Abstract:
This master thesis is a part of the ongoing research on EAT development project. Its main goal is to research whether Eclipse Modeling Project can be used as an alternative platform to using NetBeans in implementing EAT tool. In order to fulfill this goal, it contains analysis of the current EAT tool version and design research of a new version using EMP. The design addresses most of the issues related to building a new version and eventually recommends porting EAT to EMP.

Abstract:
Exploring spatio-temporal flux within architecture, this thesis presents design-based research on the temporal environments of Oceania and Western evental theory. Oceanic thought and Western theories of the event share commonalities, both holding that space and time are inseparable dimensions. This spatio-temporal concept challenges Western philosophical and architectural doxa that privilege stasis over temporal flux, and offers a mode by which to introduce alterity into architectural discourse. I move over these cultural and philosophical grounds in order to explicate and further develop a personal design practice that is of this place and time for, while there is a body of writing that documents Oceanic built environments, there is less research that considers how these may be constituted and communicated through contemporary architectural design. The thesis posits two temporalised environments apparent within Oceanic spatial thought and practice – the shifting and extensive oceanscape, and the telluric groundscape that makes space; and describes two resultant spatial typologies – an oceanspace which is characterised by openness and mobility, and a groundspace which is both surface and space. These contentions are tested and theorised through three architectural experiments developed between 1999 and 2005: the Sounds House, which operates as an open and mutable spatial field; the Ground House, which forms monumental “interiors” that emerge from and relate to the earth; and Tokatea, which blends these two spatialities, fabricating a temporalised environment in between the momentary and the monumental, between interior and exterior. In presenting and discussing these speculative spaces, this thesis moves between architecture and academia, Oceania and the West, the ephemeral and the enduring, and the inside and the outside, with the aim of destabilising architecture’s discursive ground, causing its hermetic boundaries to become temporalised and fluid.

Wheeler, Nathan. "On the Effectiveness of an IOT - FOG - CLOUD Architecture for a real-world application." UNF Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/855.

Full text
Abstract:
Fog Computing is an emerging computing paradigm that shifts certain processing closer to the Edge of a network, generally within one network hop, where latency is minimized, and results can be obtained the quickest. However, not a lot of research has been done on the effectiveness of Fog in real-world applications. The aim of this research is to show the effectiveness of the Fog Computing paradigm as the middle layer in a 3-tier architecture between the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Cloud. Two applications were developed: one utilizing Fog in a 3-tier architecture and another application using IoT and Cloud with no Fog. A quantitative and qualitative analysis followed the application development, with studies focused on application response time and walkthroughs for AWS Greengrass and Amazon Machine Learning. Furthermore, the application itself demonstrates an architecture which is of both business and research value, providing a real-life coffee shop use-case and utilizing a newly available Fog offering from Amazon known as Greengrass. At the Cloud level, the newly available Amazon Machine Learning API was used to perform predictive analytics on the data provided by the IoT devices. Results suggest that Fog-enabled applications have a much lower range of response times as well as lower response times overall. These results suggest Fog-enabled solutions are suitable for applications which require network stability and reliably lower latency.

Massey University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/923.

Full text
Abstract:
Cities are not merely inanimate objects. They are complex living environments, built over time by cultures and civilisations. This thesis argues that cities have a central place in human history and civilisation because they are imbued with meaning and meaningful activity. Thus, cities are inherently political spaces, and it may be reasonably expected that they will be important sites of social transformation in the postmodern era. In order to understand the relationship between urban space and political consciousness, this thesis traces several different interpretive paths within the marxist tradition. First, we examine the work of Henri Lefebvre, who argues for an understanding of urban space as socially produced. Next, the thesis looks at the contributions of Guy Debord, particularly at his understanding of the relation between time and the city. Both writers struggle to understand the urban in the context of the shift to what we now call postmodernity. Despite their many strengths, Debord and Lefebvre ultimately fail to theorise a social subject capable of resisting capitalist domination of the city. As a result, the thesis turns to a consideration of the work of Antonio Negri. Negri’s analysis of the fate of contemporary subjectivity has reinvigorated marxist critique with a return to the question of political change. His figure of the multitude takes leave of traditional marxism in challenging and productive ways, and helps us better understand the nature of subjectivity and resistance in a world of immaterial labour and virtuality. Nevertheless, this thesis argues that there is still work to be done before Negri’s work can be mapped out onto the contemporary metropolis.

Abstract:
Web page loading time is one of the critical challenges on the Internet. Thistopic attracts more researchers as it largely reflects the user satisfaction.A web page resources typically consists of Hyper Text Markup Language(HTML), Cascading Style-Sheet (CSS), JavaScript (JS), media files, etc.As the complexity of the web page increases, the size of files fetched fromserver also increases which causes delay in transmitting, loading, parsing andrendering the web page. The web page is not rendered until HTML, CSS and JS files are loadedand parsed. Not all such files are needed to be rendered for the first page.Optimizing and loading only critical les required for the first page, can considerablyreduce time taken to load the web page. After the first page isrendered, the rest of the files can be loaded and executed. In this thesis,we focus on improving the time taken for First Meaningful Paint(FMP) ofwebsite by loading the critical files initially. We used Design Science Research(DSR) methodology and created a PhantomJS application, to identifyand segregate used and unused CSS for the first meaningful paint of the webpage. We also analyzed script files to load only critical files required forFMP and the rest later. We evaluated our experiment by studying a case onAxis Communications AB and measured its website's performance to find ifour experiment reduced FMP time. It showed improvement in time takenfor FMP from 1284ms to 372.6ms. Based on the results, we suggest to webdevelopers to separate and load the files required for FMP and load the restof the files needed for the website later, so that the first page is renderedquickly.

Blair, James M. "Architectures for Real-Time Automatic Sign Language Recognition on Resource-Constrained Device." UNF Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/851.

Full text
Abstract:
Powerful, handheld computing devices have proliferated among consumers in recent years. Combined with new cameras and sensors capable of detecting objects in three-dimensional space, new gesture-based paradigms of human computer interaction are becoming available. One possible application of these developments is an automated sign language recognition system. This thesis reviews the existing body of work regarding computer recognition of sign language gestures as well as the design of systems for speech recognition, a similar problem. Little work has been done to apply the well-known architectural patterns of speech recognition systems to the domain of sign language recognition. This work creates a functional prototype of such a system, applying three architectures seen in speech recognition systems, using a Hidden Markov classifier with 75-90% accuracy. A thorough search of the literature indicates that no cloud-based system has yet been created for sign language recognition and this is the first implementation of its kind. Accordingly, there have been no empirical performance analyses regarding a cloud-based Automatic Sign Language Recognition (ASLR) system, which this research provides. The performance impact of each architecture, as well as the data interchange format, is then measured based on response time, CPU, memory, and network usage across an increasing vocabulary of sign language gestures. The results discussed herein suggest that a partially-offloaded client-server architecture, where feature extraction occurs on the client device and classification occurs in the cloud, is the ideal selection for all but the smallest vocabularies. Additionally, the results indicate that for the potentially large data sets transmitted for 3D gesture classification, a fast binary interchange protocol such as Protobuf has vastly superior performance to a text-based protocol such as JSON.

Abstract:
The building which manifests itself is a direct reaction to the desires of the site and more importantly to the functions it houses. The purpose of this thesis though is to make an addition to the desires and to solve a desire which is not so evident to the naked eye. This desire is to eliminate the product which will manifest itself in the near future if nothing is done to change its clear and certain direction. The product I speak of is decentralized society where human interaction is almost elimininated. The thesis manifests a new building type one which is labeled "a complex for computer technologies" this complex looks at the relationship between architecture and the computer image in three different levels but always promoting human interaction.

Abstract:
In the course of studying painting for the past three years at the University of Iowa, I have found collaborating with other artists to be a great way for me to try on different hats. Two of these collaborations in particular, The Old Man Study Group with Hamlett Dobbins (Memphis, TN) and The Coracle Drawing Club with David Dunlap (Iowa City, IA), have given me the license and opportunity to pretend to be someone else. These collaborative projects have asked me to consider, and at times adopt, even if only for a moment, the interests and concerns of another maker. A few months into these two projects, I noticed that the work I was making on my own, in the isolation of my own studio, was suddenly open to the world's innovations, and not just my own.

Komathukattil, Deepa V. "Evaluating Speedup in Parallel Compilers." UNF Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/417.

Full text
Abstract:
Parallel programming is prevalent in every field mainly to speed up computation. Advancements in multiprocessor technology fuel this trend toward parallel programming. However, modern compilers are still largely single threaded and do not take advantage of the machine resources available to them. There has been a lot of work done on compilers that add parallel constructs to the programs they are compiling, enabling programs to exploit parallelism at run time. Auto parallelization of loops by a compiler is one such example. Researchers have done very little work towards parallelizing the compilation process itself. The research done here focuses on parallel compilers that target computation speedup by parallelizing the process of program compilation during the lexical analysis and semantic analysis phase. Parallelization brings along with it issues like synchronization, concurrency and communication overhead. In the semantic analysis phase, these issues are of particular relevance during the construction of the symbol table. Research done on a concurrent compiler developed at the University of Toronto in 1991 proposed three techniques to address the generation of the symbol table [Seshadri91]. The goal here is to implement a parallel compiler using concepts from those techniques as references. The research done here will augment the work done formerly and measure the performance speedup obtained.

Full text
Abstract:
Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) is extensively used in various multifactor authentication protocols. In this work, various recent ECC based authentication and key exchange protocols are subjected to threat modeling and static analysis to detect vulnerabilities, and to enhance them to be more secure against threats. This work demonstrates how currently used ECC based protocols are vulnerable to attacks. If protocols are vulnerable, damages could include critical data loss and elevated privacy concerns. The protocols considered in thiswork differ in their usage of security factors (e.g. passwords, pins, and biometrics), encryption and timestamps. The threatmodel considers various kinds of attacks including denial of service, man in the middle, weak authentication and SQL injection. Countermeasures to reduce or prevent such attacks are suggested. Beyond cryptanalysis of current schemes and proposal of new schemes, the proposed adversary model and criteria set forth provide a benchmark for the systematic evaluation of future two-factor authentication proposals.

Abstract:
Cloud computing is a relatively new form of computing which uses virtualized resources. It is dynamically scalable and is often provided as pay for use service over the Internet or Intranet or both. With increasing demand for data storage in the cloud, the study of data-intensive applications is becoming a primary focus. Data intensive applications are those which involve high CPU usage, processing large volumes of data typically in size of hundreds of gigabytes, terabytes or petabytes. The research in this thesis is focused on the Amazon’s Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) and Amazon Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) using HiBench Hadoop Benchmark suite. HiBench is a Hadoop benchmark suite and is used for performing and evaluating Hadoop based data intensive computation on both these cloud platforms. Both quantitative and qualitative comparisons of Amazon EC2 and Amazon EMR are presented. Also presented are their pricing models and suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
In computer security, cryptographic algorithms and protocols are required to ensure security of data and applications. This research investigates techniques to reduce the energy consumed by cryptographic hash functions. The specific hash functions considered are Message Digest-2 (MD2), Message Digest-5 (MD5), Secure Hash Algorithm-1 (SHA-1) and Secure Hash Algorithm-2 (SHA-2). The discussion around energy conservation in handheld devices like laptops and mobile devices is gaining momentum. Research has been done at the hardware and operating system levels to reduce the energy consumed by these devices. However, research on conserving energy at the application level is a new approach. This research is motivated by the energy consumed by anti-virus applications which use computationally intensive hash functions to ensure security. To reduce energy consumption by existing hash algorithms, the generic energy complexity model, designed by Roy et al. [Roy13], has been applied and tested. This model works by logically mapping the input across the eight available memory banks in the DDR3 architecture and accessing the data in parallel. In order to reduce the energy consumed, the data access pattern of the hash functions has been studied and the energy complexity model has been applied to hash functions to redesign the existing algorithms. These experiments have shown a reduction in the total energy consumed by hash functions with different degrees of parallelism of the input message, as the energy model predicted, thereby supporting the applicability of the energy model on the different hash functions chosen for the study. The study also compared the energy consumption by the hash functions to identify the hash function suitable for use based on required security level. Finally, statistical analysis was performed to verify the difference in energy consumption between MD5 and SHA2.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this master thesis was to develop a method for real-time classification of market trading data at the Foreign Exchange (FX) department at the Skandinaviska Enskilda Bank (SEB). The characteristics in the market data sets were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The analysis showed that the principal component subspaces for two different types of market data, normal and abnormal, for the EUR/USD instrument where significantly different. The result from the PCA naturally led into the construction of a Single-class detector, for detecting if quote updates were normal or abnormal based on training data. The market data sets were shown to possess multicollinear characteristics, resulting in low-rank properties of the covariance matrices. To overcome this problem the solution was to transform the data using PCA, resulting in full-rank properties of the covariance matrices of the transformed data. This vital step made it possible to classify quote updates for the EUR/USD instrument. The project resulted in a classification algorithm which is able to successfully classify if a quote update is normal or abnormal with respect to training data in real-time. The algorithm is versatile in the sense that it can be implemented on any market for any currency pair, and can easily be extended to classify the relative behaviour between several currency pairs in real-time.

Abstract:
Network security is an ongoing major problem in today’s Internet world. Even though there have been simulation studies related to denial of service and cache attacks, studies of attacks on real networks are still lacking in the research. In this thesis, the effects of cache attacks in real information-centric networking systems were investigated. Cache attacks were implemented in real networks with different cache sizes and with Least Recently Used, Random and First In First Out algorithms to fill the caches in each node. The attacker hits the cache with unpopular content, making the user request that the results be fetched from web servers. The cache hit, time taken to get the result, and number of hops to serve the request were calculated with real network traffic. The results of the implementation are provided for different topologies and are compared with the simulation results.

Futral, Jeremy Stephen. "A method of evaluation of high-performance computing batch schedulers." UNF Digital Commons, 2019. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/869.

Full text
Abstract:
According to Sterling et al., a batch scheduler, also called workload management, is an application or set of services that provide a method to monitor and manage the flow of work through the system [Sterling01]. The purpose of this research was to develop a method to assess the execution speed of workloads that are submitted to a batch scheduler. While previous research exists, this research is different in that more complex jobs were devised that fully exercised the scheduler with established benchmarks. This research is important because the reduction of latency even if it is miniscule can lead to massive savings of electricity, time, and money over the long term. This is especially important in the era of green computing [Reuther18]. The methodology used to assess these schedulers involved the execution of custom automation scripts. These custom scripts were developed as part of this research to automatically submit custom jobs to the schedulers, take measurements, and record the results. There were multiple experiments conducted throughout the course of the research. These experiments were designed to apply the methodology and assess the execution speed of a small selection of batch schedulers. Due to time constraints, the research was limited to four schedulers. x The measurements that were taken during the experiments were wall time, RAM usage, and CPU usage. These measurements captured the utilization of system resources of each of the schedulers. The custom scripts were executed using, 1, 2, and 4 servers to determine how well a scheduler scales with network growth. The experiments were conducted on local school resources. All hardware was similar and was co-located within the same data-center. While the schedulers that were investigated as part of the experiments are agnostic to whether the system is grid, cluster, or super-computer; the investigation was limited to a cluster architecture.

Abstract:
There is currently considerable enthusiasm around the MapReduce paradigm, and the distributed computing paradigm for analysis of large volumes of data. The Apache Hadoop is the most popular open source implementation of MapReduce model and LINQ to HPC is Microsoft's alternative to open source Hadoop. In this thesis, the performance of LINQ to HPC and Hadoop are compared using different benchmarks. To this end, we identified four benchmarks (Grep, Word Count, Read and Write) that we have run on LINQ to HPC as well as on Hadoop. For each benchmark, we measured each system’s performance metrics (Execution Time, Average CPU utilization and Average Memory utilization) for various degrees of parallelism on clusters of different sizes. Results revealed some interesting trade-offs. For example, LINQ to HPC performed better on three out of the four benchmarks (Grep, Read and Write), whereas Hadoop performed better on the Word Count benchmark. While more research that is extensive has focused on Hadoop, there are not many references to similar research on the LINQ to HPC platform, which is slowly evolving during the writing of this thesis.

Abstract:
Currently, smart mobile devices are used for more than just calling and texting. They can run complex applications such as GPS, antivirus, and photo editor applications. Smart devices today offer mobility, flexibility, and portability, but they have limited resources and a relatively weak battery. As companies began creating mobile resource intensive and power intensive applications, they have realized that cloud computing was one of the solutions that they could utilize to overcome smart device constraints. Cloud computing helps decrease memory usage and improve battery life. Mobile cloud computing is a current and expanding research area focusing on methods that allow smart mobile devices to take full advantage of cloud computing. Code offloading is one of the techniques employed in cloud computing with mobile devices. This research compares two dynamic offloading frameworks to determine which one is better in terms of execution time and battery life improvement.

Abstract:
There is an element of play within all of us. It is imagination and interaction that makes us human. In this digital age, it is evident that we are losing touch with our own ability to remain imaginative and explore new and different ways to physically interact with our environment. In this thesis, it is my goal is to design in a way that does not limit human abilities, but instead promotes the idea of play between our wants and needs as well as re-sparking our imagination. In this thesis exploration, I experimented with multiple scales of playful design. I will show you how I implemented the idea of play for the design of a kite, a toy, a furniture piece, and a building. All of these projects are examples of designs that could have been static elements, but instead were designed to be dynamic to complement our everyday dynamic lives. Enjoy!

Carle, William R. II. "Active Analytics: Adapting Web Pages Automatically Based on Analytics Data." UNF Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/629.

Full text
Abstract:
Web designers are expected to perform the difficult task of adapting a site’s design to fit changing usage trends. Web analytics tools give designers a window into website usage patterns, but they must be analyzed and applied to a website's user interface design manually. A framework for marrying live analytics data with user interface design could allow for interfaces that adapt dynamically to usage patterns, with little or no action from the designers. The goal of this research is to create a framework that utilizes web analytics data to automatically update and enhance web user interfaces. In this research, we present a solution for extracting analytics data via web services from Google Analytics and transforming them into reporting data that will inform user interface improvements. Once data are extracted and summarized, we expose the summarized reports via our own web services in a form that can be used by our client side User Interface (UI) framework. This client side framework will dynamically update the content and navigation on the page to reflect the data mined from the web usage reports. The resulting system will react to changing usage patterns of a website and update the user interface accordingly. We evaluated our framework by assigning navigation tasks to users on the UNF website and measuring the time it took them to complete those tasks, one group with our framework enabled, and one group using the original website. We found that the group that used the modified version of the site with our framework enabled was able to navigate the site more quickly and effectively.

Soni, Neha. "An Empirical Performance Analysis Of IaaS Clouds With CloudStone Web 2.0 Benchmarking Tool." UNF Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/583.

Full text
Abstract:
Web 2.0 applications have become ubiquitous over the past few years because they provide useful features such as a rich, responsive graphical user interface that supports interactive and dynamic content. Social networking websites, blogs, auctions, online banking, online shopping and video sharing websites are noteworthy examples of Web 2.0 applications. The market for public cloud service providers is growing rapidly, and cloud providers offer an ever-growing list of services. As a result, developers and researchers find it challenging when deciding which public cloud service to use for deploying, experimenting or testing Web 2.0 applications. This study compares the scalability and performance of a social-events calendar application on two Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud services – Amazon EC2 and HP Cloud. This study captures and compares metrics on three different instance configurations for each cloud service such as the number of concurrent users (load), as well as response time and throughput (performance). Additionally, the total price of the three different instance configurations for each cloud service is calculated and compared. This comparison of the scalability, performance and price metrics provides developers and researchers with an insight into the scalability and performance characteristics of the three instance configurations for each cloud service, which simplifies the process of determining which cloud service and instance configuration to use for deploying their Web 2.0 applications. This study uses CloudStone – an open-source, three-tier web application benchmarking tool that simulates Web 2.0 application activities – as a realistic workload generator and to capture the intended metrics. The comparison of the collected metrics indicate that all of the tested Amazon EC2 instance configurations provide better scalability and lower latency at a lower cost than the respective HP Cloud instance configurations; however, the tested HP Cloud instance configurations provide a greater storage capacity than the Amazon EC2 instance configurations, which is an important consideration for data-intensive Web 2.0 applications.

Hjärtén, Martin. "Master thesis in interpretation of controlled-source radiomagnetotelluric data from Hallandsåsen." Thesis, Uppsala University, Geophysics, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-8015.

Full text
Abstract:

Controlled Source Tensor Magnetotelluric (CSTMT) ground measurements were executed on the Hallandsåsen horst where a major tunnel is under construction. The instrument system EnviroMT are used for this purpose. The major research aspect of this thesis has been to form an opinion of the effectiveness of the method by comparing the results from the CSTMT survey with a prior investigation performed with the DC resistivity method. Another important part of this thesis has been to compile the basic and fundamental CSTMT and RMT theory, in a way that people outside the EM community easily can be introduced to the subject.

When comparing the different inversion models from the CSTMT and DC resistivity surveys one can see differences in the depth at which the conductors are resolved. In the CSTMT inversion models (TE+TM) there are two conductors that possibly can reach the depth of the tunnel in construction. These conductors are not resolved at the deeper structures in the DC resistivity models. Whether the conductors in the CSTMT inversions (TE+TM) truly extend to the depth at which they are modeled, or if they in deeper parts are artificial effects of regularisation in the inversion cannot be said for sure. Accounting for the low frequencies utilised in the TE mode, one has very strong arguments that the deep conductors seen in the CSTMT model are true.

The TE-mode models have shown to be much less affected by the complex problems of near field effects in comparison with the TM-mode models. The evidence of the near field effects is very prominent in the TM-mode phase, but in the phase of the TE-mode one can not see any such tendencies. However, one can see a discontinuity in the same part of three profile lines which shows that the data is disturbed but not nearly as much as in the TM-mode. The apparent resistivity seems to be over all less affected by the near field effects. In the apparent resistivity of the TE-mode, one can not discern any near field effects at all.

In the TM-mode, the apparent resistivity shows higher apparent resistivity than the real apparent resistivity in the near field. To receive more information about the deeper structures, lower controlled source frequencies were allowed in the TE-mode than in the TM-mode inversion models. The RMS in the TE-mode inversions has not been deteriorated, which is an another indication that the TE mode is not very disturbed by the near field effects.

The RMT inversion models are shown to be heavily biased in the deeper parts to which the RMT data are insensitive and regularization determining the outcome of the inversion. One can also see that regularisation is influencing the whole inversion model. In the shallow subsurface the inversion models should be same for CSTMT and RMT, but one can see differences in resistivity between the models.

The real induction arrows show features that are not as clearly displayed in either the phase or apparent resistivity. It seems that the real induction arrows are better at detecting lateral differences in conductivity in a more resistive media, than the phase and apparent resistivity.

Abstract:
In the contemporary business world, manufacturing concern companies are becoming moreefficient in production process. Outsourcing is a process in which companies or producers getthe service or produced product or portion of the finished product from other company.Logistics is a functional system which is important for the improvment of efficiency, both inthe flow of goods and information and to meet low-cost, reliable delivery, and fast objectiveswithin a company and throughout a network of companies. The outsourcing of logisticsactivities to Logistics Services Providers or Third Party Logistics (3PL) companies hasbecome a common practice in current business world. Logistics outsourcing is the use ofexternal companies to perform logistics functions that have traditionally been performedwithin an organisation and the functions performed by the third party can encompass theentire logistics process or selected activities within that process. This thesis or research hasbeen conducted on a manufacturing sector‟s company which is located and working inPakistan. This company is working with the name of Pakson International. Company has outsourced three logistics activities which are freight forwarding, transportation andwarehouse management. In this thesis, there is focus on the comparison of the logisticsoutsourcing process inside the Pakson International and in literature.

Abstract:
Rubber is a highly complicated material. Its properties are strongly dependent of temperature, preload, frequency, amplitude and filling materials. In order to have better knowledge about how rubber reacts for these different parameters, a number of different papers that treats these parameters have been reviewed. Main focus is on dynamic properties of carbon-black filled rubber. Mechanical models of rubber isolator with different kinds of possible solution have been suggested. A basic mathematical equation is derived to estimate the static and dynamic stiffness of a rubber isolator depending on the preload for a geometry that is commonly used by Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB. Tests of a rubber isolator with the same geometry is also conducted to validate the model. It is shown that the model corresponds very well to measurement data.

Abstract:
Innovation is essential for the growth and survival of an organisation. Although innovation is viewed as important, managers generally have a vague sense of their company’s innovativeness and which tools that are available to evaluate their capability to innovate. Previous research state that scorecard-based innovation audit tools do have merit in evaluating an organisations capability to innovate, but that there are a number of weaknesses. Problems are raised concerning three areas, the dimensions of which the scorecard is based on, the respondent that is conducting the innovation audit, and the Likert scale which a majority of innovation audit tools are using. Problems in these areas affect the reliability and validity of the tool. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current innovation audit practices by examining employee’s perception of the tool. Further the purpose is to, with the help of literature and qualitative research, propose areas of improvements and bring forth ideas that should be taken into consideration in future development of innovation audit tools. The study is performed as a qualitative study with an iterative approach. Interviews were conducted with nine parties of interest, and the empirical data has been analysed through a thematic analysis. The result show that an organisation’s capability to innovate is hard to measure and that there exists scepticism whether or not an innovation audit tool does manage to do this. Further, problems exist within the identified areas of an innovation audit tool. These problems affect the validity and reliability of the tool. A problem is how the respondent of the innovation audit tool interpret the statements or questions, and how they interpret the scale. Another problem is the self-interest that may exist, depending on who is participating in the audit. Ideas to minimise these problems are brought forward and discussed in order to increase the validity and reliability of the innovation audit tool.

Abstract:

Macrophages are an important key effector cell in the immune system which can practically be found in every tissue. Macrophages have for a long time been considered a population of cells only responsible for pro-inflammatory responses and anti-microbial activities. But over the past decade, many have come to realize the amazing plasticity of macrophages in response to different stimulations. The anti-microbial and pro-inflammatory macrophage is known as classically activated macrophages but newly discovered phenotypes have been revealed named wound-healing macrophages and regulatory macrophages. Through systematic screening we have identified an inducible macrophage activation state which has both wound-healing and regulatory capabilities activated by the novel cytokine combination IL-4/IL-10 with or without TGF-β.
