Abstract:
The main eutrophication-related phenomena in the Adriatic Sea such as phytoplankton blooms, anoxia, macroalgae proliferation, gel production and toxic algae are briefly presented. A cost-benefit evaluation of different phosphorus control strategies for the recovery of the northern Adriatic coastal waters is summarized. The ongoing and planned activities considered by the Italian Authorities are illustrated. They include the definition of a research programme and an operative research project (responsibility of the Ministry for the Scientific Research and University) and the development of the Master Plan (responsibility of the Ministry of the Environment) to provide decision makers with a sound information to implement policies for the restoration of the marine ecosystem. The general objectives of the research programme are: a) to maximize effectiveness of the research efforts aiming to be consistent with real needs, b) to eliminate unnecessary programmes; c) to ensure optimal use of existing infrastructures, d) to allow the development of a sound Master Plan and e) to promote cooperation with national and international programmes. The research programme recognizes seven topics, i.e. physical oceanography and dynamic characters, nutrients, toxic substances, biological agents, modification of marine habitats, present status of the Adriatic ecosystem and human health. For each item priorities for action are indicated. Finally, the goals of the Master Plan (responsibility of the Ministry for the Environment) are listed. They include the definition of a feasible project for the restoration of the basin using alternative methods of intervention, taking into consideration the compatibility between the predicted uses of the waterbody, the assessment of the efficiency of the predicted measures in relation to the use of the resources on one hand, and the priorities for the same measures on the other.

Abstract:
Dick Laws was the leading marine mammalogist of his generation, developing in the Antarctic new techniques and approaches to population studies, notably with elephant seals and great whales. He later pioneered similar approaches with large mammals, especially elephants, in Africa before returning to the UK as Head of Life Sciences, then Director, of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). His inspirational and unequivocal leadership saw BAS and its science develop and flourish, both in difficult times and through the major reorganization and expansion to fulfil its enhanced role and responsibilities after the Falklands conflict. He was a staunch supporter and leading advocate of the Antarctic Treaty System and was hugely instrumental in the development of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals and of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. He led the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (eventually as its president) into ground-breaking collaborative programmes of research into the biological oceanography of the Southern Ocean in support of the sustainable management of its living resources. On retirement from BAS he became Master of St Edmund's College, Cambridge, presiding over its transition to an institution fully integrated into the collegiate system of the university. He also served with distinction in Cambridge University affairs generally. An imposing and charismatic individual of total probity and conviction, loyalty and dedication, greatly admired by friends and colleagues, respected by opponents, he leaves an unrivalled legacy to the population ecology and management of large mammals and to the science, conservation and management of the Antarctic.

Abstract:
Research and development (R&D) is a strategic issue for the European maritime industries, which at the brink of a new millennium are facing various challenges such as maintaining a competitive edge against worldwide competition, responsible exploitation and management of marine resources and combining competitiveness and profitability with care for safety and environment. Recognizing the benefits resulting from coordination of R&D efforts for both industry and European Union, the Maritime Industries Forum (MIF) established in December 1994 a R&D Co-ordination Group, which took upon itself to develop a R&D Master Plan setting thereby a reference for maritime research in the years to come. The paper addresses the various aspects of the European Maritime Research with respect to objectives, organization and content, highlighting the initiatives undertaken by the maritime industries in setting R&D objectives and programs, in particular the work of COREDES, the R&D Committee of CESA (Committee of European Shipbuilders Associations). The paper further addresses the EU Fifth Frame Programme and its references regarding Maritime R&D, in particular Key Action 3 (Land Transport and Maritime Technologies) and some of the instruments for facilitating R&D activities, and gives the main lines of R&D areas and issues. Parallels between European maritime research and the U.S. NSRP programs based on available information are drawn showing the differences and commonalities between the two programs. Finally, the paper highlights the emerging contours of the EU Sixth Frame Program and suggests possible areas for future cooperation in maritime research between U.S. and Europe.

Abstract:
<strong><em>Naval base as one of the integral components of the SSAT is the spearhead of power in carrying out support for the tasks of the operating units both in peacetime and during war. In carrying out its duties the Navy has an Integrated Fleet Weapon System (SSAT) which is the integration of strength of the capabilities of the KRI, Aircraft, Marines and Naval base components. To find out the professional level of the soldier, it is necessary to hold a Test of Combat Naval Base Task Force in order to realize, maintain and improve the skills of both individuals and groups, which in turn will increase the establishment of Operational Command and Control, Operational Procedures and the establishment of mastery of appropriate techniques and tactics. With the implementation of the test, it is expected to know about Naval Base Combat Readiness, a condition where the base can carry out its main tasks. Combat Duty Rehearsal is an exercise carried out by KRI or base to maintain the ability and professionalism of soldiers both programmed and programmed. This study aims to determine whether the relationship of human resource readiness influences the professional abilities of the Naval Base on west coast.</em></strong>

Abstract:
Abstract Within the Swedish Master Mariner programme 360 days of onboard training are included. A supervisor is designated on board during the internship, with the task of helping to develop and support the student. The aim of this study is to illuminate: the supervisor’s experiences of the student’s ability to handle their time on board, their thoughts about their own role, and the arrangement of the onboard training. This is a qualitative study in which seven supervisors, active in four different shipping companies were interviewed. The selection of this type of study was based on the fact that interviews would capture the respondents’ perceptions and experiences, and at the same time allow for them to develop their reasoning. The selection of respondents in this study was limited to Swedish supervisors for Master Mariner students employed in Swedish-owned product tankers. The study reveals that the supervisors are positive about their role and the opportunities that the training generates for the students, and also about their own influence on their future colleagues. The study also reveals that students may gain more from the internship by utilising their rest days. Each student has a total of 52 rest days during the internship.

Abstract:
Kalmar Maritime Academy have experienced a trend of falling number of applications to their Officer programmes during the last years. This fact have made the Academy unable to fill all seats with enrolled students. The purpose of the thesis was to get an understanding of how well the High School students in Kalmar knew the Maritime Academy and its Officer Programmes. This was made by a questionnaire and the answering classes were limited to those in their graduating year in one of the six university preparatory progammes and attending a High School in the City of Kalmar. The results showed that knowledge about the Academy’s programmes is low. The students have, in many cases, not seen the Academy in relation to their University choices and they also do not know what programmes and courses the Maritime Academy has to offer. The conclusion is it could be marketing that is failing and needs to be changed if the trend is to be turned around.

Abstract:
The broad interdisciplinarity of my science and my worldview are direct products of my career spent in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program. I attribute the holistic systems approaches that I use in my teaching and mentoring to my career spent in the LTER program. I am able to converse with a broad array of collaborators and practitioners because of my career spent in the LTER program. My career is rich with interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships thanks to the LTER program. My life is rich with friends that I have met throughout my career spent in the LTER program. There are probably few mid-career scientists who have spent virtually all of their careers associated with the LTER network. As one of these few, I view this as a tremendous asset. My experiences in the LTER program began in 1983 with the North Inlet Program (NIN), where my master’s research, advised by the late Hank McKellar, involved modeling salt marsh ecosystem dynamics. After completing my PhD at Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1989, I returned to the NIN for a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship with Fred Sklar at the Baruch Marine Laboratory. I worked with Fred on another of his National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, but there was considerable overlap between that research and the work being done at NIN. When the NSF released a solicitation for new coastal LTER sites in 1998, I was an assistant professor at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. We gathered a core group of Everglades colleagues and answered this solicitation with a proposal to study coastal ecosystem dynamics in the Florida Everglades. Our proposal was successful, and by early 2000 the new Florida Coastal Everglades LTER program (FCE) was off and running. I directed FCE from its inception until I left FIU in 2008 for Arizona State University (ASU). On arriving at ASU in 2008, I immediately became involved with the Central Arizona–Phoenix (CAP) LTER program. I was excited about my move to ASU and the new School of Sustainability because I felt as if it were a rare mid-career opportunity to change the trajectory of, and perhaps even the impact of, my career.
