamic and changes over time, so the author of this paper searches for the examples of this process among the portraits. The paper consists of three parts each representing one period of poet’s work: portraits of the «Columns»; long and short poems of 1930s; ethical and philosophic direction in later poetry of 1940-50s. The author offers original classification of poetic portraits in Zabolotsky’s works.

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with the reception of Dutch realism in the late Gothic panel painting in Bohemia. Its aim is to examine the principles of reception of new artistic forms and ideas that originated in the Dutch art centers in the 15th century. The Czech painting of the 15th century was adopting these innovative trends exclusively from the neighbouring countries. Therefore, the work addresses mainly issues related to artistic exchanges between Bohemia and the surrounding - mostly German-speaking - regions. It looks into the specific ways in which artistic exchange took place - the mobility of artists, art imports, the importance of graphic and other models.
