Eimke, Andrea. "Liminal Space - an investigation of material and immaterial boundaries and their space in between." AUT University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/916.

Abstract:
This visual arts project investigates notions of liminality and hybridity regarding the ambiguity of the interstitial position of the migrant. An examination of the migrant’s perspective and perception of cultural identity and the sense of home and belonging also underpins these studies. The project examines how the space between two cultures is experienced, and explores ways in which this might be visually expressed through the construction of fibre and textile art works. The researcher’s personal experience, as a German national now resident in the Cook Islands, provides the basis for reflections on cultural liminality and the ambivalence of feelings towards inclusion and exclusion. Material elements from European and Polynesian cultures such as cloth, fibres, and thread, and non-material elements like concepts and rituals are investigated for their potential to transcend the boundaries of their original culture to reveal the liminal space as source of energy and change. The 80% practice based work is accompanied by a 20% written exegesis

Koca, Asli. "Authentication Of Space: The Photograph As A Raw Material For Architectural Production." Master's thesis, METU, 2009. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/3/12611454/index.pdf.

Abstract:
This thesis is a critical reconsideration of the relationship of architectural production with its unique mode of representation: &ldquo<br>photography.&rdquo<br>Photography has been interpreted essentially as a technique and a visual medium to document architecture in general. The &ldquo<br>photograph,&rdquo<br>in this sense, is regarded as a representational form of documentation and an artistic and material expression of architecture. Besides this conventional value, this study argues that photography not only provides a new medium for the reinterpretation of architectural space, but also a new material and technique for architectural production. In this respect, this study discusses photography as an emerging tool for architecture in which the photograph is conceived as a raw material. As in the manufacturing of a raw material in an industrial process, the main argument of this study is that as long as a photograph is processed with required components, it contributes to architectural production in a comparable manner. Even it has the potential to produce architectural space in its own right. To understand the nature of this architectural space supported by a variety of physical and non-physical characteristics of photography, this study compares two different ways of architectural production with the aid of photographs. Starting with the assumption that there is a radical change in the conception of photography in architecture from an immaterial quality to material essence, this study argues that the photograph is a raw material that can be used to authenticate architectural space from the initial idea to the built object. Therefore, drawing attention to the changed value of photography for architecture over time, the aim of this study is to establish a critical framework to understand and discuss this contemporary function of photography in architecture.

CARVALHAES, PEGO KATIA ANDREA. "APPROACH OF THE SYSTEMIC DESIGN IN MATERIAL AND INTANGIBLE CULTURE OF ESTRADA REAL: TERRITORIAL SERRO CASE." Doctoral thesis, Politecnico di Torino, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11583/2644209.

Abstract:
This study aimed to apply the Systemic Design methodology in the context of the Estrada Real (Royal Road), specifically in Serro Territory, in order to generate a new economic and development model in this location, by creating relationships between their production systems. The first step of the methodology involved the understanding the territory in all its amplitude, i.e., the history of the place, its physical and climatic aspects, its natural resources, its activities (social, cultural and productive), the way and the pace of life community, as well as its infrastructure. The second phase encompassed the systematization and analysis of existing artisanal production systems in Serro Territory. For such a field survey was conducted in which the artisans were interviewed and the production sites were visited. On this occasion, we investigated all output and input of their activities. In the third step of the methodology were designed the matter and energy flows of the nine production systems in question, from the analysis of the "negative points" that emerged in the previous step, as well as the characteristics and potential of the material and immaterial local resources. This process allowed the emergence of several new activities and new products. In the fourth and last step, the current system (existing) and the systemic system (proposed) were compared. Such confrontation demonstrated that, with the approach of Systemic Design the same territory would come to get, on average, an increase of 530% of products and 820% of activity, resulting therefore in a huge business volume. As envisioned results are highlighted: i) in the economic field: expansion of activities; increase in jobs; increase income generation in the community; ii) in the environmental sphere: sustainable management of natural resources; iii) in the cultural field: appreciation of culture; enhancement of local know-how; iv) in the social sector: improving quality of life; keeps its inhabitants in their territory.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the aesthetic encounter from the perspective of the writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty on the visible and the invisible. It begins with the premise that from time to time we encounter situations which precipitate a sense of slippage in our experience of the world. The paper proceeds to argue that the arts can provide a point of access to this experience, and that aesthetic theory has, for example, responded to it through the development of the notion of 'the sublime'. The writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and, in particular, aspects of his text The Visible and the invisible, are presented with a view to augmenting this aspect of aesthetic theory. Proceeding from a 'Merleau-Pontian' perspective, the paper explores how the arts can serve to disrupt our conventional sense of space and time - creating ripples in the substance Merleau-Ponty names as 'flesh' - so as to expose the chiasm or blind spot in our experience of the world. The methodology adopted is an experiential one, which draws on the writer's interaction with the selected works of various artists as well as her own practice in glass.

Abstract:
The Black Social Clubs had an important place in Brazilian society formation. They broke the standards of a time, acting in the fight against slavery and the racial discrimination. The more ancient place is located in Rio Grande do Sul (South of Brazil), and it represents the greater representation. The objective of this study is to know what principal measures should be done by the club managers and State about the preservation of these places that, in the end of the XX century and the beginning of the new millennium, have been searching survive to the disarticulating problems, neglecting and asking for help. The methodology of this work is a documentary and bibliographic research as well as techniques of the oral history and participant observation, with econographic character, doing an analysis of the final routings of the 1st National Meeting of Black Clubs and Societies, occurred in 2006, in Santa Maria/RS. This meeting was a historical mark, constructing a new paradigm with demands registered in the Santa Maria Letter , which pointed the principal guidelines for the club directors and the Public Power in coming years. The investigation has the principal objective of suggesting public policies in order to preserve, keep, strengthen, spread and safeguard these places of resistance and black identity, focusing the study on Treze de Maio, a Black Social Club created by workers of the extinct railroad in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, mainly in its birth, from 1903 to 1914 and its revitalization as a community museum in the XXI century. This museum appears as a strategy, a reinvention of the heritage, with an eye in the past, searching the origins, but with actions in the present to recognize and register this centennial club and other pairs as immaterial heritage of Brazilian society. In this sense, it is consider as the principal result of this work, the opening process of the Social Black Clubs Register in Brazil, by the National Historic and Heritage Institute, (NHHI) in November 5th,2009, which will guarantee, after the inventory, the elaboration of a Safeguard Plan, which contemplates the National Politic of Immaterial Heritage.<br>Os Clubes Sociais Negros tiveram papel decisivo na formação da sociedade brasileira.

The theoretical discussion based on Cultural Studies and in authors who discourse about the Post Modernity and its consumption relations is the bottom-line of this research and only by it we could elaborate the assumptions which have originated the two hypotheses, extremely connected, which sustain this thesis. The empirical research applies as a method the quantitative content analysis of the corpus, composed by advertising videos, carefully defined. Following the analytical and theoretical path, it was possible to conclude that we are in a post material era, ruled by the intangible, which modifies the market communication.<br>A tese é constituída por duas etapas complementares, a teórica e a empírica, essenciais para que os seguintes objetivos propostos sejam devidamente cumpridos.

Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 8, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA080130.

Abstract:
This paper aims to discuss the difficulties involved in the preservation of the an intangible cultural heritage: the Dance. We shall begin from an aesthetic and philosophical premise as we investigate the problems that arise with an art form whose virtual essence lives in the ephemeral. However, this quality and the different perception of time and space that the dance create, that allows this art form to adapt to the fluidity of the 21st century - an era encumbered by dynamic dichotomies. In order to fully understand the importance of preserving this cultural heritage, an entire chapter has been devoted to “intangible cultural heritage legislation” which includes particular reference to dance works and copyright laws. An understanding of this aspect is essential - especially when confronting problems related to exploring and researching within dance archives - a prominent theme in this work. The thesis then moves onward to define the element of dance itself, with particular attention placed on the dancer’s instrument (the body) and the new technology. Only after thoroughly exploring this fundamental aspect, we will then discuss the sensitive issue of dance archive preservation. The preliminary exploration and definition in the thesis then brings us to the main question: How can we preserve and protect dance masterpieces in the digital era, especially with respect to current changes in National museums and archive conservation.Specific examples with regards to dance conservation and its evolution have been hued from selected European Institutions and in particular, those in Italy. One of the overriding concepts throughout this thesis has been to focus on the topic from the dancers point of view and therefore, collaborating with important dance figures such as the French master, Dupuy, has offered invaluable insight. It is the hope of this thesis to lay the ground work of a theoretical basis for an ideal center to study and preserve the evolution of dance in Italy<br>Il presente lavoro ha come obiettivo quello di affrontare un discorso conservativo di un bene culturale immateriale, qual è la danza.
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The world of construction is nowadays confronted with the requirements and challenges of the socio-ecological transition. The discipline of architecture is evolving in order to move towards a more eco-responsible architecture from a technical, cultural, economic and legal point of view.Reuse, less developed than recycling, is a practice that is emancipating itself at high speed and struggling to fit into the standardized production system attributed by the current industrial and socio-technical system. The PHD is part of the theoretical framework of the socio-ecological transition, which proposes a broader vision of the paradigm changes to be made by integrating, beyond the technical side (energy), all social actions and so-called ecological behaviours. In this sense, we situate our research within the theoretical framework proposed by Sylvain Lavelle , who opts for "a fairer transition" . He defends a polymorphic transition based on a change of oïkos, tekhnè, ethos and muthos, thus going beyond the energy question alone and integrating principles of social justice, relationship to the environment, ethics and new socio-cultural narratives. We read, trought this thought, an action program that can be transposed to the practice of reuse and more generally to the architectural discipline. This thesis work questions the potential of this practice to induce other approaches and project tools to move towards a truly eco-responsible architecture. We propose the definition of oïko-responsible to support the need for a change of perspective on this term, and to give a reading of the programme of actions it implies. Although philosophical, these definitions have served as a framework for reading and analysing experimental practices and tools for a dual corpus of operational (eight actors) and pedagogical (one module) practices; they have also enabled us to explore the basis for commitment and meaning of this practice. The challenges of this research work consist in taking stock of this emerging practice and looking at how it guides the triple practice of architecture (pedagogy, research, operational). It will then be necessary to verify the hypothesis that reuse can induce an oïkos-responsible architecture by mobilizing the triple activity of operational practice, pedagogy and research. To this end, we propose a first step demonstrating how practitioners work towards its professionalization by reintegrating experimental dynamics into the project process. Secondly, they demonstrate their ability to redefine or create tools for reuse that can respond to this eco-responsible change. These two phases draw a portrait of actors who ultimately request this practice of reuse as a tool to reinterview the ethics of architectural practices

Abstract:
Through two books and a series of video documentations of live performances Mette Ingvartsen makes choreography into a territory of physical, artistic and social experimentation. The Artificial Nature Series focusses on how relations between human and non-human agency can be explored and reconfigured through choreography. By investigating and creating a ‘nonhuman theater’ questions regarding material agency, ecology, natural disasters, the Anthropocene and non-subjective performativity are posed. The resulting reflections are closely related to the poetic principles utilized to create the performances, while also drawing connections to territories outside theater. By contrast, 69 positions inscribes itself into a history of human performance with afocus on nudity, sexuality and how the body historically has been a site for political struggles. By creating a guided tour through sexual performances – from the naked protest actions of the 1960’s, through an archive ofpersonal performances into a reflection on contemporary sexual practice – this solo work rethinks audience participation and proposes a notion of soft and social choreography. The contrasting performative strategiesarticulate a twofold notion of expanded choreography: on the one hand movement is extended beyond the human body by including the agency of nonhuman performers, and on the other hand, movement is expanded into animaginary and virtual space thanks to ‘language choreography’.<br><p>LINKS</p><p>https://vimeo.com/164552586</p><p>https://vimeo.com/164558381</p>

Abstract:
The phrase “povertà educativa”, introduced in Italy by Save the Children Italia in 2014 and later translated internationally as “educational poverty” by the same organization, has been successful in Italy both politically and socially, contributing to drawing attention to child poverty and, in particular, to financing prevention projects and enforcement actions against non-material child poverty. Over the years it has been used to denote a complex set of phenomena, however a critical pedagogical examination was missing in order to bring out some of its implicit meanings. Even if it originated from the fields of economics and social sciences, the idea of an “educational” poverty unequivocally challenges the pedagogical reflection, clearly referring to dimensions that are uniquely relevant to the world of education, both in its formal and informal implications. The present research reconstructed its origins and tried to outline meaningful directions for defining both the spectrum of different "educational poverties" and possible ways of preventing and contrasting them. The selected sources were drawn from an international literature updated in December 2021. Furthermore, adolescent voices were collected during a qualitative research exercise inspired by the Student Voice movement and conducted with a phenomenological derivation approach.

Abstract:
In 1887, Emile Berliner patented the gramophone and its flat lateral-cut records, a format that was the basis of the birth of the music recording industry. The aim of this study is to contribute to the history of sound recording and to the preservation of shellac discs through a better knowledge of the material and immaterial aspects of industrial record manufacture during the acoustic period, ca. 1898-1925, through a multidisciplinary approach, combining research methods from ethnomusicology, history of technology and conservation sciences. The first part of this study is dedicated to the history of the recording companies and record labels active in Europe during the acoustic era, considering the different perspectives of their activity in these early decades: from artist and repertoire selection to the technical challenges of the early recording sessions, and to the marketing and distribution strategies that led to the implementation of this emerging industry across the globe, with Portugal serving as a case study of how the business relations could lead to the introduction of local labels in a country with no manufacturing facilities, and how major companies, like the Gramophone Co., operated in these smaller markets. The study then goes into the more technical aspects of record manufacture, with a focus on the procedures inside the factory. Shellac disc compound recipes were compiled, retrieving information from patents and historical documentation, to assess the most common ingredients used over time by each company as fillers, binders, and additives. This then led to the second part of this study, where a set of shellac discs from Portuguese collections was analysed with a non-destructive method, µ-EDXRF, with the aim of identifying the materials used as fillers and ascertain whether it would be possible to attribute a specific pattern or a tendency to the production of each European factory over time. This study may enable the material characterization of the production of each factory over time, allowing in the future a better knowledge of the manufacturing location of local labels whose history is little known up to now, being also important for further studies on the preservation of these sound carriers – which are important information providers themselves, and need to be preserved together with the audio signal they carry.<br>Em 1887, Emile Berliner patenteou o gramofone e os seus discos planos de gravação lateral, um formato que esteve na génese da indústria fonográfica.

1 Abstract: The subject of this paper is the issue of the pecuniary satisfaction as a legal instrument of protection of the personality in civil law. It is obvious that the main object of this work is the question of personal rights and its protection, which has its part in constitutional laws. This paper also analyses the definition of law on protection of personality, an entitlements to sue and to be sued relating to protection of personality. This essay is divided into five chapters with relatively separated thesis. In the first part the issue of conception of personality is analysed. What is personality in the terms of law? There are two different views - in first personality is identical with human existence, in second view personality is only role assignated to human by system of law. This part of the work analyses especially socialistic view of person and its protection and iusnaturalistic conception of personality. Both of them have practical impacts on legislation in Czechoslovakia and in Czech Republic as well. Anthropological conception respects new proposal of Civil code, while socialistic view and its basics exerts influence up recent Civil Code nr. 40/1964. Second part of this work analyses generally personality rights and sources of laws of personality and monistic and dualistic theory. In...

giallorenzo, flavia. "Airbnb in Urban Regions. What In-Becoming Issues and Opportunities for Public Policies from Airbnb as a Complex System?" Doctoral thesis, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/1277399.

Full text
Abstract:
The research investigates complex dynamics in territories focusing on material and immaterial aspects of Airbnb, as an in-becoming issue for urban and regional governance. The short-term rental (STR) market is a disruptive social and urban challenge for local institutions because of its wide diffusion. Thus, it is broadly approached by different fields of study because of its effects on urban livability, and it is vastly discussed in over-tourist cities. The research hypothesizes that the materiality and immateriality of dynamics of the Airbnb’s patterns of supply and demand diffusion, the tangled interplay among local and global, private, and public actors involved and the multi-level governance of the short-term rental market are evidence of a complex system that is worth investigating in urban regions. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic set unique conditions to highlight the Airbnb system’s complexity in transition phases. Therefore, the research proposes to frame the STR market in complexity theories linked to urban domains, in which assumptions on planning and governance rely on complex features of systems and are aimed at discussing the effectiveness of public policy models and tools, here debated in a regional dimension. Methodologically, the single case study proceeds through a data-driven approach, while the research project is built on a theory-driven approach. Ultimately, the research aims to identify the dimension and the specific attributes of a gap between the governance system and the complex features of the Airbnb system, questioning how these features may influence the current urban governance models and tools for short-term rental in Italy and specifically in Tuscany. Limited to the Airbnb material and immaterial dynamics, the research investigates the weaknesses and strengths of the current governance and planning paradigm at different levels in Italy, considering the complexity of the Airbnb system. In in-becoming contexts, the thesis claims that effective rules arise from a systemic approach to the governance of the STR market, because its main actors, such as Airbnb, involve a multiplicity of scales, powers, markets, and life systems, mainly in cities, but also in urban regions because of the morpho-genetic and flow system that constitute regions and attract tourist flows. The conclusions sketch the efficiency of approaching the STR market in Italy from a regional perspective, introducing the assemblages of actors, the ‘roughness’ of territories and the role of the history as (a part of the) drivers of unpredictable patterns of evolution/revolution. Contextually, the impossibility to foresee private plans at the local level doesn’t imply the impossibility for other normative levels to set framing rules for STR platforms and correlated dynamics to protect the weakest actors in the game. In conclusion, the analyses driven by complexity and planning studies open to the chance to further discuss the effects and not only the patterns of the Airbnb system in regions, aimed at supporting urban and regional policy, revising their models and tools under the lens of complexity theories linked to urban domains.

Abstract:
XIX e princípios do séc. O centenário da morte de D. António Barroso, que ocorre em 2018, e a esperada conclusão do processo canónico em curso, com vista à sua beatificação/canonização, poderão trazer novos elementos de valorização turística para a região.<br>Tourism is undoubtedly a vector of growth and local development and may become a lever for the development of underprivileged areas, by increasing the existing resources, either natural or of cultural nature. From the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century, the story of Remelhe in the municipality of Barcelos, is inextricably linked to the figure of D. António Barroso. His birth, his exile and chapel-vault in this parish, made his name best-known, establishing it as the land of the Great Missionary and Bishop of OPorto. Thus, the aim of this study was to ascertain whether the tangible and intangible heritage associated with D. António Barroso could be a good resource, which can be converted into a cultural tourism product, namely a product devoted to religious tourism, promoting sustainable development. Bibliographical research, participant observation, interviews, questionnaires and a SWOT analysis have led to the conclusion that Remelhe has resources to promote tourism based on the figure of Don Antonio Barroso, providing that there is commitment and investment of religious organizations, local / regional political authorities and private investors. We have also noticed that this may be articulated, networked, with other existing religious resources in Remelhe and other parishes of Barcelos county. The centenary of the death of D. António Barroso, occurring in 2018, and the expected completion of the ongoing canonical process with a view to his beatification / canonization, may eventually bring new elements of tourism development of the area.

Abstract:
Abstract. This thesis examines the emergence of the regional economic cooperation as a non-hegemonic form of cooperation. We propose an alternative to the prevailing conception of hegemonic origin of systemic cooperation, proposed by the neorealist and neoliberal theories. Rather than relying on theories of the market, we focus instead on some critical processes of the anarchical structure itself, such as creation of forms of war by anarchy. More specifically, we focus on the forms of war that put the anarchical structure under maximal strain, bringing it to an overwhelming systemic crisis, the fall of a hegemonic power, the end of a hegemonic system, and the onset of a non-hegemonic systemic cooperation of more regional and economic nature. Prioritizing the historical approach we stress especially the role of long-distance trade and international credit in the construction, by the anarchical structure itself, of forms of war impossible for the hegemonic power to withstand.
