Abstract:
With the advent of the neural paradigm, machine translation has made another leap in quality. As a result, its use by trainee translators has increased considerably, which cannot be disregarded in translation pedagogy. However, since legal texts have features that pose major challenges to machine translation, the question arises as to what extent machine translation is now capable of translating legal texts or at least certain types of legal text into another legal language well enough so that the post-editing effort is limited, and, consequently, whether a targeted use in translation pedagogy can be considered. In order to answer this question, DeepL Translator, a machine translation system, and MateCat, a CAT system that integrates machine translation, were tested. The test, undertaken at different times and without specific translation memories, provided for the translation of several legal texts of different types utilising both systems, and was followed by systematisation of errors and evaluation of translation results. The evaluation was carried out according to the following criteria: 1) comprehensibility and meaningfulness of the target text; and 2) correspondence between source and target text in consideration of the specific translation situation. Overall, the results are considered insufficient to give post-editing of machine-translated legal texts a bigger place in translation pedagogy. As the evaluation of the correspondence between source and target text was fundamentally worse than with regard to the meaningfulness of the target text, translation pedagogy should respond by raising awareness about differences between machine translation output and human translation in this field, and by improving translation approach and strengthening legal expertise.

Abstract:
A new electrocontact materal based on silver has been obtained. The material has been dispersion-strengthened by nanopowders of zinc oxide, stannum oxide and titanium oxide. The microstructure and elemental composition of the phases have been formed at solid-phase sintering and electroerosion tests have been studied by the methods of scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electroerosion wear and transitional resistivity have been determined as a result of laboratory testing. The developed electrocontact materal has demonstrated physical, mechanical and exploitational properties similar to the properties of an electrocontact materal based on toxic cadmium oxide

Abstract:
This article argues that there are matenal and literary reasons to view Jub. 1.15b-25 as a redactional addition to the text of Jubilees 1. The matenal arguments build upon a new matenal reconstruction of the 4Q216, which suggests that there was not space in the manuscript for this section of text. With this in mind, literary arguments for viewing this section as an addition are explored, and the late Second Temple period context of the addition of this text is made clear through connections with literature only known through the Dead Sea Scrolls. There are important implications of this analysis for the understanding of the composition and literary growth of Jubilees—which must have been subjugated to some degree of redaction.

Abstract:

Taddei, Leonardo.

Full text
Abstract:
The main focus of this thesis is the potential use of Matecat as a source of data on the way translators carry out their work. The software allows its users to download a file called ‟editing log”, which contains data about the translation project carried out; some of these data, namely the ‟post-editing effort” and ‟time-to-edit” statistics, concern the work of the translators, and can be used as tools to evaluate the way they work. The project within which the software has been used is the localization of AlmaRM, the web-based platform used by the University of Bologna to manage incoming and outgoing mobility. The localization of the platform can be viewed as part of the general effort of the Univeristy towards greater internationalization. As part of the localization process, files whose content belongs to different textual typologies were translated, making it possible to test the effectiveness of Matecat's default MT engine (based on the Google and Microsoft APIs) on different kinds of texts. The thesis is composed of five chapters: the first is introductory and is concerned with the context in which the localization project was carried out and its purpose; the second chapter is an overview of the main aspects of the translation world related to the project and the literature about them; the third chapter guides the reader through the different parts of the project carried out; the fourth chapter details the analysis of the editing logs associated with the project; the fifth chapter recaps the whole dissertation and presents the final thoughts on the results of the analysis.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation concentrates on the translation of institutional academic texts. The translation is part of a larger project aimed at localising AlmaRM, an online platform used to monitor international mobility and managed by DIRI, the International Relations Division of the University of Bologna. The present work is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 gives an overview of localisation and provides information on its history, definitions, and role in GILT model. Web localisation is also analysed in depth, considering both aspects of cultural adaptation and web usability. Chapter 2 offers an insight into the target language of the translation: English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). English language varieties are listed and a few definitions of ELF are provided. Some attempts made by scholars to determine its status as a language variety are reported. Subsequently, aspects such as internal variability and importance of function and context in ELF communication are described, while taking into account the role of the English native speaker and of ELF in Europe. Chapter 3 identifies the causes and consequences of the internationalisation process experienced by the academic world, with a focus on its outcomes, such as the creation of academic websites and of institutional-academic genres. It also introduces the AlmaRM platform and the features of its localisation project, whose tasks were assigned to four students. The resources provided for translation, namely monolingual corpus, translation memory, and terminological database are also presented. Moreover, an overview of the CAT tool is provided: MateCat is analysed and evaluated from the translator’s point of view. Chapter 4 contains an analysis of both the source text and its translation. After assessing the translation skopos and analysing the source text, some strategies for translating into ELF are mentioned. Several issues and problems faced during the translation process are then examined through different examples.

Denninger, Marc. "Conception d'un matelas passif sur mesure." Thèse, Université de Sherbrooke, 2008. http://savoirs.usherbrooke.ca/handle/11143/1836.

Full text
Abstract:

The current paper highlights the different realities that influence the construction of the tics of mathema that emerge during the math classes at a public school of São Paulo, located in Sao Jose do Rio Preto. Being characterized as a qualitative research and due the ethnographic connotation, the methodology adopted can be seen as a reference, as a parameter validation, as method that works illuminating the way, and even as a generative test and as a strategy for and from thinking about the subject and data search. From the comparison between theory and practice, this research verifies the elements that support the construction of knowledge by students. It also shows the difficulties arising from different levels of reality and different levels of perception within the classroom, due the complexities that exist in this process. It indicates that individuals bring elements of their cultural heritage to the process of acquiring knowledge, which fundamentally influences how they perceive the reality. The study reveals that the teacher brings a knowledge that is seen as very different and inherent from mathematics – the disciplinary knowledge – and most of the students interviewed see no relation between mathematics (the scholar one) and their day-to-day activities. The research exhibits also that students use the notion of transdisciplinary to construct their knowledge. In this sense, the dialogue, the socio-cultural knowledge of students and their expectations about math must be considered. Finally, we must bring the ludic element to this process as a positive factor for the construction of knowledge

This paper proposes a product-based approach of a post-editing (PE) experiment that was carried out with a total of 10 MA translation students. The goal of this study comprised both the analysis of the post-editing results performed by student translators involving a machine-translated text in MateCat and the subsequent error markup. By comparing the quality reports obtained at the end of the post-editing process, we analysed the linguistic quality results and observed a heterogeneous error distribution, considerable divergence in severity level ratings and a huge span of TTE (time to edit). This study aims at making a contribution to the integration of post-editing activities into the translation technology classroom for students without prior experience in PE.

Abstract:
A scientific reading of the transformations of Matera starting from the urban re-activation in a social and spatial perspective in its neighbourhoods. The redevelopment of urban voids starts by the metaphor of the ecological network in an urban scale to update the connection system of open spaces in the light of new practices and flows for an innovative idea of urban resilience. The key role is re-see the neighbourhood: (i) on a local scale, focusing on the practices and customs, in the centre like in the industrial areas, starting processes of recovery and reuse but also of innovation (that result from the opportunity to be the European Capital of Culture 2019); (ii) on a urban scale with the transition space and threshold, identifying those natural and mineral signs representing a transition of porosity. The value of the "suburbs" enters as re-starting for rebirth of the city projects counting on the creativity of practices into the open spaces. The reformist project of Matera as original "laboratory" of architectural and urban experiments changes. Neighbourhoods were born from the same idea of “vicinato” (neighbour) but adapted to a new social identity, able to work on embryos of community, in the same way in Valencia in which natural elements (Turia) lead to rediscover the sense of belonging and making community. In both cases, urban policies are oriented towards innovative and spontaneous processes able to change the urban approach to a multi-purpose city although representative of culture and identity.
