Abstract:
The range and capabilities of multiple new media require us to master paradoxical aspects of their uses and implications. Furthermore, those same media may also come to master us, through those paradoxes. Based on prior literature, we develop a four-component taxonomy of sites of media mastery (technology, technology-use, social contexts, and individual aspects). We apply and extend this framework to analyze summaries of focus group comments from students in a Norwegian and a U.S. university about their experiences attempting to master computers and mobile phones. From these results, we apply thematic analysis to identify five paradoxes associated with the use of these devices throughout the media mastery taxonomy as well as a tension between using media convergence or media comparison to master multiple new media.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to investigate the value and purpose of Master Classes, from the perspective of Conservatoire students. Thirty-seven UK Conservatoire students responded to a questionnaire, providing information about their prior experiences of Master Classes, the factors that they considered to be important in a successful Master Class and any possible barriers to learning in Master Classes. The students considered Master Classes to offer valuable performance opportunities, fresh ideas for approaching musical interpretation and technique and access to a professional community of practice. Performance anxiety was noted as a barrier to learning for those who performed in Master Classes and students raised several issues relating to the problematic notion of ‘participation’ as an audience member. Whilst the sample was clearly limited, these findings contribute to an understanding of how students might best be facilitated in capitalising on the opportunity to learn in Master Class contexts.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the socio-psychological qualities of Russian master students at a technical university. Since 2003 the Russian educational system is guided by the Bologna program, which implies a transition to a two-stage model. At the same time, master students remain a little-studied subject. Socio-psychological portraiture of undergraduates is an important task for monitoring the current state of the process of training highly qualified personnel. The research showed that the resulting generalized portrait shows that master students have abilities that can be directed both to managerial activities and to scientific ones. At the same time, clearly expressed introversion does not allow us to speak about the priority of management activities. Thus, at the moment, the problem of predicting the preferred leading type of activity after the master's degree is difficult.

The relationship between the music instructor and the pupil has only been superficially examined. As advanced students in music become even more talented and sophisticated, they need increasingly greater amounts of individual attention from accomplished musicians and instructors. As students hone and sharpen their skills, they need increasing amounts of attention, supervision and nurturing from their master teachers. This paper explores the quality of such a relationship and other specific concerns such as the need for counseling, mentoring and consultation.

Abstract:
Writing an appropriate research paper requires evidently the mastery of effective synthesis. This paper intends to highlight students’ hindrances in producing a sound synthesis, particularly weak critical reading and proposes equally outlets for a sturdy comprehension. The motivation is linked with the slenderness of studies addressing critical reading/effective synthesis binary. This will have pedagogical implications regarding the teaching of synthesis. The researchers used purposive sampling with master two didactic students (39 students). Self-assessment of the teaching strategy, corpus analysis, and an eight-item student questionnaire were used. The findings indicated that the major problems surrounding the internalisation of good synthesis were related to the different operations required for critical reading. The paper put into evidence the necessity of integrating the subject of academic writing into the syllabi of Master didactic students, the design of adequate critical reading tasks, and urged equally the necessity of more condensed practice, both in-class and off-class. Keywords: Critical reading, effective synthesis, paraphrasing, shortness of instruction, master 2 students.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore why students decide to enrol in a business postgraduate programme at Damascus University in the current Syrian crisis.Design/methodology/approachExploration of students’ motives was generated in this study using semi-structured interviews. On the basis of saturation sampling, 11 interviews took place in the leading Syrian university providing postgraduate programmes, Damascus University.FindingsThe results from the interviews indicate the existence of six different motives for students to enrol in a postgraduate study: self-motives, professional motives, social motives, academic motives, lack of vision, and delaying military service, which is directly caused by the current war conditions in Syria.Practical implicationsUnderstanding postgraduates’ motives is essential at the national level, the institutional level, and also at the individual level to make better future plans related to opening new programmes or altering admission criteria. Recommendations to higher education policy makers are highlighted in the study.Originality/valueThe majority of previous studies concentrate on students’ motives to pursue postgraduate studies during financial crisis. However, very little is known on why students decide to enrol in a business postgraduate programme in a war context.

Abstract:
Learning the rules of legal citation is a challenge for new and seasoned legal researchers alike. Good instruction and practice are required to master these rules. Think about the first sport you learned to play. Did you master all the rules the first time you played the game? Do most people even read a rule book when learning to play a new sport? Initially, it is a challenge for any player learning the game to follow all of the rules correctly. Generally, only coaches study the rule book. The rules of the game are very important so coaches and players know what is and is not permitted “on the field.”Most rules are disseminated orally and learned through practice. Law professors who teach legal research or supervise legal writing are the coaches in the game of legal citation; they must disseminate the rules to their students. The professors have a duty to stimulate a student's mastery of legal citation rules to meet the proficiency required of legal writing in the profession. Law students who do not master the rules of legal citation are more likely to plagiarize.

Abstract:
Abstract Hochschule Wismar, Germany, has been implementing Master programmes for international students since 1992. However, for most European universities, it is a rather new phenomenon. The purpose of the work is to analyse scientific literature on European higher education programmes for international students and to outline a theoretical framework of European higher education programmes for international students underpinning elaboration of new research question on master programmes for international engineering students. The research methodology comprises the study of the meaning of the key concepts of “framework”, “theoretical framework” and “international students”. Moreover, the logical chain of analysis is shown: theoretical framework → empirical study within a multicultural environment → conclusions. The case study research is applied. The empirical study was carried out at Hochschule Wismar, Germany in March 2017. Semi-structured interview served as the basis for data collection. The empirical findings allow complementing the elaborated theoretical framework consisting of the concepts on reasons for, language and impact of Masetr programme for international students with such a concept as European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Directions of further research are proposed. The novel contribution of the paper is the newly formulated research question on master programmes for international students.

One of the principles of the Bologna process is lifelong education, which means that a person should not be able just to gain knowledge for life, studying at the walls of his alma mater, but to master the competencies of self-education and research which enables him to be in a constant process of self-instruction. This is closely linked to the requirements to the Master in Education: who must be able to obtain information, to be able to analyze it, draw conclusions, put properly theory into practice, be able to see the contradictions, to pose problems, be able to seek the best ways and offer effective solutions (Всемирная хартия университетов (1988), Государственный общеобразовательный стандарт образования Республики Казахстан, 2009)). For the successful implementation of the lifelong learning principle and meeting Master of Education training requirements master student’s research culture should be developed. Having acquired the main basis of research culture, students will be able to use it to solve the problems of self-education, thereby self-perfecting throughout their lives. Abstract:
One way to find the perceptions about physical education (activity) among students is to apply some questionnaire. By applying physical activity index questionnaire to the students, we will be able to determine the level of physical activity practiced and their perception about physical education in their daily life. The study involved 166 undergraduate and master students (age 22.83±5.80) from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava, whose distribution was as follows: undergraduate male - 61, undergraduate female - 58; master male - 28, master female – 19. It should be mentioned that their academic activity includes between 1 and 6 hours of practical activities and some of the participants practice various sports, which means additionally between 6 and 10 hours of training per week. The questionnaire was applied to the subjects in January 2018. The results for ANOVA analysis between gender indicated significant differences between males and females in all three analyzed situations (undergraduate, master and overall), but the analysis made inside gender (undergraduate, master) did not show any statistical difference. The study is limited to the number of participants (166), but it can be a benchmark for other studies aiming at the physical education for youth and students and their impact on health-related fitness and an active lifestyle. In the future it is necessary to assess the subjects with some practical tests to see if there is any correlation between questionnaire scores (a subjective evaluation) and the results of the tests, where we are talking about objective evaluation; this is necessary to determine if the reliability of the questionnaire is adequate to the Romanian students and to be used as benchmark in the future.

A garden-based science curriculum (Junior Master Gardener) was introduced into public elementary schools as an informal education program conducted by Master Gardener volunteers and service-learning university students. The program was held once a week for 2 hours during regular school hours with fifth grade classes. The service-learning students were enrolled in a senior level horticultural science education class. Students were surveyed pre- and post-program with the Science Teacher Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI-B, preservice), a background survey instrument, and weekly journals. There were significant differences in the students' perceived teaching efficacy pre- and post-program. Most of the student's STEBI scores either remained the same or increased over the semester. Overall, the service-learning college students had very positive responses to their experiences as teachers and mentors in public elementary schools. In addition, the students were able to use their horticultural skills and knowledge and they also gained an appreciation for the teaching profession.

Abstract:
Introduction.Training a competitive specialist at the level of a master program is an important educational goal. The problem of the continuity of educational levels as a condition for the quality of graduate training is debatable, because the focus of such discussions is often around the methodological components of the educational program, rather than the conceptual guidelines for professional growth. The aim of the research was to study the level of studentsʼ readiness to follow master degree programs in the field of special (defectological) education. Materials and Methods. The research constitutes a theoretical analysis of the problem of readiness of defectology students to pursue the master degree level of education. In the course of empirical research, the results of a questionnaire and self-assessment were used. The survey included 68 master degree students of 4 master degree programs. Statistical processing of the results was carried out using the Statistica 10.0 software package for the Windows. Results. The authors found that the target guidelines for the reconstruction of the professional training of master students in the field of special (defectological) education is a set of expected knowledge, skills, and abilities from the standpoint of modern requirements and social need for the activities of a specialist in the changing conditions of education, upbringing and development of children with disabilities; the designing of a master program requires the actualization of theoretical and methodological training, taking into account its extrapolation to the level of implementation of applied professional competencies in accordance with the modern needs of society and the dynamics of the educational labor market. Discussion and Conclusion. The results obtained facilitate the development of professional training of master students in the field of special (defectological) education and allow us to consider theoretical and methodological readiness to pursue a master course in terms of continuity of educational tasks and the continuity of educational levels that make up the fundamental principles for the preparation of a competitive graduate.

Genre analysis dealing with the study of situated language in a particular context is regarded as a crucial component in every communication in general and academic writing texts in particular. Furthermore, recently it has been set as a requirement for the graduated students to pursue a shared rhetorical pattern for generating an academic text. Several researchers have recommended detailed explanations for rhetorical structures of various parts of academic texts, and an extensive literature is dedicated to investigate different academic genres such as research articles, theses, and dissertations in English. But, there are not enough studies that work on the thesis as a whole product and analyze all sections together and not separately. Therefore, 40 M.A. theses produced by Iranian TEFL students at Islamic Azad University (IAU), Isfahan (Khorasgan) Branch were collected and analyzed for the rhetorical structures of the Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion (IMRD) sections in order to accomplish the objectives of the study. Through calculating the frequencies and percentages of data, it was revealed that a number of moves in different sections was absent in the theses.

Abstract:
The article is focused on the problem dealing with the methodology- and speech-oriented training of the future Master students majoring in Pre-school Education. The essence of the notion “methodological work of the educator-methodologist at a preschool institution” has been revealed; it requires, on the one hand, an excellent command of the normative literary Ukrainian language, the knowledge of the speech etiquette formulas, the culture of professional speech communication; on the other hand, ‒ the ability to provide necessary methodological assistance to the educators in implementing the content line of the Basic Component of Preschool Education (the BCPE) “Child’s Speech”, in particular, in developing various types of children’s speech and communicative competencies. The methodology as an independent science is considered in the aggregate of interconnected means, forms, methods and techniques for achieving the set educational goal. At the same time, the notion “methodology” is ambiguous; in the pedagogical science, there is a variety of phenomena: “teaching techniques”, “education methods”, “teaching methods”. The study deals with the “Methodology aimed at developing children’s speech and teaching preschool children their mother tongue” as a discipline within the curriculum of the Bachelor courses. The course “Ukrainian Preschool Linguodidactics” is taught to the Master course students: the theory of the methodology aimed at speech development, the development of speech, artistic speech and communicative-speech activities. The phenomenon “methodology- and speech-oriented training of the future masters majoring in Preschool Education” is defined as a motivational positive predisposition to master the norms of the Ukrainian language in perfection demonstrated by the future masters; the acquisition of the content and teaching methods of the discipline “Methodology aimed at developing children’s speech and teaching preschool children their mother tongue at pre-school institutions” by the undergraduate students (Bachelor courses students); the positive emotional and value-centred attitude to the implementation of the evaluative controlling educational and speech activities of children and educators in the process of methodological work at pre-school institutions, which allows providing educators with, on the one hand, methodological assistance and support, on the other hand, ‒ guarantees the efficiency of children’s speech development. The motivational orientation-targeted, cognitive-innovative, methodologically accompanying, reflexive and appraisal components comprise this training. The methodology- and speech-oriented training of the future masters majoring in Pre-school Education performs these functions: prognostic, stimulating, correctional, value-oriented, emotional. Keywords: masters, pre-school education, methods, orientation, educator-methodologist, Ukrainian Preschool Linguodidactics, speech development, education.

Abstract:
Materials engineering involves knowledge of the fundamental physics, chemistry and engineering of materials in order to elaborate, develop, and use materials with superior and new properties. The research, development and applications of materials are the major reasons behind the availability, cost reduction, innovations and improvements in all the fields of industry. Master's programs are designed to give you a solid (strong) education in the materials engineering field. Students entering a Master program have already earned a bachelor's degree and have solid acquirement of engineering. The program entails coursework, examinations and an internship or other applied experience. A master report is required to obtain the masters degree based on the researches during the stage. During a Master programme the students learn to approach complex issues from the perspective of different disciplines such as: characterisation of materials, thermodynamics, structurals transformations, technology of materials, properties of surfaces or initiation on research methods. By understanding the properties of materials, materials engineers create new materials with desired properties. Students entering a Ph.D. program have already earned a a masters degree in the field of „Materials engineering". Because of the nature of specialization the Ph.D. program tends to be smaller than master program. The international orientation of the practice stage approaches to of the Erasmus mobilites. A Ph.D. typically demonstrates a person's competence in research. Ph.D. students begin by taking courses and exams, go on to taking advanced seminars and preparing dissertation research. To complete their knowledges, they are continuing by researching, writing and completeing a dissertation thesis. The doctoral-level thesis, is the culmination of a Ph.D. candidate's research into a topic and is the major requirement of earning the doctorate. A doctoral degree is obviously a more advanced degree. However, it is long. Depending on the program, a PhD could take 4-8 years to complete. A PhD programs entails 3 years of coursework and a dissertation. During this these years the independent researchs projects are designed to cover new knowledge in your field and to be of publishable quality. Doctoral study offers the unique opportunity for an individual to develope intensive and prolonged research on a particular topic, which often leads to publication. The present paper presents the association of Romanian and French university teachers to educate students to prepare a Master diploma and to continue with cotutelle doctoral studies in the field of materials engineering.

Knowledge of research methodology is important for those who are required to read research articles. With the knowledge of research methodology, students will be able to evaluate whether the methods employed by the author is appropriate for the study. However, the differences in research experience between master and doctoral students influence their expectation of research methodology course. This paper examined the level of research methodology knowledge of master and doctoral research students in education after attending a series of research methodology courses. Based on 39 respondents, this paper revealed that both groups are at Moderate Low level. Further analysis revealed that 44.4% of master students are at Low level compared to only 23.8% of doctoral students who are found at the Low level. It was also revealed that both groups have difficulties in quantitative research concepts specifically on research design, sampling, and data collection topics. The most common suggestions received from master students are to segregate the course between master and doctoral students and to have more specific content on the course. Future study should have more representatives of postgraduate students and larger samples for inferential statistics to compare mean between the groups and to examine the association between research experiences and research methodology knowledge.

Abstract:
Indonesian government has been promoting the National Literacy Movement since 2016 to response disappointing results of the Program for International Student Assessment on literacy and mathematical literacy skills of students. This movement involves many parties, including educational universities, to prepare mathematics education students of master level, as prospective teachers or lecturers, to understand mathematical literacy. To investigate this condition, this study aims to analyze master student understanding on mathematical literacy problems. To do so, we conducted an online survey via Google Form involving 32 master students from several universities in Bandung. In this survey, each master student was called for sending two mathematics problems and solutions that considered to be literacy problems. The results revealed that 17 (53%) involved master students understand mathematical literacy problems. The most frequent category of literacy problems to appear was Change and Relationship followed by categories of Space and Shape, Uncertainty and Data, and Quantity, respectively. Another result showed that word problems seemed to be regarded as the same as mathematical literacy problems by some students. We conclude that master student understanding of mathematical literacy needs to be improved for facing future educational careers.
