Khodr, Ali. "Planning a sectarian topography : revisiting Michel Ecochard's master plans for Beirut between 1941-1964." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/111541.

Abstract:
Thesis: S.M. in Architecture Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2017.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. "June 2017."
Includes bibliographical references (pages 118-122).
Scholarly discourse around the work of French architect and urban planner Michel Ecochard in the early days of the Lebanese nation state frames his master plans for the capital Beirut as modernist tools for an ailing urban agglomeration, without considering the possible ramifications these plans could have had on the social and sectarian structure of the city. Throughout the scope of this thesis, I will present a re-reading of Ecochard's work, detailing how he introduces an urbanity of social integration in a sectarian city rife with sporadic acts of urban violence. I will also argue that Ecochard's planned interventions are based on a careful reading of Beirut's socio-political and economic divisions following Lebanon's independence in the 1940's, and throughout the nation-building era in the 1960's. By studying and analyzing Ecochard's personal archives, notes and drawings; I will maintain that Ecochard's plans for the city reflect his vision for the peaceful integration of communities by promoting access, functionality and the articulation of communal public spaces, rather than viewing the plans solely as the agents of urban modernization. Reflecting upon the broader discourse of Ecochard's planning initiatives across Lebanon, at the time, I seek to position the architect/planner within the shifting political contexts of post-independence Lebanon. I will also address the nuances experienced by Ecochard as he attempts to intervene on Beirut within two spatial and temporal moments. The first concerned with planning a colonially inherited city. And the second, occurring at a time when Beirut becomes an economically driven safe haven, coinciding with the presence of a nationalist political agency attempting to restructure the capital with the intention of strengthening social and urban integration. The similarities and discrepancies surrounding the shifting architectural and urban dynamics between the 1941 and 1963 Plans will be key to this study.
by Ali Khodr.
S.M. in Architecture Studies

Mielcarek, Laura Elizabeth. "Factors associated with the development and implementation of master plans for botanical gardens." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278728.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of master plans at botanical gardens was studied for the purpose of identifying particular characteristics in successful master plan implementation. Twenty existing master plans were analyzed to provide background information about typical content, format, and professionals involved with development of master plans. In addition, fifty surveys were conducted with Directors of botanical gardens and arboreta. Twenty questions were posed to the Directors to define the extent of master plan implementation (i.e. use) at the garden and to identify the factors that affect implementation. Log-likelihood ratio tests (G tests) were performed to evaluate the data. Eighty-eight percent of the institutions surveyed reported that they implement a master plan at the garden. Significant relationships were observed between use of the master plan and the following factors: hiring a landscape architecture firm; involvement of staff, Boards of Directors, and the community; and inclusion of key sections, graphics, and the institution's mission statement. Based on these results, guidelines for master plan development and implementation are presented.

Full text
Abstract:
The Marchamalo salt flats, built in the 18th century, are located near Cabo de Palos, Murcia (Spain), in a hot spot area with constant pressures of tourism and urban speculation. The salt flats are currently abandoned, but its landscape and ecological value still subsist. This Thesis aims to develop a low impact lighting Master plan for Marchamalo salt flats in which a comprehensive analysis is relevant for the design project. A holistic analysis method is employed which considers three agents: “Space”, “Humans” and “Light” to which the factor “Flora & Fauna” was added since the original method was developed for an urban context while the salt flats are located in a natural protected area. Each agent is studied in depth, separately and the interrelations between them. Applying the interpretation of facts and data developed in the analysis and by means of alternative urban lighting solutions like phosphorescence, portable lamps and smart controls; a customised urban lighting design is proposed based on the salt flats identity, preservation of darkness, multi-sensorial experience of the realm and the reconnection with the sky and nature. The lighting proposal will also be the guiding thread to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the heritage in the Region of Murcia in general, taking as a particular example the case of Marchamalo salt flat.

Full text
Abstract:
Exploring spatio-temporal flux within architecture, this thesis presents design-based research on the temporal environments of Oceania and Western evental theory. Oceanic thought and Western theories of the event share commonalities, both holding that space and time are inseparable dimensions. This spatio-temporal concept challenges Western philosophical and architectural doxa that privilege stasis over temporal flux, and offers a mode by which to introduce alterity into architectural discourse. I move over these cultural and philosophical grounds in order to explicate and further develop a personal design practice that is of this place and time for, while there is a body of writing that documents Oceanic built environments, there is less research that considers how these may be constituted and communicated through contemporary architectural design. The thesis posits two temporalised environments apparent within Oceanic spatial thought and practice – the shifting and extensive oceanscape, and the telluric groundscape that makes space; and describes two resultant spatial typologies – an oceanspace which is characterised by openness and mobility, and a groundspace which is both surface and space. These contentions are tested and theorised through three architectural experiments developed between 1999 and 2005: the Sounds House, which operates as an open and mutable spatial field; the Ground House, which forms monumental “interiors” that emerge from and relate to the earth; and Tokatea, which blends these two spatialities, fabricating a temporalised environment in between the momentary and the monumental, between interior and exterior. In presenting and discussing these speculative spaces, this thesis moves between architecture and academia, Oceania and the West, the ephemeral and the enduring, and the inside and the outside, with the aim of destabilising architecture’s discursive ground, causing its hermetic boundaries to become temporalised and fluid.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1996.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 174-176).
The research question in this thesis supports a master plan effort at the Wilson Center for Research and Technology in Webster, New York. It concerns workplace design, space and technology issues, within the business context of research and development operations. A framework is proposed for developing R&D workplace laboratories based on the analysis of a pilot project completed in the Wilson Center. The analysis centers on understanding of the impacts of space, technology, organizational policies and practices, and how these affect the rate of product development. This thesis examines the Wilson Center's ongoing efforts to create a work environments that support innovation. The central hypothesis is that master planning processes, in addition to space and technology renovation, must also focus on learning methods intrinsic in a design process to achieve a unified approach and outcome. A unified research work environment is as dependent on it's culture as a reconstruction of its environment. Ultimately, a more appropriate design for supporting specific research processes is achieved when the users design the environment themselves.
by Suon Kuo Cheng.
M.S.

Filippi, Geoffrey George. "A High-Availability Architecture for the Dynamic Domain Name System." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32869.

Full text
Abstract:
A High-Availability Architecture for the Dynamic Domain Name System
DNS, DDNS, BGP, anycast, DHCP, replication, LDAP, multi-master, high-availability, reliability
The Domain Name System (DNS) provides a mapping between host names and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. Hosts that are configured using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) can have their assigned IP addresses updated in a Dynamic DNS (DDNS). DNS and DDNS are critical components of the Internet. Most applications use host names rather than IP addresses, allowing the underlying operating system (OS) to translate these host names to IP addresses on behalf of the application. When the DDNS service is unavailable, applications that use DNS cannot contact the hosts served by that DDNS server. Unfortunately, the current DDNS implementation cannot continue to operate under failure of a master DNS server. Although a slave DNS server can continue to translate names to addresses, new IP addresses or changes to existing IP addresses cannot be added. Therefore, those new hosts cannot be reached by the DDNS.
A new architecture is presented that eliminates this single point of failure. In this design, instead of storing resource records in a flat text file, all name servers connect to a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory to store and retrieve resource records. These directory servers replicate all resource records across each other using a multi-master replication mechanism. The DHCP servers can add records to any of the functioning DNS servers in event of an outage. In this scheme, all DNS servers use the anycast Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). This allows any of the DNS servers to answer queries sent to a single IP address. The DNS clients always use the same IP address to send queries. The routing system removes routes to non-functional name servers and delivers the request to the closest (according to network metrics) available DNS server.
This thesis also describes a concrete implementation of this system that was created to demonstrate the viability of this solution. A reference implementation was built in a laboratory to represent an Internet Service Provider (ISP) with three identical regions. This implementation was built using Quagga as the BGP routing software running on a set of core routers and on each of the DNS servers. The Berkeley Internet Name Daemon (BIND) was used as an implementation of the DNS. The BIND Simplified Database Backend (SDB) interface was used to allow the DNS server to store and retrieve resource records in an LDAP directory. The Fedora Directory Server was used as a multi-master LDAP directory. DHCP service was provided by the Internet Systems Consortium's (ISC) DHCP server. The objectives for the design were high-availability, scalability and consistency. These properties were analyzed using the metrics of downtime during failover, replication overhead, and latency of replication. The downtime during failover was less than one second. The precision of this metric was limited by the synchronization provided by the Network Time Protocol (NTP) implementation used in the laboratory. The network traffic overhead for a three-way replication was shown to be only 3.5 times non-replicated network traffic. The latency of replication was also shown to be less than one second. The results show the viability of this approach and indicate that this solution should be usable over a wide area network, serving a large number of clients.
Master of Science

Abstract:
This project is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture at Ball State University. It involves the creation of a Concept Master Plan for a 16-acre parcel of privately owned land located in the northern Hoosier National Forest (the "Project Site"). The Project Site includes about eight acres of wooded hills and approximately eight acres of gently sloping cleared area, which had been previously farmed, two creeks and a one-acre pond. The Concept Plan presented in this paper attempts to achieve the clients' program, i.e., enhancing the aesthetics of the Project Site and enriching the environmental complexity of its ecosystem through an integrated set of interventions that have as their focus maintaining a clearing in the woods. The design process includes a historical and contextual analysis of the Project Site and the region; identifying strong points, opportunities for enhancement and problems to be solved. Various alternatives to address issues are evaluated; and specific projects are then integrated into the Concept Plan. The two key dualities of the Project Site from which all else flows are: (i) hills/valley and (ii) clearing/forest. Enhancing and articulating these two pairs of complementary elements are the core opportunities at the Project Site. All other problems and opportunities are subordinate to these two unifying elements. Among the key near-term problems to be solved are: (1) stabilizing the pond; (2) minimizing the presence of alien invasives and opportunistic native species; (3) introducing appropriate native plant species which encourage a more varied fauna; (4) enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of wetlands; (5) developing naturalistic vistas based on existing topography; and (6) providing for an enriched diverse environment that requires a minimum of ongoing maintenance and intervention. The Concept Plan is composed of two elements:1.Description of specific "capital" projects which were selected during the evaluation process described above; and2.Management/maintenance plan, which is programmatic in nature and deals with ongoing activities such as monitoring, managing the growth of alien invasives and opportunistic natives, replacement and augmenting planting, etc.Measures proposed in the Concept Plan will arrest succession at the savanna stage to maintain a continuous, layered forest edge. New native plant species will be introduced, generating a more diverse landscape than would otherwise exist. Man-made elements such as a shelter and bridge will meet the clients' functional needs and serve as focal points and aesthetic elements.
Department of Landscape Architecture

Full text
Abstract:
The work deals with the problem of multi-master setup for clusters running PROOF, which is a master-worker based framework used at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), preferably for analysis of high energy physics data. The goal is to determine an optimal number of masters for the given task in order to make the task execution time as short as possible. Based on the analysis of PROOF processing work-flow, the merger-based algorithm is designed and implemented. It introduces a concept of the merger, which is a node acting as a worker during the computation phase, and as a master during the final phase of sub-results merging. The number and selection of merger nodes is performed dynamically, and depends both on the cluster size and it's recent performance. The performance of the merger-based algorithm is compared to the standard approach on several queries and several sizes of the cluster. The measured speed-up is confronted with the previously invented theory.

Abstract:
碩士
聖約翰科技大學
電子工程系碩士班
96
Class-D audio amplifier is usually used in portable electronic devices, such as hearing aids, MP3 players, notebook computers, smart phones, and personal digital assistants (PDA). The main advantages of Class-D audio amplifier are high efficiency, low supply voltage, and low total harmonic distortion, which cause the Class-D audio amplifier to extend the battery life of products in low supply voltage. In this thesis, we design a 1.3V/0.37W self-tuning pulse width modulator based on the master-slave architecture. Using the current-art pulse width modulation technology based on inverter comparator, the frame of full-bridge output stage, and the close-loop system made by the passive feedback control circuit, we improve the total harmonic distortion of the circuit. We have used the TSMC 0.35μm CMOS process technology to accomplish this pulse width modulation circuit, and designed the circuit with a simple RC integrator and bias control circuits. Using the switch of power transistors, we can reduce the power consumption during signal transformation. According to the simulation, the PWM circuit consumes power of 0.37W in 1.3V supply voltage. When inputs a 20 kHz audio signal, the power efficiency is 95% and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the circuit is 0.286%. Key words: Class-D audio amplifier, hearing aids, pulse width modulation (PWM), total harmonic distortion (THD)
